Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Hairston Jr. throws away 9th inning lead, Padres lose to Astros 3-4

Adrian can't reach Hairston Jr's throw because it's 15 feet in the air.

The Mother's Day classic started with sad news as Kevin Correia found out that his brother had died in a rumored cliff accident.  That news combined with the fact that Major League Baseball likes to remind mothers that cancer is trying to kill them on Mother's Day made for a somber beginning to the game.

Correia's start was scratched and Tim Stuaffer took his place on short notice pitching 6 innings and hitting an RBI double.  Bud Black said that he will consider putting Correia on the Bereavement List.

In the 9th the Padres had a 3-2 lead and Jerry Hairston Jr. fielded a play at short stop, set himself and then threw the ball into the stands.  The runner would come around to score and the Padres would play extra innings. The Padres had opportunities but a bunt by Adrian Gonzalez and an error by Chase Headley would lead to a loss.

The Padres are leaving Houston with another series win, but with today's loss and the Giants win in New York, the Padres lead in the NL West shrinks to a half game.

Can we put Gallagher, Jairston, and Mujica in a rowboat in the bay

and then sink it?

The Padres are good, but make no mistake: we've gotta beef up the linwup.

If I had a nickel from every SBN blog that has banned me, Arrowhead Pride would owe me 5¢.

I don't think so Tim.

Not yet for Jairston

He has made too many good plays before this. Emu and Gally on the other hand can go.

Jairston can also play everywhere

That’s valuable with Everth and Eck in the middle.

Not ready to cut and run on Mujica yet, either

California, what have you done to me?

by CurbEnthusiasm on May 9, 2010 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Bud needs to get away from this specific inning=specific pitcher thing

I’ll be the only reason he put in Mujica in the 6th was simply because it was the 6th inning. Didn’t think that it wasn’t the greatest idea to put in a pitcher who struggles with the HR and relies far to much on his fastball when the middle of the lineup was coming up in an extreme HR park against power hitters who are struggling and likely sitting fastball.

Yeah, with less IP than Mujica

and throwing four days ago with an off day tomorrow, that’s overworked alright.

I'm not the only one who didn't want to see Mujica in there

That sentiment didn’t just come from nowhere. I’m not even second guessing, I said what I would have liked, not what Bud should have done.

I think this was Mujica’s final test in games with leads and he failed it. Bud had to give him that test at some point, it’s just unfortunate that it cost us a game.

I didn't want to see mujica...

he’s a coin flip in whether he will be hit hard or K the side (maybe a bit of an exaggeration).

by Zen Blade on May 10, 2010 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions

but must admit

I was a bit surprised to see that Mujica and Gregerson have thrown the same amount this year…same as far as IP and appearances. Does Mujica move down a slot —-Ernesto Frieri anyone?

by texpadre on May 9, 2010 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

yup, I've had the same thoughts in those regards.

I think that all ball players are creatures of habit, and the old adage, “if it aint broke, why fix it?” comes to mind when trying to evaluate Black’s managerial tactics. When, then, does a Manager stop going to a guy once he’s disappointed on more than one occasion?

I, for one, would start using Mujica sparingly at this point. His fastball just seems to hang in the pulverizing zone without much movement on it. His body language is that of a guy who is wondering why he was brought in to face the opposing teams best hitters.

I agree here

I dislike these pre-determined slots – i.e. Adams must only come in the 8th when there is a lead …Gregerson is for the 7th only, etc.etc. What about trusting the ole’ gut once in awhile?

by texpadre on May 9, 2010 6:49 PM PDT up reply actions

If it was, he shouldn't have been put out there in the first place to do that.

He went out to play defense.

The hitting part was not supposed to come up. That is the problem with day to day injuries, you play short handed.

He can use a little more smart.

Seriously, though, he needs to go. He came into the game today giving up 1.84 home runs/9 innings. That’s going up now. Last year he gave up 1.35 HR/9. That’s unacceptable.

and seeing him and his Grandma bawling on the field made me feel a bit better about the repugnant finish to our game.

What a sucky game

I guess you can’t win them all but it sure sucks when you lose a game that is very winnable.

I’m pumped for the next two weeks of Padres baseball. Should be a great test to see where we really are against the Giants and Dodgers. If we can win this upcoming Giant series.

Heard on the radio that Saturday’s game against the Doyers is sold out. Glad I got my tickets the day they went on sale. Should be a electric atmosphere and we should put the hurt on the Dodgers the way each team has been playing

Errors and unearned runs are like the only way some teams can beat us. If we are going to win with Defense and Pitching, we cannot give away games like this.

agreed.

if we could just get Blanks and Venable to contribute a bit more often, we would be more of a force to reckon with.

though, word on the streets is, Blanks may already have a ticket out of town.
