Latos licks Astros, Padres win 7-0
Mat Latos was locked in and cruised through 8 innings, giving up two hits and no walks.
The pitching slugger also hit a pair of doubles. The first came when Jerry Hairston Jr. was able to advance to 2nd on a passed ball and Latos was allowed to hit away with the sacrifice bunt no longer necessary. Latos promptly slashed a ball over the head of the right fielder and into the seats for a ground rule double. His next double came from a hit to the gap in the 8th. I think that was the order of things, I may have that reversed though as the events of the game are mixed up in my brain.
Scott Hairston was no slouch either, hitting two home runs while being overshadowed by his pitcher.
My favorite part of the game? It was actually when Scott Hairston hit his cut off man and brother Jerry Hairston Jr. Jerry twirls around as David Eckstein throws himself to the ground to give Jerry a throwing lane. Presumably Jerry tries to hold his throw but ends up spiking the ball a few feet in front of him right into Eckstein's cute little tush. The ball was thrown so hard that it rolled to the third base line and the Astro runner advanced to third.
Embarrassed, Jerry repeatedly threw his glove into the air while Eckstein smiled coyly.

You know what's weird about that
I spelled it incorrectly. Then i caught myself and spelled it correctly, then I re-wrote the sentence and spelled it incorrectly again.
Dear jbox,
Maybe you’ve developed this weird subconscious need to have me correct you. If so… that’s weird.
Love, Jodes

anybody here ever use Stubhub?
how are the Consumer reports?

Love Stubhub
It’s super easy and it offers the best seats at the best price. It is great for the regular season because the majority of the seats are from season ticket holders that pass on the savings to you. For example, you can get the field level seats and premium section at Petco for $40-50 bucks instead of the $60 bucks it costs you if you buy them from padres.com. Not to mention that the season ticket seats are also better than the seats you would get in the same section from padres.com.
They tack on another $10 or so to the other but that’s pretty standard these days. I’ve used it a bunch and think it’s great

I've gotten
Field level seats that were normally $50 face for $15 each plus a $10 total fee.

Got field seats, section 107 (6 rows behind the Padres dugout)
$61 tickets each, I paid less than half that.
Used once for a Charger Game
Mixed feeling…
Great price, but…
I bought tix day of and when I went down to pick them up, they weren’t there. The Stubhub guy gave me “better” seats instead and said they’d waive my $10 Stubhub fee. Well, the seats where a bit worse, and I was still charged the fee.
The Chargers kicked ass that day, so I didn’t really care.
I just bought some sweet seats when the Padres come up to face the Giants this Tuesday!
Cannot WAIT to watch the series!!! I’m going to make it to at least two of the games;)

Nice, You live up in Frisco?
I’m thinking about making the trip for the series they have in August, I have a friend that lives up there. Definitely gotta make it if we’re still neck and neck in August. Regardless it would be fun.

Yup, been living up here for nearly three years now. Awesome city.
made it to a few games last year; not nearly as many as I should have. I dont know if you’ve been to AT&T before, but its a great Ballpark to catch a game at. There’s one thing that really baffles me about the design of the park, and its that HUGE glove out in Left-Center. Perhaps it’s the product of collateral damage during the HGH scandal — accidental injection?
definitely consider making the trip, just leave early enough to get past that LA traffic.

I love AT&T park!
I saw a game there a couple of years ago, and I’m not embarrassed to admit I went on the slide in the coke bottle. It’s a really great ballpark, definitely one of the best I’ve been too.
This is an environment of welcoming, and you should just get the hell outta here.
Sounds good
Yea, AT&T Park looks very nice, I will probably make the trip. Unlucky for me, I live in LA, so I get to bypass the traffic haha. Hopefully we can put some distance between us this upcoming series.

Just got home but was listening to the game off and on on the radio
Sounds like Mat had a dominant start which is great to hear. I think he really does have the stuff to be our ace in a a few years (next year?). Now I’m not going to get too carried away because after all it was against the Astros but it was nice to see him do so well with no HRs (or runs for that matter) and so many Ks (9 right?). Hopefully he can keep the momentum going and the Padres can keep up the winning while the Giants hopefully keep losing. Only one week until I’m back home in SD at Petco, can’t wait.

Just read through the game thread at the Astros blog
And they are so confused. They think Cesar Ramos is our second best reliever and Latos came over in the Peavy trade.
Someone with a membership should set them straight.

Little something I noticed...
Latos didn’t strike out a batter until the 4th inning. He ended up striking out 9. Those first 3 innings were probably important to him pitching so deep. Not because of pitch count but because he was actually pitching this time…not throwing. I didn’t see him throwing 95, 96, 97, instead he was throwing low 90’s and was very effective. I liked it.
7 shutouts and counting!
Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.

Ground rules?
What are the “ground rules” in Houston which made Latos’ hit a “ground rule double”? If it just bounced over the fence, that’s in the book rules and is true for all ballparks … a common misspeak by most, but not all, announcers …

anyone have ESPN insider?
Interesting article on Oswalt/Astros… and possible trade bait. Since we recently discussed some of this stuff, I was curious what Olney wrote.
I already asked that in my trade post
Nobody responded.
