    Well

Planning isn’t the right word. But, that is part of the proposed plan. CSUSM has ambitions to petition for NCAA division I or II status and could share the stadium with a minor league franchise. Obviously, a CSUSM location would also have the benefits of Sprinter access without expansion whereas most likely Carlsbad and Oceanside would not.

It would definitely be an interesting experiment

I think that for someone living in Oceanside/Carlsbad/Vista/San Marcos/Escondido a trip to downtown SD on a weeknight is pretty prohibitive unless you’re a night owl and don’t work 9 to 5. But, you could catch most of a AAA game in San Marcos and not be too inconvenienced by it.

Question to the Oregonians, do they televise all the Beaver games in the Portland area? I assume they are on the radio for every game, right? I wonder how that would work in the SD market given its sports radio and television issues.

Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't

by Wonko on May 6, 2010 12:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I would like to politely disagree.

The Kipper here can speak for himself later, but we all know that the Beavers are being forced to move. I think what he’s trying to say is that if the Beavs moved somewhere like Vancouver, he could still go to games. But if they move down south, not only do they get all the major league teams down there, they also get Lake Elsinore and the Beavs(or whatever they decide to call them). For myself, if I want to see a Padres game live, I have to drive 5 hours up to Seattle, at best. If the Beavers stayed close, I would only have to drive maybe 2 hours to see a team almost to big league caliber. So yeah, it’s frustrating to almost everyone that they are moving, and it’s be nice if they could stay closer instead of so cal.

by Jordan_Ming on May 6, 2010 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions

    It'd be nice

But it’s not exactly in the best interest of the major league club. Most teams prefer their AAA teams close. Portland was already pretty far, so asking them to move to somewhere like Vancouver is even more inconvenient. Plus, you’d have to work out an arrangement to move the current Vancouver team. Tacoma is closer than Vancouver anyway and they already have a AAA team.

It seems to me, what’s unfair here is that no one in the Oregon area is willing to accommodate a AAA team. I agree, that’s not fair for the residents, but don’t take it out on whoever gets the Padres AAA franchise since they are basically just going to go somewhere that wants them and is as close to home as possible. That place used to be Portland, but that ship sailed.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

She was talking about Vancouver, Wa

just across the Columbia river from Portland.

The owner of the Beavers, Merrit Paulson, has wanted to stay in Portland all along. It’s the city council that has not been able to pull the trigger on a new stadium here (PGE Park will be exclusively dedicated to soccer). There were discussions on building a stadium next to the Rose Garden (The Blazers arena), but the fine folks who run this city were “undecided” as to what to do with the available space…

If anyone has ever been to Memphis, TN than you know how cool the Beale Street district is. They’ve got the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinal’s AAA affiliate) a block or two away from Fed Ex arena (Memphis Grizzlies) and plenty of nightlife.

Though this has nothing to do with you guys , I am upset that the Beavs are leaving. It makes me want to shout “S.T.F.U!!!!!!!!!” at the top of my lungs at total strangers.

I have been to Memphis and I've seen the Redbirds

I might be inclined to think Beale carries the teams more than the teams carry it, but it is definitely a cool area.

    The article

Actually shows all the teams that have AAA teams close to the major league team. The Braves did something similar recently building a stadium a little over 20 miles away from Turner Field to house their AAA team.

It also shows the teams that have other level (A, AA, etc) minor league teams nearby.

I could see some validity to that

but they should also then make Lake Elsinore THE spot for all their youngest up and coming talent. So fans can see the talent both when it starts and when its almost big lead ready

See the new kids at LE, see them two years later at SM, then shortly thereafter at Petco.

    The day that happens

Seattle will start getting all the revenue from Japanese television. The Padres current 1/30th share of that is probably more than a 100% share of the Baha market.

    My thoughts on all this

#1… If they move AAA to San Marcos, they should move high A out of Lake Elsinore.

#2… Tennesse, particularly Memphis is awesome… I spent some time there last year.

#3… There ain’t shit to do in North county except coastal Encinitas and Solana beach… It closes up as tight as Chris Youngs Shoulder.

#4… I am stuck in Philly and sad its an off day because I would have loved to watch the Padres on “at bat”.

    Something to keep in mind

If High A moves out of Lake Elsinore they’d have to relocate to another California location or to the Southeast US because that’s where the two High A leagues are. I don’t think the organization would like moving their High A team all the way across the country and I don’t know what relocating in California would accomplish. I bet you that relocating the Elsinore team would piss off Dave Oster a lot more than just putting a team in San Marcos since he’d have to find a new team to come to Lake Elsinore.
