Padres murder Mets 18-6.
Padres are hit men. They're gonna have to pack the Mets up in trash bags and dump them in the bay. This can't be legal. I've been watching the first season of Dexter all weekend and when combined with tonight's game it's been a non-stop blood bath, I'm not sure which was more gruesome.
I don't even know how to recap a game like this because the Padres just went off. Jerry Hairston Jr. with a grand slam. Nick Hundley went 3-4 with more RBI's. Chris Denorfia went 3-4 and a bases loaded double. Chase Headley with a shot to center field. They are insane.
This was the most runs in Petco Park history by the Padres. I have to look up the most runs they've ever scored. I seem to remember like 22 runs. Not sure though.
Go Padres!

I went to my first Beaver game up there this year. Awesome Park. I saw a football game there a year before. Not as good. It wasn’t built right to be a good soccer of football park. It’s perfect for baseball

Exactly!
It’s sad what they are doing there. One of the oldest existing ballparks in the country and a long PCL history. I appreciate the Timbers and their fanbase, but it just seems odd in that place.

Well, he’s trying. I’m not saying he’s number one or anything. I’m just saying the general consensus is he will be our starting CF eventually, and will be good. Personally, I like to root for the underdog. Daniel Robertson will be EPIC.

Him sticking in CF was always 50/50
I think a lot of people saw him as a RF. His build and athleticism is very similar to Justin Upton and Jason Heyward, both CFs that moved to RF.

I am a fan of letting our prospect come along slowly.
I would prefer to see a move for a CF, I still have faith in Venable. Between Blanks/Denorfia/Cunningham I LF will figure itself out. CF is a question mark.
I think CF Defense is of the utmost importance for

routine grounder slightly to the hole between second and first, KJ circles round and gets placed perfectly to make the play, muffs it, it bounces to his left, he spins to pick it up ant throws it wildly wide to first base. Nah
I just want a super good pitching staff in Eugene. Plus, sooooo many outfielders in the system. Not saying it’s a bad thing, but we have a lot of good outfielders, I think. (preparing to be wonk’d)
by Jordan_Ming on May 31, 2010 11:38 PM PDT up reply actions
I agree
No more OFs, 1B or 3B. Unfortunately that basically limits you to pitchers since the first rounds lately haven’t offered many C, SS and 2B (plus you don’t really want to draft someone who has already moved to 2B unless his name is Chase Utley).

I read an article
where Jed said he liked drafting up the middle (C,SS,CF) which lines up with that well
Most GMs and scouting directors would say that
Especially if they feel that they don’t need guys that can move quickly through the minors (like we did in the Alderson days).

Allie may have the most electric fastball in this draft. Even though it may be relatively straight, his velocity is something I can buy into. But he has his downsides. His control is inconsistent and simply average at its best. His endurance and focus are questionable, leading many to feel that the bullpen is in his future. I like him, but I’m not betting the farm.
That report makes me queasy. Sounds like Aaron Poreda.

He's young
Give him a few years to work though it and build up confidence. Plus, pitchers are usually ahead of hitters in the lower levels.
I don’t know, I just have a feeling he’d be a good pick.

Sure, but its in the low minors so far. Its got to make the climb up the ladder.
And the Padres need more of it, we have a solid base of league average players in the system (or at least replacement level player would be more accurate).
My pick heavily depends on who is taken before the Padres pick....
If Yasmani Grandal is there (he has gone in the mock I have seen from 4th to 15th) that would be my pick. Its either him or one of the high school arms.
I like the idea of Grandal
But you’d like some upside in your first round picks. That doesn’t strike me as a guy Hoyer would go for since he’s basically a reach at the top of the first round (which teams tend to do for catchers).
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Yea, his upside is limited. But i like him.
It really depends on who is still there at 9.
Grandal would be nice
He had a great year and catcher is definitely a need but I dont know at number 9
All depends who is there like you say
It’s a lot different than last year

Let it be said, that on this day,
henceforth and hitherto, that the indestructible man, whom goes by no other name, vanished into destruction when his name was called by Selig as the padres #9 draft pick. Let us have a moment of silence for the power that this curse doth wield.

BTW
One thing I don’t like about choice is that his value seems contingent on him having “some” pop in his bat, which we all know can reduce to zero pop at Petco (Chase Headley anyone?). If you want to draft an OF, he’d better be super athletic or have a lot of power.

As a Mets fan, "this" sucks.
But as a former San Diego resident for 13 years and an overall baseball fan, it’s good to see the Padres playing some darn good b-ball w/a bunch of “no-names”. Not only is there not much coverage of the Padres, but also any coverage about the team seems to focus on, “why are these guys winning? when will they stop? when will they come back to earth? They shouldn’t be winning anything right now”
Don't forget
“When will they trade Adrian Gonzalez?”

Let's cut the Mets some slack...
After all, their payroll is only $100 Million more than ours ;)
Was at the game with MiL, I’ve never seen such incompetence on the field as the Mets coughed up last night – they looked shockingly bad, I can’t believe that they are really that awful.

That's shocking.
Angels have a payroll of $70-75 million and they’re consistently in the playoffs.
The Mets have a $100 million payroll and the last time they’ve made the playoffs was in 2006.
Baseball works in crazy ways.

The Angels' payroll is routinely over $100 million.
It’s been $100m or more every year since 2004 except once, and that one time it was $97m.

It just comes down to a competent
…General manager…
and the idea of diminishing returns. Is that $20 dollar talent have an overall worth to a team that is greater than 4 $5 million talents? With good scouting, absolutely not. Its all a gamble, and I think there is probably a soft correlation between payroll & wins… but baseball is a game about knowledge tempered with instincts… a great talent with crap make up is going nowhere. A young team playing with intangibles and who maximizes their strengths while minimizing their weaknesses is awesome… sort of like my signature from the great jbox.

run orgy is great
But do not want a repeat of the Atlanta series. Open with a 17-2 shellacking then lost the next two. I doubt our posts affect the outcome of the game, but stay focused GLB.
I hope we align some awful pitching (Corriea) vs. offensive explosion. I expect that if we win the next few, it will be in the 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 variety.
I'm holding my breath for more offense, but last night really was a perfect storm
Combination of an ump with a very tight strike zone plus a starter who couldn’t find his command plus a few bad relievers. Some of those guys, the only way they could get a strike was a fastball right over the middle and even the Padres can hit BP pitching.
More than the home opener vs. ATL, it reminded me of that first game against the Mariners. I want to believe we can win one of the next two to take another series, but they do have their best starters going.
I've been impressed with Hundley's improvements this year so far.
I think his improvements as a hitter may be real. His BABIP is pretty high—.362, so we can expect that to fall off. But his walk rate is a nice 12.6%, and he’s showing some power with a .177 ISO. Looking back at his minor league numbers, he was always able to hit the ball pretty hard, with a total minor league ISO of around .200, and walk at about a 10% rate.
So while I don’t think he’s going to keep up the crazy pace of the last few days, he could settle down into a solid, average to slightly above average hitter.

is probably not the best place for keeping balls in the park. There are worse places for sure. But Dodgers stadium can give up its fair share of HRs while still being a pitchers park.

The only reason we were 25-25
is because we had gone on an improbable 10-game win streak that only brought us 1 game over .500 and still about 9 games behind the Dodgers.
