Padres lose to Ubaldo Jimenez, 5-2

Ubaldo Jimenez is like... real good at baseball, right? He already has a no-hitter this season and he managed to strike 13 out tonight at Petco. On top of all that, he threw like 140 pitches against us.

Luckily, there's only one Ubaldo Jimenez. Unluckily, he's slated to start the next two games against us.

Some notes:

  • Clint Barmes found one of those delightful spots up the left field line that, who knows, maybe landed fair. Here's my suggestion box suggestion for the night: When you have some fans complaining that the sight lines aren't always ideal at Petco, make sure you have a camera covering the blind spots so that they don't get featured on the telecast.
  • When we scored against Ubaldo, I flashed back a bit to when Rocky finally made Drago bleed. Like it was nice to see that he was human until I remembered that sea serpents bleed too, and sometimes banshees.
  • Ubaldo hit 101 mph on the gun. I've driven that fast.
  • In the postgame show, Scanman suggested that some pitchers fall victim to what I call the "Marty McFly" syndrome, when they see the other guy pitching 101 mph. Nobody wants to fall victim to that. All it gets you is a motherf_ckin' TIME MACHINE.
  • Kevin Correia pitched well for the most part, but did you see that Ubaldo Jimenez?

Random story: There was a homeless dude in a wheelchair at the trolley station today who kept trying to pick a fight with me. I was just standing there, playing my Nintendo DS, and this guy rolls up and starts yelling at me, trying to roll his wheel chair into me. I kept ducking behind a nearby tree while he kept saying, "If I come atcha, you betta move n***a!" And then he'd try to bump into me and then he'd yell, "GIMME A DOLLAR!" What made it more annoying was he was wearing a Dodger cap. My videogame instincts kicked in and I thought about luring him onto the tracks at an opportune time when an incoming train could crush him, but then instead I just walked over to the other end of the platform.

Bright side.

Big drop off after Jimenez, especially with De la Rosa and Hammel out. Good chance to win the next two.

You wouldn't have faced DLR and Hammel anyway

Smith and Cook have followed Ubaldo all season.

I feel confident in saying

that neither is pitching very well right now. Especially Smith.

I mean, Cook his still getting his ground balls

but he’s doubled his walk rate. Not good.

That's absolutely the truth

He completely lost his sinker his first three starts, so he started throwing more sliders, curves and changeups, which he had less control of. He found the sinker a bit his last two starts, and I’m betting it will sink fairly well at Petco. Of those four, I’m most confident with Cook and Chacin atm.

I really think Bud failed by sending Correia out for the 7th.

I thought so...but I can't really question Buddy

and Darren on pitching moves.
They’ve been pretty spot on so far.

They've been kind of lucky

There been multiple times where a reliever has been brought in for a really tough situation and come out unscathed. You’re playing with fire if you do that too much. No matter how good your bullpen is.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Yeah

but in some situations isn’t it just necessary to do something? If a starting pitchers walks 3 batters to load the bases later in the game, I’d say that calling in a reliever is your best bet to get out of the jam.

by sixpakfrombelgium on May 4, 2010 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, absolutely

But, it would certainly help if you had the foresight to know that your starting pitching is getting tired and going to have control issues.

Although to be fair to Correia

the ump squeezed him horribly on those two walks.

Wow

I just looked at the PitchF/X from gameday. I think squeezed is too loose a termed. He suffocated him on that walk.

And who knows

if Correia gets Olivo, maybe he doesn’t lay one right in there to Stewart who hit the double.

Thought I'd mention

The Rockies are 4-12 in games not started by Jimenez or De La Rosa. Yeah, big drop-off there.
