San Diego Padres Fan Confidence Poll: 5/3/2010
Another week. Another Fan Confidence Poll. Keep in mind that tens of San Diegans are relying on your vote to determine whether or not they should be dedicating resources towards their San Diego Padres Fanhood this season. This is important, heavy stuff.
This part be Boilerplate:
The rules are simple. On a scale of 0 to 10, 0 being no confidence at all, 10 being absolute confidence, How confident are you in the San Diego Padres organization?
"Confidence" is just about anything you want to interpret it as. The front office, the future prospects, the play on the field, the park, etc etc etc.
Here's a chart that shows that we're on a slight incline:
Next week's chart will be tré interesante!

Yeah, I'm at 8.
I can’t imagine anything is going to change that throughout the season unless they make some horrible trade or something. I’m looking at the big picture here… and I like the direction we’re going. Even if we don’t keep winning, I still think we’re making the right decisions for long term success.

The Logistics of the Beerfest tents and lines

Lol@ that graph
I love how small sample sizes make graphs look stupid.
I voted 9, because the boys are playing great (which is worth at least a 7), BUT I’m also participating in the May Rally Beard thingy. That’s gotta be worth another two points.
I went from 6 to 7
until they play at SF next week and then
the Cards later this month.
These are the best teams in the NL.
If we beat the Rays in Tampa in June
then it’s on.
"I post like canned meat."
Still at 7
Losing to great pitchers is one thing, not putting competitive ABs together in any way shape or form is another. Let’s see what they do against the best pitchers in COL/LAD/SFG in the next few series.
Staying put at 7. Need a larger sample size to change it...
however I am about a number 8 confident that my confidence will grow from that 7.
I am at a 10 in wishfullness
that I will be at a 9 in hopefulness
that there is a probability I might someday
go from a 7 to an 8
"I post like canned meat."
Still at 5 (I've decided that's where I was in each of the first two votes)
I love the team we have on the field right now, period.
I am not sure about what’s going to happen though in the future…. Our leadership/ownership has been COMPLETELY silent on this angle… or rather, has given us no indication of what they will do.
I have previously listed things that would improve my confidence.
Here is a new one:
Announce that we are keeping Adrian this entire year and that we are going to do everything we can to make the playoffs, this year.
what's the bad thing you're expecting them to do?
I think it’s in their best interest to put a winner on the field one way or another. San Diego has shown that they won’t support a loser unlike the Cubs for example.
by Dex on May 3, 2010 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions
I am expecting them to
trade away Adrian and/or Bell this year, and the other one next year. This make me doubt that them.
This team can compete now, which is a surprise to most of us (including me). I felt like this was a .500 year, and that next year would be our big push. However, we are currently a dominant force in the NL, and it is a result of 3 or 4 commodities that this team has.
1. Superb bullpen: we will have it this entire year
2. Solid starting pitching (but not excellent): unknown factor
3. Stellar defense: Based upon this season and last year, I think this stays with us.
4. SPEED/Stolen bases: We’ve seen this on defense, on the base paths, and on the infield hits that our guys can run out to get on base… This is also for real.
So, the only question (in my mind) is our SP. Other than that, this team looks like it is solid.
Also,
I have doubts about the ownership’s ability to restock the team. I am especially worried about their ability to rebuild the bullpen. This was one of Towers’s specialties. But honestly, many relievers don’t last for more than a couple of years (unfortunately)… If we lose Bell, sure we still have all of the guys that Towers traded for/signed… but what next?
If we trade away Adrian, we immediately lose our “contender” status, in my opinion. They are unproven, so… I have doubts.
It would be easy to reassure me and many fans if Hoyer or someone would just say “we would be crazy to trade Adrian away. We have a phenomenal team, and my job is to win the division this year, and to bring home a world series in the near future.”
My loyalty here is not to Adrian or Heath, it is to our team making the playoffs, and hopefully to the world series some day soon (I have serious doubts if a SD team can ever win a superbowl/world series). Adrian is just a great fit for this team, period. I don’t know why you dangle his name out there as trade bait. Just say, he’s not for trade, period.
Every time that we spend money supporting the Padres, the ownership gets a piece of that action. So… I expect them to take that money and use it to give us a good team… AND NOT BE IN A PROCESS OF CONSTANT REBUILDING…. which is my biggest fear.
However, we are currently a dominant force in the NL
There isn’t really any evidence of this.

What I know about "This team"
Is that in its current form it finished ’09 hot… and continued it 6 months later. We are playing to our strengths, winning ball games, and defying expectations.
I doubt the ‘02 Angels or the 08’ Rays were “expected” to do much.
As the great Lou Brown once said:
"I’d just like to point out that every newspaper in the country has picked us to finish last. The local press seems to think that we’d save everyone the time and trouble if we just went out and shot ourselves. Me, I’m for wasting sportswriters’ time. So I figured we ought to hang around for a while and see if we can give ’em all a nice big shitburger to eat!
GO PADRES A CURRENT DOMINATE FORCE IN THE NL!

I don’t recall the expectations of the ’02 Angels, but the ’08 Rays were definitely expected to contend.

Interesting
The ’01 Angels were 75-87 and ’02 Angels finished 99-63 and the ’07 Rays were 66-96 and the ’08 Rays were 97-65.
I haven’t studied what the sports writers of 2008 or 2002, but I have a feeling they were not picking EITHER of those teams to do well.

Is misinformed at best. I don’t think there was a sports writer in the world, unless Scott Kazmir’s mom is one, that expected to see them with a winning season.

I found a couple prediction pages from MLB.com and ESPN.com
Here and here. This certainly isn’t intended as a comprehensive survey or representative sample. None of these guys here predict a playoff appearance for the Rays. A couple pick Longoria as Rookie of the Year and Maddon as Manager of the Year. That’s it.

Willie Mays Hayes flashed the speed in spring training and solid veteran additions Eddie Harris, Roger Dorn, and Jake Taylor were immediate upgrades. Couple that with the raw power displayed by Cuban bad-ass Pedro Cerrano and I’m sure a writer or two had them flirting with 80+ wins.

That the Padres don’t have. I say the rest are all either on par or better, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t be beaten.

Major Problem Areas
The thing is, major problem areas in April do not necessarily translate to season long problem areas and April strengths or non problem areas do not necessarily translate to season long strengths or non problem areas.
I would, however, agree that the Diamondbacks are not better. However, they’ve played a lot better, especially on offense, than I would have expected. So, either they are playing over their heads and are pretty bad or all they have to do is fix their bullpen issues and they are on par with the Padres.

Haven’t played some…
But we split series with Dbacks (including sweep)
We swept Giants
We beat the Marlins (in Florida)
Braves beat us…
And we are dealing with the Rockies now…
I would say the Cardinals and Phillies might be…
Dodgers, NO WAY.
Braves… not currently
Giants… might be. Their pitching is as good, but I think we are faster and have better defense.
Rockies… maybe
We swept the Giants a couple of times last year
We must have finished with a better record than them, right?
