Padres defeat Nats and lock up first place through May

I think my favorite part about locking up first place for two months is the first placeness of it, coupled with starting the summer in first place. It feels like it's been a while.

I'm shocked - SHOCKED - that tonight wasn't a sellout. Do people really not like the 5:30PM starts? I know it's the Nats, but c'mon.

Actually, what am I talking about. I was at home eating a taco.

GO PADRES!!!

Padres have had 4 home Saturdays

One was against the Dodgers and sold out. One was the first Saturday game where the opponent was the DBacks and had over 31,000. And the third actually had slightly less attendance; 25,619 vs the Brewers the day after Beerfest.

The next home Saturday I believe is the scarf giveaway against the hated Mariners

I will be in attendance helping the cause.

They do need a trophy for the yearly series though

Rivalries are always better with trophies.

I was thinking the "Pacific Trophy"

Where the winner gets the Pacific Ocean. If we tie I suppose we can share it.

Our knack for avoiding big losing streaks is really nice

Only 1 losing streak of 3 games (the Dodger sweep). All other losses have come as solo losses or 2 game streaks.

Yea it's huge

We always bounce back after a loss or a couple of losses. We have avoided a losing streak which is crucial. Let’s win another series tomorrow.

That's a big difference between this year and last.

In 2008 and 2009 we’d have stretches of losing like 12 of 13 games, with a lone win sandwiched between six game losing streaks.

Its hard to get on a losing streak when you have shut-down pitching.

That, and the defense shows up most every game even when the hits are hard to come by.

are the Mets playing any good lately

what do the P match ups look like for Mets series ? ..obviously want to rack up as many wins as possible before pitching hits inevitable rough patch . Our home June schedule is not terribly difficult…we do however go on the road to Philly for four and play the Rays for three at Tropicana…

Pitching Matchups

Correa-Takahashi
LeBlanc-Pelfrey
Richard-Santana

Santana has the highest ERA of those 3 pitchers and his is 3.03.

They had won 5 in a row before losing Friday and today to Milwauke

Pitching.

Beat the Phils 3 straight times. Nats non-win nirvana. Phils won the next one and even for Halladay’s perfecto they only managed one unearned run.

Speaking of tacos

The airheads sitting behind me thought that there were actually people out somewhere MAKING THE TACOS FOR US. And that they’d get real tacos, rather than coupons for them.

There were a ton of empty seats. Man.

Somebody get Venable out of the leadoff spot, please ...

but I guess until E-Cab comes back it’s going to be his spot.

by Lancers46 on May 29, 2010 10:25 PM PDT reply actions

Since no one on this team can hit in the lead off slot.

They should just leave Gwynn there and limit the damage.

How about we give Denorfia

A crack at the leadoff spot? There really isn’t anyone Except E-Cap and Scotty that could pull this off, so why not Denny? What do we have to lose?

Some UC Scores tonight

It came up in the open thread earlier, but UCSD lost Div. II championship 6-4
UCR destroyed UCD 26-7
UCI beat LBSU 6-1
I think UCSB beat UoP but I’m not sure
And I don’t know about Cal or UCLA

Cal and UCLA

are both out of the running for the Pac-10 championship (Pac-10 does not have a tournament) as #2 ASU clinched the title with a win on Saturday. Cal won their game on Saturday against #21 Oregon team and #7 UCLA lost to #20 WSU. UCLA needed an ASU loss, a win of their own and a win on Sunday to take the title. UCLA will be in the College World Series Regionals and Cal most likely will end their season vs Oregon on Sunday.
