Padres drop last game to Cardinals but walk away with series win
I've been a bit under the weather the last two days so I had to leave midway through the game. It was a beautiful Summer day at the ballpark until sometime around the 5th inning when it turned freezing cold. It was also about that time that the Cardinals started launching baseballs into the seats. Anyway the Padres rallied but came up short while I drove home.
Bob Scanlan has a great blog post answering a fans accusations:
Yes, Cesar, they may lose by triple digits tomorrow, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they beat the Cardinals this series in two tough games. Just tired of all the negativity every night when these guys are busting their ass and beating people with no excuses. One thing I learned in my 20 years of playing professionally, there are no guarantees in life, and especially in baseball, so enjoy the good times when you have them regardless of what you think may happen down the road.
It drives me crazy that some fans think that the season is predetermined because the stats somehow show that the 2010 Padres are destined to fail. Why bother even watching the games? Why bother being a fan if you supposedly know that the Padres won't win more than 71 games? These fans can't Keep the Faith, because they had no faith to begin with.
In the email he tells Scan that we should wait until the end of the season before we make any judgments about how good the team is. Meanwhile this team is playing great baseball and putting together a string of series wins unlike any team in the Petco era and he's missing out on it because he's so focused on the negativity. Don't be this type of fan! Enjoy this because it doesn't happen very often.
Go Scanman! Go Padres!

The tightness, I'm not really concerned with; that's pretty whateverth.
But, yeah, up to the knees- and stirrups, not socks.

I do not believe
that acknowledging where you are on the championship path, takes away from the enjoyment of individual games. The road to a championship starts long before April 1 of the championship year. The Padres started on that path mid season 2009 and just now sorting out who their core players will be. If that core emerges this year great, if not they are still making progress towards the goal.
Thanks JBox, and to all for reading the post.

actually show the Padres to be a pretty good team. One of the best in the National League.

Latos, Garland and Richard have 3 pretty damn good starters
and the pen is as good as any in baseball. I’m leery of the fact that the offense is incredibly weak . Yet, it’s hard to argue with 28-19 (.595). Mind you we are only 30% of the way through the season and I am not sure that the staff can continue to sport a 2.8 ERA throughout the campaign but I really think teams are starting to come in to Petco now a little bit “psyched out:” about the fact that it plays so big .Therefore, at the very least, I believe that we can continue to win 2-1 & 1-0 games throughout the rest of season at home. And most encouraging is, if the Pads played .500 baseball the rest of the year, they still win 85 games, which would keep them in the race to the end.

I only get angry
Because I care, and I want my boys to succeed. That said… when I look at the standings I think F_CK YEA! We got one of the best teams in baseball… not “Wait till the season’s over”
We are one of the best teams… but because we have “unsustainable ERA” But because… 28 times out of 47 times we have ended the game with the lead. I don’t give a sh_t if the whole team hits .100, .125, .200… if we win ball games I am happy. I will take 1-0, 2-1, 8-3 with a -3 win differential with a .666 win percentage all season… WHY? Because winning matters, and nothing else… and on that metric we KICK ASS!!!!!

True Statement.

it's the only stat that matters W-L but again we are a 1/3 in..
nothing wrong with critical thinking and debate -I have watched enough baseball to know that holes always get exposed-it’s the beauty of the game…..most good GM’s will tweak based on concerns….they are not necessarily negative naysayers but rather pragmatists…I think Hoyer has expressed some concerns as well….
And rightly so. Hoyer's not dumb.
He knows the team needs more offense. But he also knows that there isn’t much to be done about it right now. Teams don’t throw in the towel in May, and there’s going to be other teams also in the market for improvement.
Plus, despite the record this team isn’t in win-now mode, and Hoyer can’t make a move unless it makes sense in the long as well as short term. I’m sure he’ll explore all the options, but he’s not going to sacrifice the future. For now, and probably a while, the team we have now is all we’re going to get.

Wins and losses are what get you into the post-season.
But record alone is a poor indicator of future performance. If all you care about is enjoying the moment, then it’s all you need.
But if you want to know if the wins will keep coming, and at what pace, you have to look deeper.

right on the mark
of course, nothing can be done at the moment and we can rack up as many wins as possible in June until mid-July . But an improvement will need to be made and should. It will be a major test of the early Hoyer regime – can he pull off a gem and get someone outside of the Podsednik’s of the world ?

Padres 2010 "Let it Ride"
Depends on who's available and at what price.
I’m certain he wouldn’t mind dealing the Carrillos, Inmans, and Poredas of the system, but he can’t part with a Forsythe or Castro or Decker, and it often takes a gem prospect like that to land a real improvement.

Castro is the only one that it would really hurt dealing
Not sure we would get anything at all for Poreda or Carrillo. Inman is still fairly young and is having a decent year but is the kind of guy that would fetch a Podsednik.

I think there is doubt because of where we are...San Diego
We have never won a championship and are choking more than we are succeeding. Look at the Chargers every year in the playoffs, look how the Padres slipped away a few years back only to lose in game 163. San Diego is accustomed to losing and we don’t want to get our hopes up to only have them shattered.
I currently live in LA (miss SD everyday) and I am also a Lakers fan. There is sometimes unwarranted panic with the Lakers but for the most part there is never really any true doubt. The city expects the Lakers to win every year and there is never really any thought of losing, that’s because they have a track record of winning, unlike San Diego sports teams.
With that being said, I am stoked with every Padres win. Am I enjoying this start? Hell yea, I rub it in to my Doyer friends everyday. Guess who’s in first? PADRES. Is this team exciting? Oh yea, way more than in years past. Does this team have potential? Huge potential. Will I be surprised if we don’t make the playoffs? Not really. But I think the point is, even though the team is playing a boring style of ball, it is very exciting for a team that was predicted to suck, doing so well. People have doubt because they don’t know any better. There is probably a lot of people around the city that don’t know who Mat Latos is. With every win, people will become more familiar.
It should also be noted that San Diego is a fairwheather city. One reason I have a little resentment for the Chargers is because they way the city treats them, unlike the Padres. The city is enamored with the Chargers and is constantly in “Charger mania” and it gets pretty annoying. I remember when the Chargers were a joke and couldn’t put enough butts in the stadium to get the games on tv. I think if the Padres continues to win, the city will really get behind the Padres and it would be a very very very exciting time.
In summary, there is doubt because in the past San Diego sport teams are notorious for failing. I’m looking for the 2010 Padres to change everything.

A lot of people still tell me they are holding out in frustration over the low payroll and the perceived lack of commitment to winning.
They don’t want to “give this team any more of their money” and they think it’s a fluke that they are winning right now without scoring runs. I keep telling them that the weather could not be fairer and now would be a good time to enjoy a ride on this bandwagon because it hasn’t been this good around here in a decade, but some people just want to stay mad. People of San Diego, if you want to vote with your dollar, spend it now and show the team that they will make more money with a winning club.
I got that sense from the e-mail Scan received.
That he doesn’t want to “give the organization more money”.
I’m not sure I understand the logic there. It’s a fact that they can’t spend much money. But if you want them to spend more, they need more revenue. But you won’t give them more revenue?

Negative feedback loop...
Happens all of the time. Like when home prices go down because people don’t want to buy out of fear that housing prices are going down.
If I understand this correctly:
Had the Padres filled one of their roster slots with a $20M per year has been, that would of been percieved as commitment to winning.
Yes.
I am not one of those people (see Jim Edmonds) but I talk to many who still view the Padres as AAA because they dealt Peavy and haven’t signed a major free agent. Of course, sustained winning cures all. If we’re still in first when school gets out for the summer – look out.

One way ticket to giants-ville
They have a 90million payroll and about the same level of offense. People do go to the games though, but I get the feeling that the Bay is more flush with cash than most places right now.
I agree with Scan
Everyone is so damn negative. Why not just enjoy the team playing well and stop trying to project ahead. It is really annoying to listen to all you negative jag-offs whine constantly about everything. Do the rest of the normal fans a favor and go away.

no worries
its Their loss, not ours. We get to witness winning baseball, believe, root, have fun, anticipate, laugh, cheer, cry.
They can continue being miserable waiting in line to pay $300 a bottle for table service.
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
I have no faith in the Padres
Don’t really need any right now, as they are winning. The evidence is there and irrefutable, this team is playing better baseball that almost all other teams at this point.
As somebody who enjoys looking at the statistics, I do see a lot of red flags. However I will enjoy the ride until the winning stops.
ps. a little statistical hope, fo me, lies in the fact that our winning doesn’t seem to depend much on a single player playing out of his mind. Which should make the performance a bit more robust.
