Padres beat Mariners like a billion to 3
And now we're back in first place all by ourselves.
The nice thing about being in first place going into an off day is that you'll have a full work Monday where you can tell your Dodger Fan and Giant Fan co-workers to eat your ass. And when they call you an idiot Padres fan or something like that, you can pretend that you couldn't understand what they were saying because their mouth was full of your ass, which they are eating.
GO PADRES!!!

Will be to send Cedric Hunter to Portland.

Well
I would say there are a couple of guys on the major league roster whose jobs aren’t secure if Durango does well.

I believe that this time around
Denorfia has a better chance to stick, than Durango. If they see Durango as a prospect, they won’t want him coming off the bench for the rest of the season.
I believe you could make a case for both sticking
Depending on how well Durango does. But, I agree they aren’t calling him up to put him on the bench. As a switch hitter though he can offer some good platoon opportunities.

What do you think of Hunter?
I know it’s his 2nd year in AA, but he’s still 22 and seems to be rebounding from his bad 2009. Any reason to expect anything good from him?

Not really
He’s another potential 4th OF type who can’t really play CF. Of course, on the Padres that’s practically starting material.

When BA made him our top prospect in 2007
I think there was a thought he could play CF and would develop at least some power and steal bases. Even though he’s still young it just doesn’t seem like that will happen.

You'd think that the padres would get lucky at a certain point,
and one of these prospects would eventually pan out.
whats your theory behind the lack of development of our prospects? it always seems like they hit a wall at a certain point.

There's no theory
A lot of prospects hit walls or don’t pan out. We haven’t exactly had the highest caliber of prospects to begin with aside from Mat Latos. The only other guys in the last couple of years that cracked Top 50 lists were Headley and Blanks. Blanks is 22 and typically the types of hitters that make it in the big leagues that young end up as Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, Ken Griffey Jr. or Alex Rodriguez. Lesser guys like Paul Konerko, Mike Sweeney or even Adrian Gonzalez had their struggles as 22 or 23 year olds and ended up as fine major leaguers. Savior probably just isn’t destined for greatness. Or maybe he’ll be a guy like Nelson Cruz, Marlon Byrd or Ryan Ludwick where things just take a while for him to adjust to the major leagues and he maybe pushing 30 before he really breaks out.
As for the rest, well you can expect a high rate of busts when nobody thought that much of them to begin with.

I think Savior did pan out
He has hit above league average every year he has been in the majors (except 2007 when he only had 21 PAs). He will prob never be an all star but he is a solid every day player.
Also it looks like LeBlanc and Stauffer are finaly starting to pan out as well.
He did pan out
But, he also hit a wall, no?

He's not the most physically imposing guy in the world.
Put another way, he looks like a weakling. He’s going to have to start a strength training program and keep it going all year if he wants to develop consistent doubles power. He’s got potential, it just might take a while to get there.
"Never have a motto, that's what I always say" - Me
I don't think strength is the issue
It takes almost as much strength to crush a pitch for a double in AA or AAA as it does in the majors and Savior was able to do it down there. It seems to me the issue comes from approach and pitch recognition. A lot of his hits are bloojos and ground balls with eyes. Those aren’t going to be doubles just by improving strength.

Anyone else see
that Donovan Tate’s going to be sent to Eugene this summer? I wish it was Fort Wayne but it’s better than him not playing at all!
His first game
will be one full year after he was drafted. I hoped his second game comes before the two year marker.
It's not a big deal
If he does well enough in Eugene its not unheard of for him to go to Lake Elsinore next year. Although, that it is usually reserved for college players. Another way to look at it is that we may not want to move Everett Williams or Tate out of CF and if they play on the same team they can’t both play the position.

The outcome of the card series...
Will tell me a lot about whether or not this team is a fluke. So far the schedule has been funky, with way too many games against the giants and the astros. It will be nice to play a team that is actually good. (though they are on a slide now right)
If last year has any bearing
Then the key is going to be avoiding the big inning. Almost every loss we had to the Cards they’d put up a crooked number early and protect their lead. If we can at least keep it close we’ve got a chance to win the series. Or at least not embarrass ourselves as much as we used to.

so, if we can manage to avoid any given teams number one starter, and catch them when they’re not playing so good, we may have a fairly good season?

They obviously have seen enough now
That they think he can contribute to the major league team. It’s easy to defend either stance of keeping him down or calling him up. It all depends on where his development is at and we don’t know that just from looking at his numbers.

Someone said in the OT that it's been a long time since we had a successful interleague series

taco hat?
I am trying to find a fitted 69-73 (all brown with mustard sd) but am having no luck. Saw one in the stands at the seattle game so they must exist.
yeah, the famed taco hat!
got one for me and me lady friend. It’ll be pretty sweet to wear those caps to the games, and around the city.
69-73, eh? that sounds like a pretty obscure sighting. Good luck with that, let me know if you do find them, sounds like a nifty looking cap. I should say that I’m fairly partial to authentic caps, but that green one they sell is actually decent looking.

I just saw this years 4th of July hat, its white with a blue bill, and the “flag” SD on the front. I’m kinda torn on it. It’s a pretty cool hat but then it’s not very Padres if you know what I mean. Taco hat is a classic. I was actually thinking about getting one.

I'm cautiously optimistic on Durango.
He’s got serious flaws and they’ve all been mentioned. The ridiculous CS%, bad instincts, no power. But we’ve got to keep in mind how bad things really are at the leadoff spot. The UT reported that all the Padres leadoff hitters have hit an unbelievable .170 with a .264 OBP. It just flat can’t get any worse than that.
We can counter his horrible CS% by putting the brakes on him for now. Clearly, he’s got a lot to learn. So only give him the green light when we are facing weak armed catchers or pitchers who can’t hold runners.
With his speed it’ll be difficult to keep him below a .300 OBP. He might even flirt with .350 and wouldn’t that be a treat for Adrian. If he could do that then his lack of power is irrelevant.
Eckstein’s good at moving runners over and the hit and run. Durango gives Bud some options to manufacture a run. He’s not a good player but I can see a scenario where he can help significantly.
"Never have a motto, that's what I always say" - Me
Do we really think they'll insert him in the leadoff spot?
I’ve got to think Venable’s going to get a good run up there for a while and Durango will hit down in Cabrera land. If anything, I could see Cabrera heating up and moving to the top before Durango goes there. But, we’ll see.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
I think Scott and Venable were desperation moves.
I don’t think they’re commited to anyone at this point. Durango makes the most sense as a lead off hitter. His skill set matches the job description, anyway. If Venable were lighting it up at the lead off spot he might be making them think twice, but he hasn’t. Cabrera’s failed utterly batting lead off. He hit’s better further down in the order.
Another potential benefit of the move is that there will be situations where #8 Cabrera and #1 Durango will be on base for Eckstein who’s shown good ability to make contact in high leverage situations.
"Never have a motto, that's what I always say" - Me
If all you're worried about is Will scoring more runs
That will assuredly come if he is at the top of the lineup. The question here is whether it will be more runs than the next guy.
