Should San Diego go after Roy Oswalt?
Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt wants out of Houston.
HOUSTON (AP)—Astros general manager Ed Wade says ace Roy Oswalt has asked to be traded. Oswalt has made nine straight quality starts to open the season but is 2-6 despite a 2.66 ERA. He has gotten the lowest run support in the league.
Wade says he wants to win with Oswalt on the Astros. Houston went into Friday night’s game against Tampa Bay with the worst record in the National League at 14-27.
Wade says Oswalt’s agent, Bob Garber, contacted Houston owner Drayton McLane earlier this week to make the request.
As good as the rotation we have with Garland, Correia, LeBlanc, Latos, and Richard, and with the uncertantiy of Chirs Young's return to the lineup, I think the Padres should seriously consider picking up Oswalt. The years of service Oswald has been in the majors could be a huge asset for young guys like Mat, Wade and Clayton. And if CY does return and we do decide to pick up Oswalt...a rotation with Oswalt, Young, Garland, Corrreia and Latos? Plus LeBlanc and Richard on reserves? We would have a deadly rotation and depth to match. So, Friar faithful, would it be a good move to go after Roy Oswalt?

Roy Oswalt
He could make the difference, as long as we dont give up too much to get him, we cant afford to let the doggers get him.
given a different set of circumstances...
circumstances in San Diego being what they are…
I really don’t see our roster changing at all. I would even be surprised if we upgraded it to make a run at the West; that is, if we stayed in contention.

Sorry about that

I'll take
Garland to Portland for $800, Alex.

I tried that revolution over at BFTB
Apparently people want to comment that they agreed with another comment without actually rec’ing it or giving any additional insight into their thoughts on it. Weirdos.

agreed
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
We need a 6 man rotation
leaving 1 pitcher on stand by for 7 innings when
the starter melts down like tonight
"I post like canned meat."
Oswalt late in the season for a playoff run
makes sense (imo). However, during the season I don’t see how it makes sense unless one of our pitchers starts to struggle on a regular basis.
I like Oswalt, I think he would be a nice improvement because he immediately comes and gives us some credibility. However, unless there are injuries or pitcher’s not playing well (one start does not qualify), it is difficult to see how he helps us. I think he would be awesome for the playoffs though.
Haven't we already decided
that Ed Wade is delusional and will want way more than we can afford to give up?

Yeah, what would we have to give up to get him?
I just want to get paid to draw naked girls, is that so much to ask?
Too much.
I think we’re talking top prospects (Dykstra, maybe even Decker or Tate), when in reality he should accept a package of Cesar Carillo/Aaron Poreda/Will Inman.
The Padres are good, but make no mistake: we've gotta beef up the linwup.

Dykstra is a top prospect now?!?!?!
As for the question itself….no they shouldn’t give up anything for him. Pitchin is not the problem, and no way in hell should they move any bat for a guy they don’t need.
Not to mention why would they take on a large salary from a pitcher, when they just moved the exact same thing last year????
He definitely is not a prospect of any sort
His trade value is exactly zero. Maybe less.

I'm with you on the salary thing too
I don’t know how that contract is going to help the team win in 2011-2012. It would be quite the anchor.

I think any discussion of a guy like Oswalt
is contingent on the old team paying the majority of the contract.

Which I could see them doing if there was one year remaining
But, it’s pretty rare to see a team subsidizing a traded player’s salary for multiple years.

I'm all for adding Oswalt
but I don’t want to give anyone up. They’ll go for that, right?

So what could we hand over for him?
He demands to be traded, he wants out of there and to be on a championship team, we desperately need an ace. Maybe three prospects or so? None of our biggest ones?

It makes the most sense
They have money coming off the books next year and I could see the Astros floating him on salary this year. Too bad (for the Astros) the Dodgers farm system doesn’t really offer any blue chippers.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
I have zero intrest in trading for Oswalt
why give up any future pieces for more (expensive) pitching? The Padres have a ton of pitching depth in their system right now and little to no position player depth (especially up the middle) if the Padres are going to trade for anything shouldn’t it be a bat?
The run the Padres are on this year is great and I really want to see them go as far as possible this year but do we really want to mortgage this teams future right now? With the pitching and ballpark the Padres currently have this team has a chance to be very good for the next three to four years (if they continue to make the right moves).
I think any move this team makes this season should be for a middle infielder, a CF or possibly a corner OF. The last thing they should be doing is committing future resources to overpriced pitching.
