I'm mad as hell & I can't take it anymore, Channel4sd Padres

I just sent this to Channel4sd PADRES.

RE: Comment about the Channel4sd PADRES Giants at Padres telecast of May 18, 2010.

I have observed increasing disturbing lack of impartiality of all things Padres vs. their opponent occurring during Channel4sd Padres telecasts over this season so far. Channel4sd is less and less about the Padres and more and more MLB overall. The broadcast of May 18 proved this to be true.

I will lead off with some background. I am a Padres fan first, baseball fan second. I have season tickets to the Padres games. I watch the Padres on TV a lot as well. I have put up with Dick Enberg's "Touch Em All" when a player FROM THE OTHER TEAM hits a home run off a Padres pitcher all this season. I HATE IT, but I have tolerated it. I have also put up with his impartiality, misidentifying players, making calls incorrectly, babbling incoherently, etc., ad nauseum. I have a lot of patience.

I have put up with Channel4sd Padres being impartial at times. I dislike it, but have persevered.

On May 18, I had attended the game and was already upset that my Padres had lost. Later, after watching DVR of the Channel4sd PADRES gamecast, I felt compelled to write.

First, the score is 2-2, top 8. Giants are up. Padres’ reliever Mike Adams is pitching. Aaron Rowand at first. No outs. Andres Torres hits a late-inning, game-tying home run off Adams. "TOUCH EM ALL", Enberg shouts. I could not believe it. I could not wrap my mind around hearing Enberg yell that after the Padres’ Adams had just gave up the tying runs in a late-inning tight game. I was out of my mind, screaming at the television.

As you know, our Padres go on to lose the game.

Second, and I KNOW this is a Channel4sd Padres thing, during the Postgame Show, when the opposing team wins, the choices for Player of the Game are all from that team. So, of course, the choices are ALL Giants. Gag, spew, vomit, but there it is. Andres Torres is choice #3.

Thirdly, and this is the I CAN'T BELIEVE IT moment, Channel4sd PADRES, in all its divine brilliance, at the end of the game, sends Mark Neely down to the field to interview the Giants’ Andres Torres. Yes, the same opposing player that hit the TYING HOME RUN off Padres reliever Adams. I lost it.

Finally, to add insult to injury, Andres Torres won Player of the Game. I know Channel4sd Padres had nothing to do with the voting for this.

The broadcast of May 18th had so much Giants adoration in it, I wasn’t sure if I was watching the Padres or the Giants’ telecast. This increased impartiality is annoying at least, distressing at most.

Thank you for your time in advance.

Sincerely, Very Displeased Padres Fan

I just found out from a friend...

that Mark Neely has been interviewing players from BOTH teams on the Postgame Show? I haven’t seen him interview any opposing player this season until May 18.

That makes me more angry. I’m forwarding this to Mentor…

If anyone else is upset with Channel4sd Padres and Dick Enberg, I would encourage you to write as well…

DICK enberg

I was 8 years old at a spring training game , Im 53 now, i was playing catch with my little league friends not too far from the first base line, when DICK and his camera crew came up, DICK yelled " get these F ..ing kids off the F..ing field!". exact quote. I told him your a DICK, Ive hated him ever since. I listened to him brag about his home in la Jolla and how he told the padres “they couldnt afford him” on an interview just a few days ago, hes not as bad to listen too as Sutcliff, was but thats not saying much.

i totally agree with eastbaysd fan. i can’t stand listening to dick enberg. i like him doing football but if i have to hear “touch them all” one more time, i am going to scream. can’t wait till he goes to wimbeldon so we can here mark neeley and mark grant in the booth.

Just a quibble:

Isn’t a “lack of impartiality” what we want?

eastbaysd is right.

I have actually stopped watching the Padres Broadcasts due to the “Dick in a box.” Listening to him spew out endless amounts of adoration towards the opposing team has driven me to the brink. I stand here, not alone, but hand in hand with my fellow Pod fans, staring out over the gulf that resides where once a young Matty V sat, a gulf that has become even more painfully obvious now that Dick is there . Dick has done nothing but remind us what it is that we had when the announcers would praise not the other team, but our own! Yes, I am aware that our offense leaves almost nothing to discuss, but for the sake of all that is holy, do not succumb to the path of least resistance when love is on the line. that might not make much sense; maybe it does, but thats not the point here. The point is, this is a PADRES BROADCAST, FOR PADRE FANS!!!

THIS!!!

When is the Cox contract up? Dick needs to go. Things just are the same since Matty left us.

Dick and Cox are not related

The Padres hired him.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Does Quis still work for channel 4?

I hardly ever watch the Pre-game stuff so I don’t know.

I just want to get paid to draw naked girls, is that so much to ask?

Enberg & Quis

Enberg is Garfinkel’s guy. Are you going to speak out against Garfinkel? Your beloved pitch count board in RF is going to be gone next time you go to Petco :)

Oh yeah Quis found out about Enberg being hired (meaning basically Quis was being let go) by reading it in the paper. I assume that Neely probably found out the same way. It was handled very poorly and it appears that the majority of the fans aren’t happy with Enberg. Plus he’s making over 1 million bucks. Yikes!

Sorry....

I just read the post. Wonk kind of mentioned it above but I don’t think anyone could actually get past the “Dick and Cox” part.

All I know is if you get Beerfest Part 2 taken away from us because of this letter I’m going to be a little upset with you.

I don't really mind.

I put more attention to what is happening on the field than in the booth.

Seriously?

The guy hasn’t done baseball in 20 years, and all y’all expect him to be nearly perfect from day one?

I used to enjoy coming here, especially for the game threads, but all the childish whining going on lately has soured this place for me. I’d rather hang out with dodger fans, or cubs fans.

Until this season started, I didn’t know that lack of respect could be palpable.

However, Dick does not need to get all excited when the opponents hit a meaningful HR.

The only thing I can't stand

is the “touch ’em all” for the other team. I think everything else is fair.

"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"

by Ron Mexico on May 24, 2010 10:34 AM PDT reply actions

I don't mind the phrase

but it needs to be used differently. “That ball is over the fence and the Dodgers take a 2 run lead! Touch em all!” is a lot different than "The ball goes over the head of Gwynn Jr. and now the padres will need to put up a big rally next inning. Looney Tunes will touch them all as Garland will now need to face Andre Ethier. For the folks who don’t know at home, “Andre” is the name of a seal from a childrens movie from the 90s."
