Padres drop game one to the Dodgers 3-4

Today is Luke Gregerson's birthday.  Matt Kemp gave him a really mean spirited present, a two run homer that gave the dreaded Dodgers the lead and the win.  Anthony Gwynn almost pulled the ball back over the wall with a perfectly timed jump that drew leather like... some sort of leather artist.

  • Adrian Gonzalez hit a home run right after Gwynn was caught stealing in the first inning.  It was his first since April 25th.
  • David Eckstein had 3 hits, bless his heart.
  • Will Venable hit an RBI double.
  • Jon Garland looked shaky but worked himself out of a few jams.
  • The Padres lead in the NL West is down to 2.5.
  • Ted Leitner says that Saturday and Sunday are both sold out.

Garland may have got out of jams

But walks can be a silent killer. If Garland allows less guys on base, then Gregerson faces a different set of hitters his inning. Maybe he retires them and Adams or Bell don’t have trouble with Martin and Kemp.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Gregerson has trouble with the Dodgers.

I remember him blowing a couple games against them last year too.

His 4.69 BB/9 is so far out of character with his history. I just don’t get it.

The most annoying guys near me

Weren’t Dodger fans, but were Red Sox fans. They had a friend who had a Dodger hat on and seemed to be rooting for both teams. They were very drunk, spilled lots of beer and dropped lots of F bombs. One of them really wanted to get a “Cut yah hayah” (Cut your hair) chant started when Manny came up.

I'm reminded of something McCovey Chronicles said Wednesday.

Bad offensive club is bad offensively.

When our run prevention apparatus has hiccups, it’s hard for our lineup to make up for it. Hoyer knows this, judging by his recent comments, and it would be nice if he’d do something to fix it.

I'm sure having had mentioned it,

he’s crunching the proverbial numbers as we speak.

One thing I would like to see is Adrian out of the three slot in the line-up. Headley batting behind him isnt really swaying many pitchers to NOT pitch to him. Headley is certainly hitting the ball better this year, but his change of approach has made him more of a singles guy, rather than the power guy he was in the minors. though, one most always consider things… such as… uhm… GO PODS!

I think the idea was that Blanks would be the guy he was last year, not the guy he has been thus far this year. I still have an ounce of faith for him, and it resides in this shot of whiskey I’m about to take.

anyhow, I will reserve final judgment for the finale.

I get that Buddy is into the righty-lefty matchups, but it’s not like Ortiz was a “tough righty”. He’s a below average pitcher who gives up tons of home runs—wouldn’t it have been smart to start a couple guys with good power?

Have to be careful when considering giving up defense.

Our winning is almost entirely based on run prevention. If you want to sacrifice defense for offense, you have to make sure you’re getting back enough offense to make up for the lack of defense.
