The restricted list also can be a transactional last resort for a player with a personal issue. In 2003, baseball instituted the bereavement list, which allows a three- to seven-day excused absence for a player experiencing a family emergency or the death of a loved one. With permission from the Commissioner’s office, the player’s team may replace him on the active 25-man roster, though he continues to be paid and earn service time. But if an absence extends more than seven days, the club must resort to placing the player on the restricted list, where he is not paid and does not earn service time. Casey Kotchman, Cliff Floyd, and Alex Gonzalez (then with Cincinnati) all were placed on the restricted list in recent years after their seven-day bereavement leave had expired.

This a quote from a recent BaseballProspectus article. Someone asked me if Kevin Correia could be put on the disabled list if he needed more than 7 days of bereavement for the death of his father. I had replied that it wouldn’t be likely to happen since you would need a mental or physical issue to justify it. This article showed me that there was precedent for putting bereaved players on the rarely mentioned restricted list. Currently, Milton Bradley in on the restricted list for the Mariners as he resolves his personal issues.

    Major Dodger/Padre differences

this is for the LA Times to look into

    1. We have a great team chemistry. They have a bunch of egos.
    2. We have been very focused on winning games, plain & simple. They seem to care more about individual stats.
    3. We know how to play solid defense and are not in need of another spring training to refresh the fundamentals.
    4. They’ve been killing themselves over very small things. We’ve been killing our opponents by doing very small things (pitcher RBI’s, defense, speed, etc)
    5. LA is all about the benjamins. I don’t see any heart in that team. We’re a 37 mil squad with no expectations and a ton of heart.
    6. Did I mention egos?

first off, its more of a blog entry than anything that should end-up in print. No wonder the LA Times is in its last two years of existence.

I love how it just dismisses the whole lineup b/c the guy who is paid to follow baseball, actually doesn’t follow baseball.

His justifications is the payroll and how Ramirez and Kudora make practically the same amount…..yeah, that is something I wouldn’t be bragging about. Then he refer to pitchers that haven’t thrown a pitch for the doyers in over 40 years.

Wonko, we were talking about LeBlanc's upside on my post before.

Wouldn’t a possible comparison be Jeff Francis? He’s a lefty whose fastball averages 87-88 mph, but has a great change-up. In 2006 and 2007, he was worth 3.6 and 4.1 WAR respectively, despite never having an ERA below 4.16, or a FIP below 4.19.

Is there a reason LeBlanc can’t do that? His K/9 and BB/9 are pretty similar to Francis’s, though his HR/9 looks to be a bit higher.

I can see how you could come to that conclusion numbers-wise

But from a scouting perspective, you’re talking about a world of difference between the two.

    Can you explain it?

At the time, you said to be a 4 WAR pitcher, you have to pitch 200+ innings of mid-low 3.00s ERA. But there’s Francis with a 4.16 and a 4.22 ERA. How does that work?

    Actually

you said to be a 3 WAR pitcher you have to have 200+ innings of mid-3s ERA. So how does Francis get 4 WAR with an ERA of over 4.00?

    I only gave that example

Because I found a couple of pitchers in the 3 WAR range and that’s the type of line they had.

No, I didn't say that (or maybe I did but that's not what I meant)

I gave that as an example of that type of pitcher. There are a number of other combinations.

In Francis’ case, park adjustments are obviously the first factor since he plays half his games at the worst pitcher’s park in baseball.

Ok, so what makes Francis better than LeBlanc?

I don’t get to watch many games so I can’t see what you see.

    I'm not a scout

But I’ve read what they say and Francis was always a better prospect.

All right, so if that's the case

don’t we have to wait and see what LeBlanc actually does? His stuff seems similar to Francis. Looking at the run values of their pitches, they each have great change-ups, and average to below average other pitches.

Again, like you I’m not a scout, so maybe they can look at Francis and say he’s just better, but it seems to me like we should wait and see what LeBlanc is actually capable of.

    I never said we shouldn't

What I would say is that given all the information, the likely scenario is that Francis (injury aside) is likely to be the better of the two pitchers. However, things that are likely don’t always occur.

Some other stuff to chew on

On Minorleaguesplits they let you run the Major League Equivalencies (MLE) on what a pitcher did. If you take both LeBlanc’s AAA season his MLE FIP is about 5. So that would be quite a jump to start saying he’s now a <4 FIP pitcher. Not impossible, just unlikely.

Also, Francis established himself as a major leaguer around 23/24 and LeBlanc is doing so at age 26. That has to count for something if you’re looking at development curves.

    According to Fangraphs

WAR for two pitchers with the same run environment and same replacement level is all FIP plus park factors. So I guess that’s really all the explanation there is.

by Wonko on May 14, 2010 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions

    Which means

That I exaggerated my point a little, because ERA isn’t actually a factor. You could have an ERA in the 5s and if your FIP is in the high 3s and you got over 200 IP in a fairly neutral park (like Randy Wolf in 2009) then your WAR should be 3.

    I mean

Wolf’s FIP was in the high 3s, his ERA was not in the 5s.

    Yeah.

So LeBlanc pitches 200 innings in PETCO with a FIP in the high 3.00s, he gets 2-3 WAR.

And that's how Kevin Correia and Chad Billingsley

can have almost identical innings and FIP, yet Chad gets 3.1 WAR and Kevin only gets 2.4 WAR.

Some good comments on that LA Times article.

    I particularly liked this one:

Wow… I wouldn’t expect less coming from the mouth of someone at the Los Angeles Times. I’m not a Padres fan, but I’m glad to see that they are at least showing they know how to play baseball. I think it’s more embarrassing that two of our players equal to the whole payroll of the Padres and we’re performing much worse. We’ll see what happens this next week, but I’m sure that its not going to be nearly as easy as you’re making it out to be. You don’t take baseball for what it is.
