Padres beat the Giants! Must Win Game record: 1.000

I'm a little weirded out that people don't recognize Must Win Games when they come along. If we don't have to win these games in May, then why are we playing them? Eff these games then, right?

In any case, I'm glad the Padres have decided that they're just gonna keep on keepin' on because the Dodgers are making their move and it's better to be going into this weekend series with a head of steam as opposed to underwears full of poop.

GO PADRES!!

I dunno.

some interesting stats:

padres win two games to open the three game series with Giants, I just happen to be there for both games… coincidence? Perhaps.

awesome game. The padres seemed to be in control of this one from start to finish. The body language of the Padres players is that of a team that expects to win. Pretty awesome.

go PODS!!

Dodgers seem to be hitting their stride.

Gonna be a barn-burner this weekend. That series is every bit as crucial as the one we’re playing right now.

This team has swagga

We’ve seen how good (and how bad) each of these playerz can be.
Can they step up one at a time and pull it together in Octomber
to really kick ass? How the hell do I know?

I really am impressed

With the way we’ve been playing. Solid pitching rotation (without our Ace), a lights-out bullpen, timely hitting, and stellar defense = making the “critics” eat their own words.

As long as this team holds together and continues to win, we’ll be a force to be reconed with in the N.L.

Go Padres!!!

I'm far too lazy to do the research on it

but I’m sure we must lead baseball in wins in which we’ve been outhit.

You gotta love McCovey Chronicles. Those guys are hilarious.

Bad offensive team is bad offensively. A few random hot streaks in April and May aren’t going to change that. Remember the one guy we acquired who kind of, if you squinted, seemed like he could help the offense in the short-term? His wrist is filled with tapioca pudding, and those little nubby tapioca parts are all rubbing against the bone. Aubrey Huff seems like he could be a little better than Travis Ishikawa. That’s worth, like, seventeen wins. Bang up job, front office.

The Padres are the speed and defense team that the Giants want to be, but they actually have players who can run from first to third without a break for buffalo wings at second.

McCovey guys

are a pretty funny group. If situations we different, we probably could be friends in some parell universe. But in our current predicament we are sworn to battle to the death…(unless they are playing the Doyers).

So I was browsing through Baseball Prospectus's Playoff Odds calculator

available here. I know it’s May, but I’m going to enjoy this while I can dammit.

Anyway, the link there takes you to playoff odds based only on actual performance. As you can see, the Padres are doing quite nicely—41.5% chance to win the division, and 60% chance overall to make the playoffs. The odds have been similar to that for a while.

They also have another version of their odds which take into account their PECOTA pre-season projections, available here. Despite our actual performance, PECOTA still had us projected as a last-place team for quite some time. However, because they’ve continued to play so well for so long, even the PECOTA-based odds have us now as the second-most likely team in the division to make the playoffs.

That’s progress.

Ouch

Dodgers have a 7.5% chance of making the playoffs right now.

I always make myself remember an important caveat.

Last year at one point, the Broncos had about a 95% chance at making the playoffs.

Check that.

They had a 99.84% chance of making it after week 6.

Why do I read Gaslamp Ball?

Where else can you find writing like this?

BTW, the only reason the Dodgers SEEM to be on a roll is they just took 3-straight from Arizona and their amazing bullpen.
