Padres win a Must Win Game. Stay in control of first place

You know what I love about this season? It's eleven days into May and I'm hanging on the edge of my seat.

You know what I hate about this particular game? So many Padres baserunners not finding their way home, lost in the safe purgatory of first, second and third base as the final out is recorded elsewhere.

The Padres get another victory over Zito. David Eckstein continues to be clutchy. LeBlanc is bummed that he can't be the pitcher of note for the Padres. Heath Bell continues to make things too exciting.

Tomorrow is another Must Win Game. Better to collect them now than to need 5 in a row at the end of the year!

GO PADRES!!!

P.S. Chase doesn't deserve top photo billing.

man that game was exhausting

but it was a damn good thing we won. losing Correia, giving a game away, losing Stauffer and then dropping another one due to the unclutchiest hitting ever would be a bad bad stretch.

My favorite part was reading the before and after blogs on the Giant's blog

Series Preview: Gah, the Padres are so boring. I can’t get myself to really hate them, can we play them less please? (Hard to hate a team that hates LA nearly as much as we do!)

Postgame comments: HATE HATE HATE THE PADRES. SO. MUCH.

Granted, not by the same guy, so it’s not exactly a contradiction. But these kinds of emotional shifts are highly amusing.

I think you cherrypicked your comments in the post game thread

The overall feeling was Lord that was the most boring game of the year! I didn’t read the threads before the game.

they're gutless

People who say these early battles for first place aren’t must win games are just gutless, they’re afraid if we lose it’ll look like we can’t hang with the big boys. This is a must win series, we can’t let the Giants hang around thinking they belong in first place.

just got back from the game.

I forgot how weird it is to be one of only a handful of padres fans at a sporting event. In any event, the padres really seemed to be in control of the game for all but 8 innings, and for all but eight of those innings I felt like I was in cruise control, watching as the pasture drifts on by.

Blanks got on base 3 times, but, he struck out the other two times… I guess you can call that progress.

he also scored the deciding run

and given the way they swung the bats, he probably doesn’t score in that inning if he’s standing at first on Torrealba’s single.

by abara on May 12, 2010 12:02 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm just glad that he showed a bit of patience.

I’m sure its frustrating as a hitter when the pitchers aren’t giving you anything to hit. Now he just has to lay off that soft stuff away, if he does he just might start seeing a few more balls in the strike zone.

Patience is not Kyle's problem.

He brought an 11.9% walk rate into the game tonight. The problem is the big SOB can’t make contact—his 63.4% contact rate is one of the worst in baseball.

by Ron Mexico on May 12, 2010 7:32 AM PDT up reply actions

You do have a point, as far as those stats go.

I guess what I interpret as patience others interpret as not making contact. I guess I should change the noun.

Here you go Zach: If he could show enough restraint to lay off the low and away breaking stuff with any consistency, he just might start getting some pitches to hit out over the plate.

It just baffles me how he can go up there, swing at the same pitches that he’s been swinging at for the last 80 ab’s, or so, and expect a change in the end result. Then, just when the shats about to hit the fan, he gets a few more AB’s and gets a few base on balls, seeming to have completely changed his approach at the plate.

wait...

correction.

I guess what I interpret as “not showing patience” others interpret as “not making contact at balls he should not be swinging at.” If he could lay off those pitches, I might just call that patience. however, I may be wrong.

(sorry, didnt have my cup of coffee before I posted)

The guy has a bat

No one doubts that. These are growing pains. I’m not going to pretend I know what would fix it, but I do know that when you’re having trouble hitting an off speed pitch they become even harder to hit with each at bat. Then you start pressing to hit those hooks and fastballs feel like they’re coming in faster than before…Can’t catch up.

The only thing I see helping him hit is 1. face inferior pitching or 2. Wait it out until he gets lucky and mashes a couple 500 feet. With time it will happen and that should turn his whole attitude around.

=SD=

by Mad_Villain on May 12, 2010 8:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, let's take a look.

Kyle is swinging at 26.8% of pitches outside the strike zone, and the league average is 27.2%. So he could definitely stand to swing less at pitches outside the zone, but he’s just just hacking away. He’s about average in that category. He swings at 64.2% of pitches in the zone, which again is just about average (63.3%). He’s clearly not bad at pitch recognition or plate discipline, though, otherwise we wouldn’t be walking 12% of the time.

The problem, though, is that when he does choose to swing at a pitch, he only makes contact with it 63.4% of the time, which is the worst in baseball. If we break it down, he’s connecting with only 32.8% of pitches outside the zone he swings at (league average of 65%), and 78.7% of pitches inside the zone (league average of 88.1%).

So you do have a point. He clearly doesn’t have the contact skills to get to many pitches outside the strike zone. What he needs to do then is work on either improving his contact skills, or swinging even less at those pitches.

Blame Adrian

Channel 4 showed Adrian with his arm around Blanks, really giving him a talking to after the second strike out. He gave him a shot of veteran leadership and you could see the difference in his next at bat.

I was also at the game. That was long. And I started to wonder what the MLB record for team and collective LOB was. And I was just praying we did not cough this one up as well. Yes would have sucked for the Padres, but it would really have sucked giving the dudes around me some serious ammo.

What was Yorvit doing swinging at the first pitch from a guy who could not find the strike zone with the bases loaded? And when will the real AGon come back. I don’t like this imposter.

Agreed on Agon.

He did the same thing, swinging on the first pitch. He needs to clear his head. It’s as if the lack of trade talk is affecting him more than the trade talk did.

Amazing

There aren’t enough superlatives for how well this team has pitched against all expectations. I just don’t know how long this can hold up. I’m staying positive, but the offense is bad and there isn’t any real help in sight.

maybe the opposing pitcher is erratic and young

and your pitcher is AB and he sacrifices a guy on second over to third so that the young pitcher gets really nerves. Playing for the wild pitch!

My Favorite Bochy Move

1 run game, Nevin gets on 1st with 1 out. He pinch runs for him with some scrub that isn’t a base stealer, but a little faster..think Ramon Vasquez. Then he pinch hits for the number 5 hitter (lets say its our CF like Payton) with someone like Teremel Sledge…so he can sacrfice him over to 2nd. Then he puts sledge in LF taking Klesko out, and Vasquez at 1b, then, he finds some scrub to play CF since he is out….and it was the 6th inning.
