    I can't explain the ratings

But, our attendance figures last year were kind of fluky. We started the season with a 4 game series against the Dodgers. That series had 2 weekday games that had 30,000 and 29,000. The highest non-Dodger weekday game attendance total we had all season last year was 22,000 (June 1 vs Phi). By comparison, if I take the avg weekday attendance to date for the seasons and remove the Dodgers series and the 2010 opening series for the Braves (since it included a sellout and pretty high opening night total of 24,000) then the Padres have seen about 300 (~16,300 vs ~16,000) more fans on average for weekday games.

We also had had an early sellout vs. the Pirates on a Saturday in 2009. I don’t know what happened there. It wasn’t even a Peavy start (Shawn Hill). I think there was a shirt giveaway or something. Whatever the reason, that one game changes the attendance numbers. If I remove that game then the Padres are less than 1,000 fans on average behind the 2009 pace.

I definitely think the Dodgers series is a serious problem for comparing the two seasons to date. I can’t really explain that one Pirates game though. Is it a fluke or a sign that the fans supported the 2009 team better?

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

This weekend should have huge attendance numbers

Saturday is already a sell out and if we have a good series against the Giants, I can see Friday being packed and Sunday having an above average crowd as well.

I’m curious to see what the percentage of Padres Dodgers fans is this weekend. Hopefully we have em outnumbered.

    Random question

but how long can you have a player on the bereavement list? I’m just trying to think back to when Delmon Young’s mom died, and it seemed like he wasn’t gone for very long, and I can’t remember if that was because of the list, or if he was just ready to come back.

by Jordan_Ming on May 11, 2010 12:08 PM PDT reply actions

The bereavement list may be used when a player finds it necessary to leave the team to attend to a serious illness or death in his (or his spouse’s) immediate family. A player placed on the bereavement list must miss a minimum of three games and a maximum of seven games. The team can use another player from its 40-man roster to replace a player on the bereavement list.

by Jordan_Ming on May 11, 2010 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions

    Well

I think you would require some sort of psychiatric evaluation for that. I know last year Votto was put on the DL for depression related issues following the death of his dad. But, you basically need a physical or mental issue to consider someone disabled.

Given the competitive nature of many athletes though, I assume that getting back into the daily grind of work would be good therapy to get their mind off of the issue. I assume some wouldn’t be wired that way, but I suspect most are.

Are you sure you are not talking about the old school way

Because what you are describing sounds like what I went through.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

    mine was two years ago

it was an emergency and Scripps La Jolla. So I am not sure if it was old school or new school, but my incision was only about 1.5 inces or so plus a a small hole for a camera.

    I'm just guessing

but I think emergency operations have to be bigger cuz there’s cleaning to be done.

    After reading a little

I’m pretty sure there isn’t such a thing as a non-emergency appendectomy. Obviously, if the thing bursts its more of an emergency. But, it’s not like anyone schedules an appointment to have their appendix removed.

    Hmm

Do we know if his burst or not, then? I took emergency to mean that it had.

    Both

Hart and Harang’s were referred to as emergency appendectomies and I don’t believe either burst.

that sounds like a typical SD person to me...

we don’t need tix, just walk up and buy them the day of…

I prefer to schedule my essential surgery so that I don’t have to rush and feel stressed out about the whole situation.

    That sounds laproscopic

But according to what I’m reading they release you from the hospital within 24 hours. I had a coworker that came back to work with a couple of days.

Mine was an open procedure and the scar is the size of my index finger.

    That might be the case
In most cases, patients (who undergo the laparoscopic procedure) can be discharged within 24 to 36 hours. By contrast, the hospital stay is typically two to five days for an open procedure.

The camera implies that yours wasn’t an open procedure, but yet your recovery time lines with it.

We basically need a pitcher for Saturday at the soonest

I think it’s reasonable to expect Correia to be back by then. Also, I would expect Ramos to get recalled with Stauffer going on the DL.

    It makes the most sense

He’s on the 40 man roster. He can go to relief if Correia can go on Saturday or he could start in place of KC. He’s schedule to start today. I don’t know if that affects the situation at all, but obviously Portland will have to scramble tonight.

    For some reason

They are suggesting that he competes for a job with Headley since Savior’s numbers will come back to Earth. There’s a few too many assumptions in there for my tastes.

Now, if you could convert Gordon to 2B, then you might peak my interest.
