How long of leash does Tony Gwynn Jr. get?

We obviously know who his daddy is, but does that make it more difficult to send him down to Triple-A?  His daddy hasn't exactly sent SDSU to new plateaus even with all his recruits and an unreal prospect like Steven Strasburg but the field is named after him.

Junior is hitting under the mendoza line .200 with no power and was so completely ineffective in the leadoff spot that other people had to step in.  I thought it was going to at least be a platoon with Hairston but Gwynn is hitting .171 versus right handed pitching.   Is his defense, really that good?  Is he the second coming of Ruben Rivera? I shudder at the thought.  I thought Aaron Cunningham looked terrific and was near leading the team in steals during the summer.  Cunningham has always raked and has power.  Aaron-cunningham-400x253_medium

Doesn't he warrant a shot?  Luis Durango has that silly speed and Chris Denorfia is hitting .300 and playing good defense at Portland. Gwynn might be out of options but I don't think he would be that big of commodity to be claimed off of waivers, he seems to have shuffled back and forth for the Brewers all the time.

He's not his dad, but he walks and showed some power a few days ago.

His defense is a big plus over any of our other options. Gwynn’s current OBP is higher than Cunningham’s OBP in AAA.

he's been coming around the last week

we need to give him a little more time, then we’ll know what we’re gettin’ from him.

His OBP

Is fine… he is our leadoff hitter now!

Cunningham was near leading what team in what summer?

It’s hard to follow your statements because your supporting facts are completely unrelated.

Doesn’t matter – there are no better replacements for CF.

What about Durango?

Guy has the wheels and the arm to play CF?
And if not what about moving Venable to CF?

Maybe the wheels but not the glove

And hits about the same with what looks like a lower OBP.

And Durango wouldn’t play every day like he still needs, he’d be the new platoon guy with Shrek. Is that what you want?

In the minors

Venable was a really bad defensive CF

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Lookie who crossed the Mendoza line?

It’s the start of the season, these stats change fast. A few decent games and he’s now up to .233. He got on base every time today (2 hits, 2 walks) and made the kind of moves you want a leadoff player to make (2 stolen bases). Doesn’t help as much when the pitcher is next up.

Maybe he’ll work out and maybe he won’t, but it seems imprudent to flush a talent like that down the drain after a short start.

I think they handled the situation about right

He was struggling a lot. So, they benched him for about a week. But since then, he has been quite productive. He’s raised his average about .100 pts, and his OBP by .125 pts.

He is probably our best leadoff option at this point in time.
Ideally, Gwynn followed by Eck is probably our best 1-2 for the time being. This contrasts sharply with the first week or so of play where neither of them was hitting.

you had me

Eck is playing well right now

He is batting better than most of our players… period.
I would rather have a an Antonelli or someone there, but… for the time being, he is doing well.

No, he's not.

He’s the worst of any regular except Cabrera.

let me slightly rephrase

Who would you rather have batting second?
The only person I might consider is Venable, and I would rather have him after Headley and Adrian.

by Zen Blade on Apr 28, 2010 9:24 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd rather have Headley second, actually.

Put Eck in the 8-hole.

I'd rather have Gwynn 1st

But if you put Gwynn 2nd, who do you put 1st?
Cabrera IS NOT a leadoff hitter. He almost never walks, and he doesn’t take enough pitches.

Headley 2nd would be okay, if we had someone else to protect Adrian, but currently we don’t.

by Zen Blade on Apr 28, 2010 1:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Protection doesn't really bother me

because I don’t think it exists.

Gwynn's defense makes him the best option in centerfield.

Don’t hold his average against him. His .257 BABIP is more responsible for his low average than anything else.
