I'm really tired
of non-local sports writers bemoaning how cheap and horrible the Padres ownership is if they don’t re-sign Adrian. Heck, I’m tired of local sports writers doing it too. You guys want to fork over the $20m/year it will take? Please, by all means. Until then, stfu.

Which one is it?
“you guys want to fork over the $20m/year it will take?……Until then, stfu”
OR
“They can say whatever I want they want.”
I don't really mean they have to shut up and not say anything.
I reacted emotionally to an opinion I perceived as stupid.

Its not about Criticism
Its about talking about things writers don’t know a damn thing about. We have been in competition for the the division title for 3/5 years and won it twice. We resigned Peavy to a contract predicated on the fact that we would go deep into the playoffs, but we failed.
If the Padres are winning, the FO will resign Adrian, because winning puts asses in the seats and will allow them to afford a good contract.
If the FO is smart, we will keep Adrian for the length of the contract, the allow him to enter FA and try to compete with FA… if he goes for 20 million a year… only like 4 teams will be able to afford him, and we will get a Type A compensation + a sandwich pick… I think.
Let the new scouts use there wits and draft us a college player that will impact the team in 2 years.
If we compete while we have Gonzo I think we could afford hit at like 15 million a year if we have a payroll of 70-80 million.
"This team looks dangerous, like a convict with a temper, nothing to lose and a switch blade." -jbox
Gonzo's Agent stated
they are looking in the 20-25Million a year range for 6 years.
If this is accurate, and not just a chess match, then the Padres SHOULD trade Agon.

"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
Plus
What teams can realistically afford 20-25 mill a year? Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Angles? Maybe? I think Tex just got lucky… I don’t think the current market will support that again, nor are the big teams looking for 1B.

Area taxpayers who paid for Petco Park are stuck with a last-place team with little prospect for improvement soon.
What qualifies us as a last-place team? We didn’t finish in last last season. We aren’t in last place now. We haven’t been a “last place team” since 2008. WTF is this guy’s problem?
Also… “little prospect for improvement soon”? I don’t think there’s anyone who knows anything about baseball who wouldn’t agree that we’re on the upswing. We’ve got a roster full of young promising plays.
Eff that guy.

we are last place
if you consider Payroll. See if you spend as much as the Astros, D-Backs, Mets, White-Sox last year and you suck it is bad luck. But at least you give it a try…and fans still show up even though you suck. Just look at their attendance records..
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
The Mets, White Sox and (to a lesser extent) Astros
are in mega-urban centers with huge fan-bases, so they have a lot more resources to draw on to pay the bills and fill seats.
As for the D-Backs, I’m nos sure what sort of financial situation their ownership is in. They were in the middle of the pack on Opening Day 2009 with about $70m in payroll. They’re also the only baseball team in the state; they don’t have to compete with big market teams like the Angels and Dodgers for fans.
I’m not sure if I have a point. I think I’m just trying to point out the Padres are in a different situation than the teams you mentioned.

you missed it
Those places spent a lot of money and lose, and the fans don’t show up just because of high payroll.
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
The White Sox won the WS in 2005
This past decade, they have had 4 seasons where they won 90 games or more.
They won 80 or more games in 8 of the last 10.
I am not sure of your definition of losing.
White Sox
is that they have consistently spent, but the fans only show up when they have good seasons. Attendance is proportional to the W’s and the $. Same with the Astros.
I would say the same about the Mets, but they don’t win.

And that statement doesn’t seem to be referring to payroll… it seems to be referring to performance.
And it you take payroll into account… wouldn’t we be considered one of the most efficient teams in the majors? We probably have the best wins/payroll ratio in the league.

the lowest payroll teams
almost always have the best wins/payroll ratio.
Even a team with every player making the major league minimum will probably win 50 games. It cost a lot, lot more to win those next 50 games.

I don't know how much this has been mentioned in San Diego,
but there is a backlash developing against teams such as the Royals, Padres, Pirates etc.
Padres spend the smallest percentage of their revenues on payroll.
Pirates, Royals, Padres have dreadful drafting track records for the last decade, yet they ignore this and blame the larger markets.
They have received millions of dollars from the luxury tax that they have not put back into the team. The KC owner has pocketed all luxury tax and revenue sharing money.
I never heard much about this before, and I don’t know if the UT has covered it. I won’t say it has become a big issue, but it is something that I have heard or read numerous times this season.
I think there is going to be a lot of this kind of talk this year. The teams that claim they can’t compete financially are coming under much more scrutiny.
“It’s not true as it relates to the Padres and frankly if anybody challenges it that it will be very simple to defend because the facts speak for themselves.”
Well of course he is going to say that.
That doesn’t mean it is true.
He is not going to go on a talk radio show and say that he is using the luxury tax and revenue sharing for other things.
They get about $13m in revenue sharing
That’s hardly enough to pocket and use for other things. via here
So I’d say the facts do speak for themselves in what limited opportunity there has been.
Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? ◔ヮ◔
Uncommon Sportsman :: Absurdity in play
I am playing devils advocate here
but I think their response would be that the Padres cut their payroll in half,
while they gave them $13 million dollars.
I'd like to know exactly how much the Padres got from the luxury tax.
And just because they got $13m in revenue sharing doesn’t mean they can turn around and spend that on player payroll. Again, the Padres have lots of other expenses.

As for wanting to know how much the Padres get from luxury tax and revenue sharing,….I don’t think Moorad is ever going to reveal that.

Point is
you can’t say “they got $13m in revenue sharing, how dare they lower payroll!” when you don’t know what all their expenses are.

Just look at the fact
that ownership is signing top draft picks and paying out. There’s $13m-worth of team investment for you that otherwise wasn’t there.
For the Padres to be in the discussion with the Pirates and Royals ownerships, Peavy would never have been signed long-term and Adrian would already be gone.
Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? ◔ヮ◔
Uncommon Sportsman :: Absurdity in play
It's too early to blame the new ownership group for pocketing the luxury tax and revenue sharing money.
Last time I checked they just recently purchased their controlling interest of the team.
Give Hoyer and Morrad some time, last years draft was probably the best draft in decades and they signed all of their top picks which is something that killed this organization during the Moores era.
If the Padres still have a payroll of $40 mil in two or three years and they have traded away their best young players coming up for arbitration then we can complain but let them screw us first before we jump to conclusions.
No one is jumping to conclusions.
I am just telling you that a backlash has developed somewhat and teams with small payrolls are facing much more scrutiny.
Don’t shoot the messenger!
Well obviously you are
giving them the benefit of the doubt more than others will.
It is sort of a twisted logic to say we have to believe whatever Moorad says because he won’t tell us the whole story.
Some might be inclined to be very suspicious of that.
Not saying we have to believe whatever Moorad says.
But you shouldn’t go crying foul over stuff when we don’t know exactly what the situation is. What we DO know is that Padre income has plummeted, revenue-sharing and luxury tax notwithstanding.

see that they’ve signed top draft picks instead of cheaping out and haven’t offloaded talent as quickly as it springs up, what Moorad says is congruent with reality.

I never said
“how dare they lower payroll”
You are making things up!
Of course the Padres aren't the only team with stadium debt
but other teams, like the ones you mentioned, are in a much better place to deal with it. They have more resources to being with, plus much bigger fanbases who still come to games.
You’ll notice that before 2008, the Padres were winning, drawing ~3million in attendance, and were able to afford a payroll of around $70 million.
Then the team turned to crap, attendance plummeted, and Moores got divorced. Income dropped substantially, so they had to cut expenses to deal with it. That’s the way it goes. Give it a few years for them to build the team back up, and attendance and increased payroll will come with it.

no luxury tax
Yankees don’t pay the luxury tax anymore because the “finance” their stadium. Even though the tax payers are paying for the Yankees hotel.
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
Yeah, they are able to deduct
their payments for the stadium.
But they still payed a lot during the last decade to teams that have been cutting their payroll.
Personally I've never heard the Padres ownership (current, at least) blame big market teams
for why they can’t compete.
As for spending the smallest percentage on payroll, I think it’s important to remember that teams have expenses that go beyond just player personnel. For example, I know the Padres spend a ton of their income to service the debt owed on PETCO.

I think it was the Brewers who made the comment
and Randy Levine of the Yankees FO responded by asking them what did they do with the 18 million they gave them.
The Padres are in a rebuilding phase, which automatically results in lower payroll.
Would there be less backlash if they spent $20M on free agent bench players, or benched their young players in favor of aging expensive veterans. They tried the aging expensive veteran route in 2004-2008 and everyone hated it.
I agree with that 100%
A rebuilding phase with lots of young players will naturally create a lower payroll
The backlash is against spending too much money on outside veterans
Most fans want to see the money committed to players they feel they developed themselves….

San Diego's uniqueness goes far beyond the size of its metro area.
You have to consider to the North are all the smelly dodger fans, to the East is desert/mountains, to the South is Mexico and its love of soccer, and to the West is Sea World. We’re isolated here while most other teams are pulling fans in from all the little bumfuck towns that surround them. Add in the fact that the Military is the largest single employer in SD and that a lot of people raised in SD leave to go to school or find jobs so then can eventually afford to live in SD.

But it sounds like the Dodgers writer is being arrogant and has the “SD is LA’s little brother” attitude. Well, I’m pretty sure the Padres have the same record as the Dodgers this year and I’m pretty sure we’ve been to the World Series more recently then them. I think Dodger fans forget that their heyday was a long time ago and except for losing in the NLCS the past two years, they have done jack in a couple of decades.

Actually
We play the Giants starting today. I’m pretty sure the Dodger fans are rooting for us for the next 3 days.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Forbes article about the Pads and full article here. The revenue will jump with the new TV contract in 2012 and if the team wins a few games. The Padres could sign a 20 mil player if they want to – but is that a good business baseball decision?

There should be disclosure
That even the best analysts outside the Padres organization consider that Forbes data to be questionable at best. Take it with a grain of salt.

plus
the way they count TV revenue is suspect. Like the Yankees don’t make much off the YES network, as its own by a different company. But the Padres, while only making about $700K in profit for the TV deal, is responsible for a good portion of the production costs.
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"

I know it's about TMA or DMA, however
as said above – it is more about how you set up the deal. The Padres could have set up their own network if they are responsible for the production costs and gotten all the revenue. Plus, since they are only on Cox – that cuts the market in half (my guess) without local satellite revenue and other new media revenues. It also has to do with demographics, avg income, corporate sponsorship (huge for STL) and such. When you figure that all in, San Diego should be in the top 50% for team income.
