    Its not about Criticism

Its about talking about things writers don’t know a damn thing about. We have been in competition for the the division title for 3/5 years and won it twice. We resigned Peavy to a contract predicated on the fact that we would go deep into the playoffs, but we failed.

If the Padres are winning, the FO will resign Adrian, because winning puts asses in the seats and will allow them to afford a good contract.

If the FO is smart, we will keep Adrian for the length of the contract, the allow him to enter FA and try to compete with FA… if he goes for 20 million a year… only like 4 teams will be able to afford him, and we will get a Type A compensation + a sandwich pick… I think.

Let the new scouts use there wits and draft us a college player that will impact the team in 2 years.

If we compete while we have Gonzo I think we could afford hit at like 15 million a year if we have a payroll of 70-80 million.

Area taxpayers who paid for Petco Park are stuck with a last-place team with little prospect for improvement soon.

What qualifies us as a last-place team? We didn’t finish in last last season. We aren’t in last place now. We haven’t been a “last place team” since 2008. WTF is this guy’s problem?

Also… “little prospect for improvement soon”? I don’t think there’s anyone who knows anything about baseball who wouldn’t agree that we’re on the upswing. We’ve got a roster full of young promising plays.

The Mets, White Sox and (to a lesser extent) Astros

are in mega-urban centers with huge fan-bases, so they have a lot more resources to draw on to pay the bills and fill seats.

As for the D-Backs, I’m nos sure what sort of financial situation their ownership is in. They were in the middle of the pack on Opening Day 2009 with about $70m in payroll. They’re also the only baseball team in the state; they don’t have to compete with big market teams like the Angels and Dodgers for fans.

I’m not sure if I have a point. I think I’m just trying to point out the Padres are in a different situation than the teams you mentioned.

I don't know how much this has been mentioned in San Diego,

but there is a backlash developing against teams such as the Royals, Padres, Pirates etc.

Padres spend the smallest percentage of their revenues on payroll.
Pirates, Royals, Padres have dreadful drafting track records for the last decade, yet they ignore this and blame the larger markets.
They have received millions of dollars from the luxury tax that they have not put back into the team. The KC owner has pocketed all luxury tax and revenue sharing money.

I never heard much about this before, and I don’t know if the UT has covered it. I won’t say it has become a big issue, but it is something that I have heard or read numerous times this season.
I think there is going to be a lot of this kind of talk this year. The teams that claim they can’t compete financially are coming under much more scrutiny.

It's too early to blame the new ownership group for pocketing the luxury tax and revenue sharing money.

Last time I checked they just recently purchased their controlling interest of the team.

Give Hoyer and Morrad some time, last years draft was probably the best draft in decades and they signed all of their top picks which is something that killed this organization during the Moores era.

If the Padres still have a payroll of $40 mil in two or three years and they have traded away their best young players coming up for arbitration then we can complain but let them screw us first before we jump to conclusions.

Of course the Padres aren't the only team with stadium debt

but other teams, like the ones you mentioned, are in a much better place to deal with it. They have more resources to being with, plus much bigger fanbases who still come to games.

You’ll notice that before 2008, the Padres were winning, drawing ~3million in attendance, and were able to afford a payroll of around $70 million.

Then the team turned to crap, attendance plummeted, and Moores got divorced. Income dropped substantially, so they had to cut expenses to deal with it. That’s the way it goes. Give it a few years for them to build the team back up, and attendance and increased payroll will come with it.

The Padres are in a rebuilding phase, which automatically results in lower payroll.

Would there be less backlash if they spent $20M on free agent bench players, or benched their young players in favor of aging expensive veterans. They tried the aging expensive veteran route in 2004-2008 and everyone hated it.

    Personally

I think fans wouldn’t care who the money was spent on so long as they played well and the Padres won games.

    Well yeah, winning cures all.

But this year, I would’ve rather seen them commit 20m/yr to Adrian before they game 5m/yr to say, Jermain Dye.

I enjoy the idea of prospects and building for the future. However, most people aren’t going to PETCO today because in 3 years Tate might be playing center.

Obviously doesn’t know what being a baseball fan is all about, and has not heard Moorad’s comments on payroll. The FO believes in these players and will increase payroll to afford their arbitration years, and when appropriate, sign them to FA multiyear contracts.

The Padres have only sucked in 08… Last year they showed promise and were not last… 05, 06, 07… we were competing for the Division title. How the crap to people get off saying that we are a shitty franchise?

San Diego's uniqueness goes far beyond the size of its metro area.

You have to consider to the North are all the smelly dodger fans, to the East is desert/mountains, to the South is Mexico and its love of soccer, and to the West is Sea World. We’re isolated here while most other teams are pulling fans in from all the little bumfuck towns that surround them. Add in the fact that the Military is the largest single employer in SD and that a lot of people raised in SD leave to go to school or find jobs so then can eventually afford to live in SD.

just yesterday it was announced at Friarhood

a popular local Padres blog, that Tony Gwynn Jr. was, based on a vote the most popular Padre. Lat year, during the little league WS, almost 1/2 of the kids on the local team that went to Williamsport, said that Tony Gwynn Jr. was thier favorite Padre

    I'm not discounting that

just your original source. He’s definitely one of the most popular players, and since he’s done nothing so far, it has to be in name alone.

On lunch break and don't have time to read the article now

But it sounds like the Dodgers writer is being arrogant and has the “SD is LA’s little brother” attitude. Well, I’m pretty sure the Padres have the same record as the Dodgers this year and I’m pretty sure we’ve been to the World Series more recently then them. I think Dodger fans forget that their heyday was a long time ago and except for losing in the NLCS the past two years, they have done jack in a couple of decades.

Padres are also 5th in Operating Income.

Forbes article about the Pads and full article here. The revenue will jump with the new TV contract in 2012 and if the team wins a few games. The Padres could sign a 20 mil player if they want to – but is that a good business baseball decision?

    plus

the way they count TV revenue is suspect. Like the Yankees don’t make much off the YES network, as its own by a different company. But the Padres, while only making about $700K in profit for the TV deal, is responsible for a good portion of the production costs.

by Ron Mexico on Apr 19, 2010 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I know it's about TMA or DMA, however

as said above – it is more about how you set up the deal. The Padres could have set up their own network if they are responsible for the production costs and gotten all the revenue. Plus, since they are only on Cox – that cuts the market in half (my guess) without local satellite revenue and other new media revenues. It also has to do with demographics, avg income, corporate sponsorship (huge for STL) and such. When you figure that all in, San Diego should be in the top 50% for team income.
