Padres beat Rockies 5-4 in 14. Hoyer just as good at maintaining a bullpen

There was one thing I was worried about with Jed Hoyer taking over for Kevin Towers: Would this little kid be able to put together a man's bullpen?

Sure enough. After Towers left and the bullpen went with him, Hoyer was forced to put a bullpen together and it appears he did that.

The bullpen held the Rockies to 8 scoreless innings, which is 8/9ths of a complete game. Mat Latos didn't look bad in his first start, but when 3 of the 6 hits you give up are home runs, well...

Dick and Mud made a point last night that the Padres hitters seem really aggressive thus far. Swinging at balls out of the strike zone. Swinging at balls that bounce the plate. Swinging at bags of peanuts thrown in the stands. I wonder if the word out of Spring Training was, "Don't change a thing", without taking into account that maybe the pitchers wouldn't be so eager to locate just about every pitch in the strike zone as they prepared for the real thing.

It be OK to take pitches every now and then. I should look this up somehow.

Other notes:

  • Luke Gregerson brought his ERA down from a billion to 20.25
  • Having not paid much attention to Jason Giambi's career, it's remarkable to me how this guy used to be a feared hitter. He just looks like a fat guy now with a big head.
  • It hasn't taken long, but I think Dick and Mud are getting a little more comfy in the booth. Dick doesn't feel the need to steady stream the play calling a la Vin Scully. Mud seems more willing to crack the occasional joke without fear of offending the Legendary Broadcaster.

Another game of baseball will be played today. GO PADRES!!!
