Make your 2010 Padres Predictions
The 25 man roster is pretty much set so it's time to make your 2010 Padres Predictions. Here are your past predictions from 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. At the end of the season, as I do each year, I'll go through all of your predictions and pick the most psychic / knowledgeable fan. So make no mistake there will be a day of reckoning where you will be held accountable!
Answer me the following questions in the comments:
- What will be the 2010 Padres' record?
- What place will they finish in the NL West?
- Who will win the NL West?
- What Padre player will definitely be traded before the end of the season?
- How many Padres All-Stars will there be?
Most super computers and robots are predicting the team to win 71 games, so you can either match your stats and smarts against machines or preferably channel your prediction from the great beyond.
As we do each year we warn you to be careful if you try to summon your answers using the dark arts. The services of those that dwell in the darkness are not free.
Go ahead and make other predictions as well, such as World Series Champions, All Star Game winner, etc. if you are are so inclined.
My predictions after the jump.... don't copy me.
- 85-77
- 2nd
- Giants
- Chris Young

I think it would be nice to throw out that other prediction someone (I can’t remember who or when) was talking about. The no hitter or cycle prediction?
I say Kyle hits for the cycle, with an inside the park home run.

3. Giants
4. Hairston, Jr.
5. Two
I’m optimistic about the record, I know. The Hairston trade guess was done just to be different.

5. 1 All-Star if that is still the rule, if there isn’t a rule for participation then 0.

1. What will be the 2010 Padres’ record?
84-78
2. What place will they finish in the NL West?
Third.
3. Who will win the NL West?
Rockies
4. What Padre player will definitely be traded before the end of the season?
Heath Bell….though Stauffer could be another one too.
5. How many Padres All-Stars will there be?
2….Gonzales as a backup and Bell
I agree with an earlier poster that Blanks for RoY contention doesn’t seem too far either….GG for perhaps Gonzales, that’s about it. Bell doesn’t lead this year in saves, neither Gonzales in HRs, nor anyone in strikeouts, ERA, or BA. I think Everth could make a run at leading in stolen bases, but predicting that can be a crapshoot.
Predictions
NL Pennant, then a heart breaking loss to the Rays.
88-74, NL Wild Card
Rockies NL West Champs

1 player Traded, Stauffer.

Here's something interesting.
CHONE actually projects the Giants to finish last in the NL West with 76 wins, and the Padres finishing 4th at 78-84.
No matter how great their pitching, the Giants hit even worse than the Padres.

2. Injuries will be relatively minimal.
3. Blanks, Headley & Venable will significantly improve.
4. A-Gone will have a solid year, but not as good as ’09, but he will have more RBIs and less walks. He will finish the year as a Padre.
5. The team will finish in 2nd or 3rd and almost make the playoffs.
6. The Bullpen will be our saviors.
7. Since the team will be doing well, there will be no major trades, for good p.r.

Blind Optimism
1. 90-71
2. 1st
3. The Friar
4. Yorvit (because Hundley will cement the job as his) and Stauffer (time to sell high)
5. 1, Adrian (I’d say more, but even as an optimist I think the NL is better off without any of our pitchers in the game for a while)
Extra Predictions: Eck will get less than 300 AB’s and still be the most important player on the roster. Clayton Richard will become the staff “ace” by the All-Star break. Matt Stairs will get Heath Bell on NutriSystem and his velocity will decrease by 5%. Dick Enberg will do a great job, but it still won’t be as good as having Matty V. in the booth.

The Padres have turned a corner as a franchise. After two rough years we seem to know what we are doing. We are going to embrace the park we play in by building teams around Petco rather than trying to build teams like the rest of the League. We are going to emphasize PITCHING, PITCHING, PITCHING, defense and athletic “smart” patient offense. We are going to focus on player development. Let us PRAY that this is last rapid change in baseball philosophy as a franchise that we undertake and is the last rebuilding process we will have to endure as Friar Faithful.
Lock up Adrain. Lock up Chase. Lock up Latos. Lock up Richard. Invest in the kids while you can get them cheap. Our payroll is TINY. Spend some revenue sharing loot. We have been a poorly long termed planned franchise for far too long. We are starting to stock pile some potential talent. It is a good thing. But it is a process that demands that WE WAIT for the guys to be good enough and then maybe we will have a better chance to win. A better chance to actually make the playoffs, much less have to win in the playoffs (I hate St Louis). We have been waiting as Padres fans for 41 years. Not a long time in comparsion to other franchises but a long time to us. We have never had a pitcher throw a no-no. We have never had a hitter hit for the cycle. We are Padres fans. We get shat on whenever we are out of San Diego. I am going to school in Boston and these dudes talk smack all day long. I have to defend my team and my city’s reputation against some unchill bros. But i do it with pride.
I want a championship now!!! No more waiting…..

one prediction
Sadly, I am living smack-dab in the middle of mid market hell between NYC and Boston. All I hear is how good/bad the Yankees and Red Sox are or aren’t. Then someone asks me what I think, I tell them I am Padres fan. They all laugh like they never knew Padres fans existed, then they realize I am serious and they are insulting me, and they stop laughing. They then ask how the padres look this year, I have resorted to quoting a classic american sports film and I start chanting,
“FOURTH PLACE, FOURTH PLACE, FLINT MICHIGAN MEGA BOWL, FLINT MICHIGAN MEGA BOWL, FOURTH PLACE!!!!!!” and then I go running down an imaginary tunnel.

You stay classy San Diego
Rockies
why is everyone so caught up on the Rockies? i just dont see what everyone else see’s in them. Heltons old, no real pitching, a few decent young guys, and Tuilowitzki is the only decent one.
You stay classy San Diego
Carlos Gonzalez looks like a legit average average guy and ever other position in their lineup consists of guys who don’t hurt you out there and guys like Helton and Hawpe who get on base a ton. You say there is no real pitching by Ubaldo Jimenez is as real as they come, Cook is solid and De La Rosa is getting the projections of a #2 starter. Their bullpen is really solid, although losing Street affects that.
I don’t think they are better than the Dodgers, but they definitely have the foundation to stay near the top of the standings. They are a very complete team with barely any weaknesses.
