Trying to figure out the Padres Opening Day Roster
I'm trying to figure out who makes this 25 man roster. Usually by this time in Spring Training the decisions seem a lot more clear cut, but I haven't been paying very close attention. So this is me trying to catch up while blogging at the same time.
There are 26 players on the roster now and Thatcher will likely start the season on the Disabled List. That brings the count down to 25.
So if the starting rotation is Garland, Young, Correia, Richard and Latos then you can send LeBlanc to Portland to make room for Matt Stairs.
But as Corey Brock reminds us Matt Stairs isn't on the 40 man roster yet, so one player will need to be dropped from there as well. Then you send the two other non-roster invitees, Denorfia and Stewart, to Portland with LeBlanc.
So if I'm following all this correctly then the only real question left is who will be dropped from the 40 man roster to make room for Stairs. Somebody please tell me the answer to that question then I think I'll be up to date.

This is the 25 man roster.
When Thatcher goes on dl that makes a spot for Stairs.
As for the 40 man, I would guess Liz is probably the odd man out. Maybe garrison?
Yeah I know it's the 25 man roster
I was guessing Italiano for no particular reason for the odd man out on the 40 man.
My trade sense is tingling...
I think we are going to see a SP trade…. either early or mid season. It could be one of our younger, out of option guys, but I am thinking one of our “front end of the rotation” guys who makes more money.
If the organization thinks Gallagher, Stauffer, Latos, and LeBlanc, and Richard can all start… it’s hard to see why you keep Garland, Young, AND Correia… I think the team keeps all of these pitchers for the first month or two, but come summer, I think we enter trade town. OR, we enter disable list city…. one of the two. Granted, if any of them really falter, “you are the weakest link, good bye.”

Stuaffer
Corey was hinting around about Stauffer being traded next week when other teams were in desperate need of pitching.
Then the Padres came out and said that Stauffer had made the team.
Plus I think the Padres are going to do what Zen said, keep all their younger (ie cheaper) pitchers around in order to replace the vets they will trade. I still feel that the Padres are going to either start Latos in the majors then option him to the minors at some point, just to keep his innings in check, with the most likely timing being when Thatcher returns from the DL
As for the 40-man roster spot, Garrison is most likely out until midseason with his knee injury, so my guess is they simply move him to 60 day DL and open the spot on the 40 man that way.
We? Maybe.
Padres? It seems so.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.
