Spring Training Game Thread: Padres @ Reds

Photo

I had a dream last night that I had to catch rattlesnakes with my bare hands and milk them of their venom.  There was one particular snake that was difficult to wrangle and venom went everywhere. It was exhilarating. Did I have this dream because I had been watching the game before I went to bed and had just watched the Padres milk the D-Backs?

If so what will I dream about tonight?

FollowthePadres has the line up as usual:

#Padres lineup vs. #Reds in Goodyear: Cabrera 6, Eckstein 4, Venable 9, Blanks 7, Headley 5, SHairston 8, Salazar 3, Hundley 2, Latos 1

I know

it is very annoying. You can barely hear the broadcast while typing

I don't know if a great outing by Latos will secure him a spot

But, a bad outing may hurt his cause. I got him for $2 in my fantasy baseball auction, so I’m rooting for him to be in the rotation (plus it gives the Padres the best chance to win games).

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

listening on XM

Reds broadcasters are mystified that the Padres are playing so well in ST, especially given their minimal payroll.

I gotta say, I’m pretty damn excited about the season. I’m just pissed that I’m still in Padres media limbo and can only get them on MLB.tv

What's going on with Josh Barfield?

did he get an invite to spring?

Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.

by Mad_Villain on Mar 30, 2010 2:18 PM PDT reply actions

On February 19, 2010, Barfield signed a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres with an invite to spring training.

He has apparently played in one game this spring with the Padres, going 0-2.

by creanium on Mar 30, 2010 2:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Corey Brock tweeted

in response to us asking about him that he was not given an invite to Spring Training, and is merely roster fodder for AAA.

After spring training, you won’t hear his name again unless you listen to either San Antonio or Portland games.

by Mad_Villain on Mar 30, 2010 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Well

When you’re not on the 40 man roster, you don’t have a good shot at the majors. They basically signed him because they had no depth at 2B. They weren’t sure what Antonelli’s status would be and they traded their AA 2B (Sogard). The needed someone to take some of those at bats and keep there from being a hole in the infield.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

Me too.

I bet he’ll get a shot at some point in the major league bullpen, possibly in September, provided he doesn’t blow up in AAA.

by Zach (maestro876) on Mar 30, 2010 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions

He's not on the 40 man

So by saying he’ll play in September you’re basically counting on injuries and trades to get him there.

Not likely....

The cactus is a hitters league, with the ballparks play small, (much like chase field). So at least at home its not going be this way for the Padres. Though they haven’t relied on the long ball.

Wonko, I think you may be right about trading Savior.

If he has a good year, then they should be able to move him for something pretty good, and we have some nice 3B prospects coming up in the system.
