hotstove.com / archive " Will Adrian Gonzalez Make it Through 2010 as a Padre?
Things get busy this time of year with other sites asking us to answer questions and such. We asked Jonny Dub to field a few of them when we don't have time. So prepare for our answers to seem super negative and hopeless in the future. They gave me credit, but it was really Jon. I guess to some extent I'm at fault.

His statement that, “Some Padres fans have already come to terms with Adrian Gonzalez being traded this season” is by far the most positive thing he says in that paragraph.

I just don't see it happening
There is no way the Padres are going to get 40 HRs a season from anyone or any combination of players they might get in a trade of Adrian Gonzalez. If they did, they’d have to pay a lot more than what they are now paying Gonzalez. And the rebuilding process already seems to be well on its way. Do they really need more low-level prospects?
The bottom line is that the Padres are in a great situation. They have a 40-HR, nearly-100-RBI guy for the next two seasons and they’re paying him less than a third of his true value. They’re going to ride that out for the next two seasons and consider themselves fortunate. And by 2012, perhaps the Jaff Deckers and Logan Forsythes of the organization will be ready for prime time.
Unless they plan on raising the payroll to around $100m by then
they won’t be able to afford to sign him to a new contract.
