Spring Training Game Thread: 3/26 Padres @ Brewers

I had a dream a few nights ago that I was clipping articles for Around the Mission.  The article I was reading was about the Padres and DePodesta parting ways.  If that happens then you'll know that I can see the future and will pay a little closer attention next time I write a dream diary.  I woke up and realized I was blogging during my sleep.  That's why I didn't post on Gaslamp Ball yesterday, it creeped me out.

I want to try an experiment because I don't think anybody actually reads what I write for Game Threads.  If you've read this far then clandestinely mention "Cracker Jacks" in a comment.  Those that didn't read this will wonder why everybody is talking about Cracker Jacks today.

SD Padres Twitter has the line up:

3/26 @ MIL lineup: Gwynn 8, Eck 4, J. Hairston 5, Venable 9, Stairs 3, Torrealba 2, Cunningham 7, Cabrera 6, Garland 1...call on 860/1700 AM

Go Padres!

True ability of a pitcher adjusted to a scale that looks like an ERA.

Fielding Independent Pitching

I believe.

There’s actually a stat that is similar but is better for predicting future ERA, called SIERA. Skill Independent ERA. Similar concept but it focuses on what a pitcher controls as opposed to removing what he can’t control, if that makes sense.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

FIP is my favorite stat.

"I aim to misbehave." - Mal Reynolds

by Zach (maestro876) on Mar 26, 2010 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I like SIERA, but its not readily available yet

BP can be slow getting their stats out there. It’s only incrementally better than xFIP though. And that’s only slightly better than QERA.

As a fantasy player though, having a stat like SIERA that can help predict future ERA is more useful to me.

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

"I'm a Padre at heart. Always gonna root for the Padres. Twenty-five years [with this organization], how can't you? Next year I'm gonna be rooting like a son-of-a-gun for these guys and for Blackie ... I'm gonna be rooting for the next general manager here, rooting for the city, the fans, everybody. In regards to the stolen bases

it’s entirely possible that pitchers and catchers aren’t really working that hard to hold runners, given that it’s spring. It will be really interesting to see how successful they are in the real games.
