PSA from PSA: Spring Training 2010

PSA from PSA are Public Service Announcements from Pad Squad Andre. PSA keeps Gaslamp Ballers informed of happenings that we should know about if we are to spend more time with Pad Squad Andre. -Dex

My family and I have just returned from a great week in AZ. We saw a lot of games, did not spend very much money and made a lot of great family memories.

The Padres Peoria Ballpark is a great complex. They lowered the price of parking down to $5 and lawn tickets are still just $7. So you guys can see a game for $19.  That is a great value.

I am glad to hear that the Gaslampball Boys are returning to Peoria this year, so I figured I would provide some new tips for their trip. Here are my top 5 and together maybe we can create a top 10.

#5 Do not buy 50 McNuggets for $9.99 if there are only two of you eating them. No person should ever eat more that 20 McNuggets in one sitting.

#4 Gas in AZ is about $.30 cheaper than SD. Plan to fill up in AZ and then do it again before you cross back into CA.

#3 Walk around the concourse area of the Peoria Stadium. Lots of free food, including an awesome Rock Bottom Brewery BBQ sandwich.

#2 Bring some spending money for the Padres store. They have a ton of discounts on items that have the home plate Padres logo.

#1 Go early to the Peoria complex, probably around 9 or 9:30 and watch the Padres practice on fields #1, #2 and #3. This is the best access you will have to talk directly with the players and coaches.

Also, if you decide you want to see another Spring Training facility, I would suggest the Surprise Ballpark. Free parking, inexpensive tickets and a great atmosphere for baseball and just 10 minutes away from the Padres Peoria facility.

Does #5 Apply

if there is a wager involved?

Trust me...

don’t do it. The money or whatever the wager is isn’t worth it. There was 139 McNuggets consumed by myself & 3 friends during our first Spring Training visit. My stomach hasn’t been the same since.

I hear ya

I organized a hot pocket eating contest. The winner ate 10 hot pockets in 1 hour and was messed up for a few weeks.

Surprise may be 10 minutes away to get to the start of the game

But you leave the game during rush hour and you are miles away from a freeway and may get caught behind a long train. I hate Surprise. Glendale is pretty much just as bad though because everyone gets funneled into a traffic jam.

Scottsdale and Tempe both have free parking in neighborhoods. Tempe is almost always packed because Angels fans come in droves so it’s a good atmosphere.

I hadn’t been to Phoenix Municipal (A’s) in years, but they renovated it a couple of years ago and it’s much nice. Food selection sucks.

Peoria basically is the best of almost all worlds. It’s got a decent variety of food selections. It sells some quality premium beers. The access to players before the game for practices is virtually unmatched (you can’t even see practice for the Giants because the practice at the stadium, but don’t open the doors until practice is over). It has the lawn in the OF (some stadiums don’t) plus a decent set of stadium seats (upper box can be shaded if you know where to go). It’s fairly easy to get in and out of the parking lots. And they have a large bar (Salty Senorita) within walking distance.

The only issue is that if you want to find a scene at night, Mill Rd., downtown Phoenix and Scottsdale Rd. are all pretty far away. The closest thing would be the strip mall sort of thing that is next to University of Phoenix Stadium and Jobing.com Arena. It’s better than I just made it sound, but not as established as the other places. Of course, you can make your own scene at a couple of the local sports bars (like the Salty Senorita or that one a little farther that Matt Bush got kicked out of, McDuffy’s or something).

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong.

If you get to downtown Phoenix, get the best pizza in the world:

Did you spill your salad on the pizza

or you sitting underneath a tree during the Fall?

That's fresh basil

It’s arranged artistically, in a “so what, I’m an artist, I don’t do symmetry”-style.

That may be something tasty

But it probably shouldn’t be called pizza.

Isn't that that Pizza Bianco place

All the people I know in Phoenix tell me its overrated and I shouldn’t waste my money. The best pizza doesn’t usually come from fancy restaurants that are not even open for lunch.

So, I assume you've tried it?

When you’re privately contracted to have your oven rebuilt in the homes of the rich and famous, you’re doing something right and when your pizza is that good, you don’t have to be open for lunch.

$5 + $7

does not equal $19.
