Spring Training Game Thread: Thursday, March eleventh... Padres vs Cubs

OK. My first one this year... How do we do this...

First, steal lineup from Corey Brock's Twitter account:

#Padres lineup vs. #Cubs: Cabrera 6, Eckstein 4, Headley 5, Hairston 8, Venable 9, Stairs 3, Torrealba 2, Durango 7, Garland 1. #MLB

CHECK.

Second... Add a sick photo to the top of this post with an equally sick fake quotation that is both humorous and gets us in the mood to kill/snap some fools.... CHECK...

Third, mention the UrbanDictionary definition of Garland:

Someone who's gonna knock down any impertinent fool who dares to cross swords with him.

OH, SNAP. IF YOU DON'T KNOW YOU BETTER GET SOME EDUCATION.

Check.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Garland pitch.

Does anyone else think he or Correia should be the opening day starter?

Because

It’s not like there are any guys in the lineup where you’re going:
“Why are they giving that guy another go around?” or
“Why is that guy starting for them?” or
“Why isn’t that guy retired already” or
“Why did they call up that kid? He is just not ready.”

Everybody in the lineup belongs in the majors and everybody is either an established major leaguer or a young’n with talent to become one. But, it’s not a sure thing that any of that actually makes them any good.

I'm already marking Headley as "decent"

He put up a 15 VORP at a position where the standard for hitting is pretty high. Now he’s moving to a position where that standard is lower. He’s better than replacement level. He’s a “decent” part of the organization. He has the potential to be “good” though.

I considered adding ECab along with Blanks and Latos...

But didn’t.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d be thrilled if he turned out like Furcal. But I guess I don’t see Furcal as being someone that you’d build a team around. He’s a great piece to have, but I guess not what I’d consider “great”.

On the other hand, I see Latos having the potential to be like Cole Hamels (hopefully with sustained success) and Blanks’ upside would be Adrian Gonzalez. Either of those would be guys that you can build a team around.

I realize this lineup doesn't have Adrian or Blanks in it

but the lack of hits against a not very good Cubs staff doesn’t bode well.

I wouldn't worry about it at all.

I’m not saying we’re going to have a great offense, but this like our 6th game of spring training. It’s one step away from meaningless.

That's odd

The Cartographer pitching the ninth inning of a Spring Training game.

Usually you send the closer out sooner so he faces the better hitters. I guess there are no “better” hitters in this Scrubbies lineup.

I'm not trying to go against you, I'm just curious.

Didn’t Mike Fontenot start for the Cubs last year? And is he very good?
