What do you NEED for A-Gonz

Theoretically. Throw out the idea that we could keep him at all - Thats a whole different argument. Insead I am asking you to make your prospect wish list(realistic please), in terms of what you would consider a fair deal for A-Gonz. One of the only times a team forced to trade their budding new superstar has benefited, was when the Florida Marlins got Hanley Ramirez & Anibel Sanchez back in return for Beckett(One of the best pitchers in MLB) & Mike Lowell.

Star-divide

Where would you start? Rumors have been swirling about Gordon Beckham the 3B from Chitown. An interesting thought would be bringing back the local boy Stephen Strasburg from Washington. Jesus Montero from the Yankees looks very promising but I would puke if I saw Adrian in New York :O The RedSox have been the most interested team(says the media), but I think if we traded him to them we are selling ourselves short of prospect value? How about the Met, with Fernando Martinez? What do you think?

No Stras...

One, they can’t trade him. Two, they wouldn’t.

All this stuff isn't for "who can we pick"...

The whole point of this “trade” is so the Padres can keep being cheapskates by paying nothing, and then giving them away because they are too expensive.

That being said: I would love to get some good, young players like Kershaw, Porcello, or maybe yes Beckham, but for various reasons I wouldn’t like us to trade Adrian for any of these players (assuming they’d be traded at all!).

Being entirely unrealistic with my trade proposals, I think Porcelllo and Jackson for Adrian would be ehh if they have to boot out the drunk anytime soon.

Orioles

Start it Brian Matusz and some other young pitching. Theoretically, the most cost effective (i.e. cheap) and the Padres most competitive scenario is several young and high caliber arms, then to play to Petco’s advantages. The Orioles showed high interest in Texiera with a huge contract when he was on the open market, so they at least may consider Adrian long-term. And from what I’ve read, part of their organizational development strategy is to grow high ceiling arms, and either trade for or sign big bats.

I doubt they would give up their highly-heralded prospect and future ace, though, considering their strong young pitching is currently one of the only chances they can compete in the AL East. It would probably be a tough trade for both sides, so I guess it depends on the guts of both organizations.

I've already said

It will start with getting two guys that will be ready to start in the majors some time this year or next year at the latest at either CF, RF, SS, C or P. One of which could be projected to be a future all star level stud and another that projects to be above average at his position. That’s the starting point. After that you can starting adding a bullpen arm or a solid low level prospect.

Gordon Beckham (2B/3B) and Fernando Martinez (LF) don’t really fit the bill on any of those qualifications. The White Sox cupboard is pretty bare at those key positions. Pretty much all the Mets prospects are too far away from making the majors. If the Padres wait until after the 2010 season maybe then they can start to look at Mets prospects.

If I’m the Padres I keep asking for the moon until someone either gives it to me or comes darn near close. I think that no matter what the team is better in 2010 and 2011 with Adrian on it.

C+2B/CF/LF

Wonko,

Do you know of any organizations with a good catcher and either 2B or LF or CF prospect that seem like a good trading partner.
Just looking at our top level prospects, I think those are the most worrisome positions. I am not overly optimistic on any of our catchers (although perhaps hopeful).

1B/3B – Good with Headley/Blanks (and prospects)
SS – I think we are ok/good (not great)
Pitchers – always want more, but we seem to be in pretty good shape currently.
Outfield – Ok, but not good once Blanks moves to 1B.
2B – I know we have several prospects and Antonelli is hopefully starting to hit better… but this has been a problem position for a while.
C – What I said above.

The problem is that C/2B are sort of “cheap” positions… not a lot of offensive power expected out of either position… So, trading (losing) an offensive powerhouse to get some nice pieces, but not a really good offensive punch… doesn’t really appeal to me… even if that is the best case scenario. Whereas, the positions that should give us the biggest offensive bang (1B/3B, LF) are positions that we already have some players for (converting surplus 3B into LF for example).

So, wonko, do any teams currently (or will by August) have the package you want or would like to see?

The reason I say SS is that I’m not convinced that ECab can play there and I don’t the pipeline in the minors is that deep here. Either ECab or the guy in the trade could go to 2B.

I have no idea what you are talking about as far as “cheap” positions. C/SS/2B/CF are the hardest positions to fill with above average or all star level players. The average 1B/3B, LF are guys where the average player already provides a quality offensive bang. Not to mention that they are on the low end of the defensive spectrum and may play themselves out of a position if they are already young and that unskilled defensively.

There are basically no teams that are well equipped to trade for Adrian. That is part of the reason he is still a Padre.

By August

Maybe the Twins could put a package together with Wilson Ramos © and either Aaron Hicks (CF) or Ben Revere (OF) leading the way, but Revere and Hicks are both farther from the majors than we’d like.

Anything the Mets offer would revolve around Jerry Mejia (RHP). Fernando Martinez (OF) doesn’t look like he could handle CF at Petco, but if somehow he could stay healthy I guess you could envision him as a RF or LF. However, he’ll probably end up playing a key role for the big league team by August. Wilmer Flores (SS) is an excellent prospect but he probably won’t even be in AA by August. Ike Davis (1B) is the guy the Mets wouldn’t need after an Adrian trade, but that would ensure that Blanks won’t move to 1B. The fit just doesn’t seem to be there.

The Rays could do it. A Jeremy Hellickson (RHP) and Reid Brignac (SS) deal could work. You wouldn’t get much power back since that’s not really their organizational strong suit. You could get back more pitching. This isn’t to say that the Rays would do it, but just that they could.

The Rangers could do it. Martin Perez (LHP) and Mitch Moreland (RF) could make a good package, especially if you add in one of their high ceiling guys like Engel Beltre (CF) or Wilmer Font (RHP). They also have some other good pitching prospects to make a deal work.

The main problem is that for whatever reason the minors right now don’t have a lot of up-the-middle guys who are above High-A. And the ones that are (Heyward, Jennings, Santana, Posey, Escobar and the like) are probably untouchable. There’s a lot of pitching that’s probably tradeable, but the chances for getting a return on your investment are low (i.e. if you trade for 3 pitching prospects, probably only one pitcher will pan out, whereas if you trade for position players above AA you’ll usually get something useful out of each).

I never know what these types of questions

are supposed to accomplish. It’s not like fans have any say in the trade, if they did he wouldn’t be traded.

Personall,y I don't have the authority...

to trade Adrian, but if some other team wants to claim that they completed a successful trade for Adrian, they could buy me off with the following:

1. A brand new house (no mortgage) in a good climate (San Diego would be fine) and in a good neighborhood with good schools and parks.

OR…

2. Free season tickets for life in some sort of plush section of the stadium with free food and all that good stuff… you know, like where the owner and his friends sit.

5 Good Arms

with 2 of them Projected to be Top End of the Rotation.

Arms are good, as you can trade them for other things.

We need a press statement, ASAP!

“The Padres would like to announce that we would be willing to trade Adrian Gonzalez in exchange for a World Series appearance. If the commissioner’s office will agree to such a deal, then we will give relinquish Adrian’s contract to the commissioner’s office and allow them to assign Adrian to a team worthy of his abilities. The Padres believe this will benefit all parties involved, as long as he does not get assigned to the Dodgers.”
