    Meh

Like I said in the last state of the Padres payroll, I like the Padres as is I’m ok with them not meeting the 40 million dollar mark. Would the Padres really be better off signing an over priced veteran to take at bats or innings away from one of their younger players. Really the only position I think the Padres could stand to upgrade with another proven MLB player is 2B but the last administration kind of messed that up for them by singing Eckstine to an extension, besides he really just keep the seat warm until Darnell or Forsythe is ready.

    i agree

i mean they had 3 needs and filled them all. Maybe they were willing to spend a little bit more on a CF/SP/Catcher but they got good deals on all of them. Maybe they thought they would spend more on the arbitration guys but got good deals.

Mayyyyyybe there is one more move to make. can’t have too much pitching right?

    Personally, I think it's unacceptable

I refuse to buy tickets until the Padres give everybody on the 40 man roster a $50,000 raise.

    Regardless of the source

I think it is a fair point.
    New owner, new GM
It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if the team gets off to a slow start and he gets fired.

by strummer on Feb 7, 2010 3:08 PM PST up reply actions

The job he did at the end of 2009 was phenominal

Balancing a roster full of kids, 4A players and Gonzo, there’s no way he’s the first one out the door in 2010.

by Lancers46 on Feb 7, 2010 3:23 PM PST up reply actions

    I think it depends

on how they do in 2010.
If they start out poorly, then August/September 2009 looks like an aberration.

And who knows what Moorad and Hoyer are thinking. They may want their own guy.

by strummer on Feb 8, 2010 4:43 AM PST up reply actions

It would surprise me if they made such a late decision

Why would you start another season, having gone all through spring training, with someone you’re still assessing? Especially when you’ve made it clear last season was the time for assessment, and Bud proved himself.

It’s sad that that’s considered the start of a rumor nowadays, since it’s on MLB.com. “Some baseball writers think…” – none named, zero sources, completely speculative. It’s how you fake a neutral point of view when you just want to say “I think.”

I could care less about what MLB.com has stated,

I am not basing my opinion on that.

    I am just looking at:
New owner, new GM, rebuilding team.
It wouldn’t be the first time a manager was fired under those circumstances.

by strummer on Feb 8, 2010 4:35 AM PST up reply actions

That’s specious reasoning and I don’t buy it.

What “history” are you trying to apply?

“History” in your mind obviously doesn’t apply, because you’re ignoring what has already happened. “History” is what Kevin Towers and the rest of the fired/replaced FO heads are, remember? If Bud was going to be fired, it would’ve been with them.

“history” is in quotes because it’s used ironically, short for “the events you want to look at and jump to conclusions from, not the events you don’t”

You could turn her column into a drinking game.

Chug one beer for every time she says “although”, do a tequila shot every time she uses “most baseball writers think”, etc. Pretty soon, you might start thinking the Dodgers are great too.

    It really is amazing

how vulnerable their SP is. Kershaw still hasn’t taken the next step and the increase in IP last year could spell major arm injuries this year. Randy Wolf was one of their most consistent pitchers, and now he’s gone. We took one of their innings eaters in Garlands and Padilla is likely to turn into a pumpkin again.

Sure, the Dodgers have a great bullpen. But they were crazy overworked last year. I can’t wait to watch this team go up in flames.

He will make $750,000 this year

Updating a previous report, Buster Olney, of ESPN The Magazine, reports San Diego Padres C Yorvit Torrealba will make $1.25 million as part of his one-year deal with a mutual option for the 2011 season. He will make $750,000 this year and will receive a $500,000 buyout if they don’t exercise the mutual option worth $3.5 million.
