Unfinished Business: New Padres Crushes :)
So at FanFest last Saturday, Hyun Young and I were talking about our baseball crushes with jbox from Gaslamp Ball. jbox asked me who my new Padres crush would be now that Kouz is gone and gave me some suggestions. I wasn't really sure who I wanted to make my new crush, but I've finally realized who they are going to be! - Bud Black Spring Training Preview

QUESTION: Could you comment on Everth Cabrera? ANSWER: He’s a fast learner and extremely skilled. He wants to excel. We will see growth just from him playing the game. Let me back track, we were about ready to make him our everyday shortstop last April when he suffered the injury (broken hook of the hamate bone in his left hand).

You guys think Richard is going to end up with more wins than Young? Also of note, the heavy Heath Bell picture that’s at the start of this thread. Oh how I miss Heavy Heath.

If you've got a good way to predict how many wins a pitcher will get
You’d be the first.
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

Come on man
If you listen to the show I said I think the Padres will struggle vs. other teams 1’s and 2’s, but should play well against the back end of other teams rotations. Richard will benefit from that and has a good chance to lead the team in wins this season.
Can’t be afraid to take your shot once in a while.

There's also that Young just isn't a good pitcher.
But like Wonko said, wins for pitchers are impossible to predict.

Considering I run a Fantasy Site
You have to be able to guesstimate. I don’t think predicting wins is impossible by any means, in fact it’s easier than predicting numbers that have larger ranges.
Predicting how many HRs Blanks hits is much harder than predicting the number of Wins Garland has.

It's just that
wins have so little to do with how well a pitcher actually pitches. I don’t even know why anyone would care how many wins a guy gets. It statsterbation in my opinion.
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

I agree that Wins don't mean as much
as they once were perceived to.
But now I think the argument has gone too far in the other extreme.
Of course Wins mean something! They just do not deserve to be as valued as they once were. It is not a coincidence that pitchers like Maddux, Seaver, Spahn, and Mathewson won a lot of games, and had very good W-L records.
There are always exceptions: Clay Kirby and Dave Roberts on those awful Padres teams of the early ’70’s, etc.
But that doesn’t mean “wins have so little to do” with a pitchers performance.
As long as you understand the causation
That good pitchers win a lot of games and not that pitchers who win a lot of games are good, then I’m fine with that.
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

Also
If I were to get all geeky about it, then yes you would have a better chance of actually “guesstimating” correctly, but a much smaller chance of you guesses correlating to actual values.
Also, a team’s #1 starter facing another team’s #1 or #2 starter only happens for a few weeks at the beginning of the season. Maybe not even that long given the strange off days at the start. Put that in your guesstopipe and smoke it.
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

That was Friarhood predicting that
but I predict Young will spend a considerable amount of time on the DL.

Seriously
They couldn’t have hired a worse guy for that job. And I have a strong (okay, very strong) suspicion that he’s being paid well-below what that slot would normally earn. Which is probably why he got the job.
I’ve become an uber Anaheim Ducks fan over the past year and it makes me laugh everytime he wants me to “slapshot” a phone call. The guy is clueless when it comes to the sport, as he is on most of them. His take on mainstream sports is bad enough. His hockey comments are the stuff of fiction.

I think...
Bell is going to have an awful season. Sorry, I don’t like to be a pessimist, especially with my Pads, but I just have one of those feelings. Anyone with me?

Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? ◔ヮ◔

If Bell had an awful season
it would be greatly out of character with his history.
