Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

First Time Commenters report for duty!

Gaslamp Ball wants you... in the worst way!

You'll notice that we rarely ask you to sign up and comment because we kinda trust that you'll join when you're ready.  Today is the exception.

We've tried this experiment 1, 2, 3, 4 times and each time we've been pleasantly surprised by the new commenters that have joined and contributed to the site in some way.

Pitchers and catchers have already reported to Spring Training facilities all over the world! Now it's time for you to report.  The season is upon us. We need you in our corner.

This is your chance to finally realize your dream of becoming a Gaslamp Baller.  There's some people new to the site and some long time lurkers that just need a little encouragement to join in.  Comment for the first time, give us your thoughts on the team or introduce yourself.

If it wasn't for threads like these we might never have been introduced to Padres_Hobo, whithd3 and goldfyngor

Jakob Nielsen says that 95% of blog readers are lurkers, 5% contribute and .1% contribute frequently.

That means for every time that we get someone like sdsuaztec4 who posts 7400 one word comments, there are 1000 other sane people lurking around doing nothing.

Ease yourself into the warm waters of Gaslamp Ball, clothing is totally optional.

Lurked for a while, commented a handful of times,

but thought it would be cool to introduce myself.
Hello, my name is Matt, and I enjoy baseball.
San Diego native, and have always loved the Pads. It’s been cool and a little depressing to see guys that I played ball with/against play for/against my team, but it does make for some decent stories. Although I’m sure everybody I know is tired as hell of hearing me say “Oh yea, when we played together…” and “When I saw him changing in the locker room…”.
Anyway, it’s cool to be part of this site, I think you guys do a great job.
Thanks for your time.

1% percent guy here!!!

Hey guys my name is Jose I’m from National City but now live in Kearny Mesa. I’m 25 yrs old and have been writting on Padres.com also as “Padrefanatico” but just yesterday I registered and started writting on here. I recently discovered this site and absolutely love it, What’s there not to love it’s like heaven for a Padres fan. I’m a 3rd generation die hard Padres fan and just love life from March to October. The Padres are a Major part of my life kind of like the guy from fever pitch was with the Red Sox. I’m known as the “Padre” guy at work, and also with my family and friends. I’m attending my 1st Spring training this year, and also like all years attending Opening day and at least 20 games including a trip to LA and hopefully SF or AZ. Love everything that’s going on with the team right now including signing arbitration eligable:Bell,Adams, and Correia… Not to mention new acquisitions: Garland, Torrealba, J. Hairston, S. Hairston, Cunningham, Stairs, and hopefully Felipe Lopez!!! Already attended the open house and Fanfest and they were both awseome. I’m really liking these new owners and all the moves they have made especially bringing Jed Hoyer on board. So looking forward to the Padres season I truly believe these guys can win consistently and will be so much fun to watch these young group of players develop and play some exciting baseball. Speed and pitching will be the key to success this year. I will be writting on this site all year long since Padres.com is now blocked at work lol. GO PADRES!!!!!

Noob alert!

Hey, my name’s Jordan and I’m 19. Eugene, Oregon native, currently going to college in Monmouth, Oregon (dare you to try to find it on a map). I’m a business major with a sports management minor (I want to work for the Padres marketing department some day). My dad took me to my first baseball game when I was 2 years old and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’m a huge Eugene Emeralds fan (Padres short season a team). I love seeing the kids we have in Eugene make it up to the big club. It’s always exciting!
I went to my first (and only, at this point) ML game when I was around seven or eight. I’m dying to move to SD for the weather and the baseball. I was this (the gap between two typed lower case L’s) close to going to my first spring training this year, but I’m going to Philly, New York, and New Jersey instead. I have plans to go next year though.
So, any other pacific north westerners out there? Or for that matter, any other women? Haha

My name is Sean, and I’m like 20…I’m originally from City Heights but now I’m going to school in New York. No, I don’t mind the Yankees. That also means I get along with people here, haha. I’ve been a Padres fan since I can remember….of course back then we weren’t the equivalent of a clump of dirt stuck under teams’ boots. I’ve always wanted to get season tickets and become those “old-timers” that we all know, but I don’t think it’s gonna happen because I won’t be out West very often after I graduate. Does this mean I’m crashing Mets games with my Padres gear on? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT. =D

fan in St. Louis

I’ve been lurking for a few years and commenting more recently, probably because I’m so damn anxious for the season to start. I grew up in SD and have been a lifelong Pads fan since my first game in ‘86. I’m excited to watch every game online this season and am planning to go to every Padres road game in the Midwest. If any ballers are planning to do the same or come to STL, hit me up. Oh, and I have to confess that I like the Cardinals too (insert GLB collective groan), but I am obsessed with the Padres and they will always be my #1 team!

by recorddigger on Feb 18, 2010 11:55 AM PST reply actions

Not cool..

Especially after the cardinals knocked the Pads out of the playoffs in 96, 05 and 06. really lame j/k bro whatevers the more Padre fans the merrier. IDK if anyone has checked but in a national level the Padres are not a very popular team almost like a pee-on very sad but I don’t care at all. I wouldn’t trade the Padres for nothing in the world.

When I went to Yankee Stadium in 2008....

New Yorkers on the subway didn’t even talk crap to me but they looked at me as though I was some sort of curiosity. I was pretty sure that they figured the SD on my hat stood for Santo Domingo. Had I quizzed them on who the Yankees beat in the 98 WS they would have been oblivious.

I actually got a google wave invite from dex a few months back, but that was the only post I made. Grew up in East County, first padre memories was ‘96, I think the first game I went to was 4th of July that year. I started following the padres pretty religiously since Petco opened, but since going to college in Santa Cruz I have relied on Teddy, Andy, and Gerry for coverage. I am about to graduate and move back, really excited about watching the season on TV or in person. I remember some of the game threads last season were pretty barren, hopefully I won’t be lurking and to shy to post so it’s a little bit more lively.

….Well, I have commented in class. Occasionally when a woman says, “do I look fat in this,” I will say “no comment,” which then leads to a hospital visit and a press report from me saying that the woman was “using the golf club to pull me from my car…oh yeah, she also acted courageously.”

I love gaslampball, been reading you guys for over a year. One day, should the opportunity present itself, I hope to take over the blog in a fit of bloodthirsty rage. Then, I will have supreme control over the worlds two most powerful blogs: Gaslampball.com and Hikidsimtvspatrickduffy.com.

I hope to comment often, particularly when the Padres are 20-3 a little ways into the season and I get my hopes up only to remember that these are “The San Diego Padres of 2010 – the year that we re-ruin everything”

Howdy Everybody

First time commenting as well. My name’s Michael, 19, and I go to SDSU. Back in high school, people thought I was crazy for liking the Padres. And I thought, “these people are idiots for wearing the SD logo and not liking the Padres!” Anywho, I was the the lone, proud, Padre in my school. It’s pretty crazy to think how much baseball has affected life for me so far. It helped me learn English alot faster when I was a kid; I don’t know how many times I said “Ken Caminiti is the man!” with that filipino accent.

I’ve followed this blog for about a year now, just reading what everyone has to say. And I must say, it’s really nice to see people still having the faith.I read this blog everyday. Hopefully during the season, I’d like to meet some people who I can actually share a conversation about the Padres with!

Hope to meet you guys at a game sometime!

a longtime lurker

Im Adam and Im 19 years old from Mexico. I consider myself lucky to live near SD. I’ve been a Padre fan since I was 6 years old and evey year I have followed my team through the radio or on TV. I got really angry when they stopped airing Padres games on TV (I live in Tijuana and Cox terminated contract with Cablemas my local cable provider). It was frustating because Cablemas had been airing the games since 1998 and I wish the Padres Office could help resolve this problem with Cox. There are a lot of baseball fans in Mexico (mostly Yankee and Dodger fans) but only a few Padre fans, but since Adrian Gonzalez there have been an increase of fans. Mexico doesn’t has a lot of baseball (they have only 2 leagues), so the Padres are the only baseball I have. I discovered this site 8 months and ive learned a lot about the Padres, the culture, the fans and every day I read the threads and blogs that you guys write I would love to contribute to this site as much as I can.

Brilliant.

There’s a city of 1.5 million people located 30 mins away from PETCO that has no baseball team, and the Padres and Cox somehow can’t work out a way to make sure the games are broadcast there? Doesn’t this seem like a pretty sizeable untapped market?

by theodore donald kerabatsos on Feb 18, 2010 2:17 PM PST up reply actions

They can't air games they aren't playing ;)

Who’s Cablemas’ competition?

I guess if they don’t feel there’s interest and it’s a soccer market like you say, then it may just not be worth it.

Yeah, I'm sure the Padres can't compete with soccer

But I know that there is some interest in baseball in Mexico. Considering that part of Adrian’s appeal is that he’s Mexican-American and playing in the closest MLB market to Mexico, doesn’t it seem like wasted potential to not have the games broadcast there?

Bienvenido Adam!!!

Welcome man so happy to know there are people in Mexico also following the Padres… Iknow what you mean most Mexicans are Dodger fans cause of Fernando Valenzuela and Yankee fans cause they don’t know any better and obviously they’re a popular team caus ethey buy championships every other year. These websites are great to follow the Padres you should also look into buying a package to watch the games online through MLB.com. Also don’t fprget to make it to Petco Park, they’re going to have some type of Mexican opening day the 1st week of the season, so look into that.

by Padrefanatico on Feb 18, 2010 2:39 PM PST up reply actions

Adrian...

They truly need to keep Adrian if they want to keep Mexican fans interested.. he’s the biggest thing for Mexico since Valenzuela and he will bring the fans himself for now and future generations. I don’t think Moorad see’s it that way but it’s true. my family is big time Mexican and have been following, attended and paid more interest to the game since he’s been around.

Adrian nor his agent have come out to say anything about any of this crazy trade talk.. It’s all been Moorad and co… Adrian does wanna be here so I’m sure he’ll take the SD discount to stay and he’s worth every penny. As far as I know he’s a Padre until the end of next season and with this current contract he’s in he did take the Padre discount because he signed it after the 24 hr season where he was already solid. When he signed it I was in schock that he took so little. Maybe all u guys were so busy jocking Khalil Greene, I would hate it when he would get a louder cheer than Adrian for the 06 and 07 seasons.

I'll take the bait....

I’ve been lurking for about a year. I really started following the Padres after the 2007 playoff run, and I’m hoping for another run this year!

Also hoping to catch some Padres spring training here in Tucson before the D-backs and Rockies split for Phoenix…

What if

it’s you’re first time posting in a really long time? Does that count?

I check the blog everyday actually, I just never comment. I’m like intimidated now haha. I dont’ know anyone anymore.

That's the craziest thing

It’s a great thing … the growing # of GLBers … but I look around and wonder if I accidentally wondered into the wrong blog bar.

Because whether I post really depends on the official decision.

Wow, I always forget how much I love this place!

I wish there was an action for TMI and TWSS

What would their color be?

Hmmm, TMI would be purple.

TWSS would be…

Continual lurker

Though I may post from time to time. In fact, the continuity of my posts will be contingent upon Tony Gwynn Jr.’s success in stolen bases; judging from last season, that should be infrequent.

by onthemark on Feb 18, 2010 6:19 PM PST reply actions

Plus or minus...

…Twenty stolen bases from TGJr this season. My heart says plus, but every single other thing since the beginning of ever says minus.

Lots of new commenters

This is going to be an awesome season.

You’re the guy who said "pull the ol’ bobblehead out every once in a while and play with it" but forgot to mention that wasn’t a euphemism.

Thanks for getting me kicked out of the library. Again.

Read everyday, love the site. I will now drop in a comment about my love of archi cianfrocco every couple of months

by ffattmo on Feb 18, 2010 7:56 PM PST reply actions

I always thought of getting a Cianfrocco jersey, and I may yet. I’ll never forget Ashby’s 74 pitch game when he provided the only run. It was the only time I sat in those robo-seats with the little computer monitors that you could use to watch replays and order food. Those really caught on. Cianfrocco on a scale of zero to TG?

Taking the bait

Been a Padres fan for my whole life and decided it was time to correspond with intelligent fans. I am 19, grew up in Poway and now go to USD so I just love me some San Diego. Looking forward to a great year ahead for the Pads.

Hi!

I’m not new to the site, this is just my formal introduction. I was dealing with a blazing fast 500mhz computer and I was trying to follow a game through gamecast and I was having a hard time following the game due to my PC’s lack of resources. I then found a game thread posted here and my eyes were open for the first time!!! I found a new and better way to follow the pads, Usually I just read the comments and I can picture what’s going on in the game, I started posting on those game threads whenever I could come and join in the fun. This site is the best padres site in the world, it really is, I first check with GLB before I check with the union tribune or pads.com

Anyway, to who ever stole my Idea for a perfect padres site, congratulations on a job well done, I think you guys are currently celebrating your first five years of existence. I hope you’re here for many many years to come. I’m from mexico btw, we need a new cable company so we can watch padres games… again!

Been lurking for a few weeks. Follow your RSS feed via Google Reader. Totally love your feed. You’ve got a great thing going here.

Just ACHING to get the season underway.

Splurged on some section 103 seats last season. Best seats I ever had at a ballgame. Just talking about it is making me drool…
