Now it's just silly. Tony Gwynn Jr has signed with the Dodgers
#Dodgers sign outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. to one year major league deal.
It's this kind of thing that's hard to stomach. Having Adrian go to the Red Sox is one thing, but letting Anthony Keith Gwynn Jr go to the Dodgers is just insulting. Now we'll have to see this guy like every year warming up with the opposition, pinch running against us and coming in for defensive purposes in the 8th innings of games. BRUTAL!
If there's one thing I don't want is to give other teams in the division the opportunity to strengthen their #5 and #6 outfielder spots with our light hitting family members. Come on.

Great minds.
I had said the same thing on t-dub re: him being a Dodger vs. Adrian being a Red Sock.

Great minds yet again.

Happy Trails
I’m not too amused that he is now a Dodger (who does he think he is, Kevin Brown?), but I feel that Cameron Maybin was essentially TG2’s replacement with a higher upside.
Plus if I remember correctly, he was due for a pretty penny as well (looks @ Wonko).
ugggghhhh
This is just…
It’s like the Padres are my favorite dog, my best friend, if you would…
and I don’t even know. It just makes me sad to see things related to Padre greatness come hurtling down to the ground and being dashed to pieces.
If the Dodgers really want to hurt us, they should sign Hoffman, AND bring THE Gwynn back as a bench coach or something…
It's like the NL West is trying to catch our 2010 lightning in a bottle.
Miggy to Vagiants, Garland and Skinny Gwynn to Doyers. What’s next, Scott Hairston to Dbags? Perdomo to LOLkies?
Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...

Interesting...
We send Adrian to Boston then use the money saved on an ex-Yankee. In your face, Boston! Need some ice for that burn?
"Well, it's just ineffable." "Oh, so I'm not 'F-able'?" "No, no, ineffable means it can't be explained." "So I'm stupid?"
That's really too bad.
But we can still watch him not hit anything when we play the Dodgers

I would've prefered to keep him as a backup
the dodgers will benefit from his defense

Meh.
I don’t imagine that he had too many offers. Perhaps this was his only one, or at least his most lucrative. Don’t fault a guy of that caliber for grabbing whatever work he can.
The Padres are good, but make no mistake: we've gotta beef up the linwup.

Kudos to the Padres

Chris Gwynn vs Anthony
Chris playing for LA was of no consequence, as he started there. It’s not like he started in SD then for some god-forsaken reason chose to go north to LA.
Besides, there could have been a bit of subliminal sibling rivalry between the brothers.
But Anthony going there… no. Anthony is the direct product of Tony Gwynn’s own, well, you know. And signing with LA would be like a proverbial kick to the same nuts that produced him.
The Lesser Gwynns
play for the Dodgers sometime or another.

I know I shouldn't care now that we have Maybin
but this still bothers me. It’s as if my son, who plays on my church-league fast pitch team, showed up to play for the United Methodists. God love him, he can’t hit to save his life, but it would make me a little ill to see him in that uniform.

Gwynn Jr. never really hated the Dodgers. He didn’t even have a favorite team, he was more of a fan of the game.

Had to happen
This is disappointing, but that truth is, we had no place for him. Maybin’s defense is almost as good, and Maybin has higher upside. Tony Gywnn is the perfect example of cliche number, I dont know, 26? “You can’t steal first.” We rely on speed and defense, as well as getting on base. Gywnn was masterful at the first two, but couldn’t figure out the third.
WTF
Couldn’t the Pads have afforded a 1yr $700k major league contract for the lesser of two Tony Gwynns? At the very least he’d give us defense and speed off the bench, and another year to assess his value to the organization. I have a feeling he’s going to be one of those guys who sucks it up against everyone else, but KILLS the Padres.

The Padres do not have the depth, ofroffensive fire power
that would justify keeping a feel good defensive specialist on the team.
Good point
but where is this depth and offensive fire power going to come from? I feel like Gwynn could still have played a role on this team, especially not knowing if Maybin will stay healthy.
by Natrone Means Business on Dec 8, 2010 3:29 PM PST up reply actions
I fail at proof reading.
I do not know where the fire power will come from, but I know that none of it would of come from Anthony.
I like this move
set aside the Gwynn sentiment and think this:
Late may in LA:
Donny Baseball, gets mad at Matt Kemp for not running out a comebacker to the pitcher, yanks him from the game.
Gwynn is put in as a replacement makes two gem of a defensive plays. Donny Baseball likes the hussle, gives most of the ABs for CF to Tony and his .234 average. Donny then platoons Kemp and Either in RF.
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
Not the most uplifting news...
But it’s not like it’s his father. Still sorry to see him go but Denorfia was a far better CF and overall player anyway. Sorry Tony…

Sorry but he was
Don’t get me wrong Jr was a good fielder and a good guy, but his hitting leaves MUCH to be desired. His father he’s not.
Denorfia was nowhere near the fielder that Gwynn was.
