Open Thread: Adrian Gonzalez Trade Watch 2010 - Day 2
Adrian and his agent are in Boston to discuss a new contract and take a physical. The trade is almost complete. I'm just waking up.
Dan Hayes from the North County Times seems to be breaking most of the news, check him for the latest info.

For any kind of short-term competition in the West, we’re utterly screwed. Long-term…..we’ll see what happens. I think it’s almost safe to say that Jed’s job is riding on how this one pans out (and the probable future trade of Latos, as well).
Can one of you guys fill me in on who Reymond Fuentes is? It’s kinda odd that I’ve read MLBTR for months leading up to this trade and I’ve never heard his name brought up.
by TheFan09 on Dec 4, 2010 7:48 AM PST reply actions 1 recs
By accepting it (and mainly the Padres' M.O.) now
It won’t sting as badly when he does leave. They’re all eventually going to leave, because we can’t afford to keep anyone around for the long-term. It’s a rather depressing life for fans, but to put out a semi-competitive profitable team at the lowest possible dollar, it’s great.
HOPEFULLY the sale of the team will be done by that time, and then we can bump up the payroll to a much more respectable number. But again, we will have to see because I don’t see them leaving this sort of model anytime soon.

Hi? What’s up Dave?
FWIW I don’t go on other sites and post links. I’m flattered anytime someone does or if I’m included on the GLB daily links, but just posting my own links is not my thing.

Are you kidding me? Even i’ve never heard Reymond Fuentes.

I saw that too...
Then I realized it’s probably written by a Sox fan.
What’s Baseball America got to say about these guys?
True, but
we still got the estimated #1, #3, and #17 (I think it was).
Although, honestly Kelly’s numbers did not impress me. He is young, and supposedly with really good stuff… but his numbers are not light’s out.
I'm hearing
Fuentes was #6 by baseball america this year

Kelly
The Red Sox have been VERY aggressive with promoting Kelly and Rizzo. Don’t look too much into last year with Kelly. The guy will own it in San Antonio this season.
The interview I did with soxprospects today was awesome, all three guys sound like high ceiling players. Not too bad when you consider we only traded one year of AG production, cleared some salary and have three guys that could all be starting on the team at one point.

Baseball America link for top Red Sox prospects
Kelly #1 Rizzo #3 Fuentes #6
Some questions: Kelly – numbers weren’t great last year at Double A and may have control issues. not another Poreda??
Rizzo – Left handed power hitter? Aren’t these the kind of players that Petco destroys?
Fuentes – Won’t be ready for awhile – We’ll be lucky if either him or Tate make it to the majors
makes me feel better though.
Fuentes is a good athlete. That’s what we need in Petco OF. Even if he hits .250, if his OBP is .340 and he plays great defense, he’s amazing.
I was just reading around
and I wonder if we might try to “flip” one of these prospects to the Nationals for one of their stud SS.
Apparently the Nationals have a couple of really good shortstops who are ready for the majors.
But that is probably wishful thinking.
This is what I just posted in the other thread:
So, here is what soxprospects.com has to say about each of them!
Casey Kelly:
Scouting Report: Athletic frame with smooth agility and a tremendous feel for pitching. Kelly was a two-way player in high school, excelling at both shortstop and as a pitcher. He was also a highly-touted quarterback recruit for Tennessee before signing with the Sox. Kelly split his first pro year in 2009 between pitching and hitting, showing elite pitching tools and mediocre offensive skills. In December 2009, Kelly made the decision to continue his career on the mound. Kelly’s pitching skills are quite advanced for his age, mixing in three plus pitches: a low 90s fastball, a hard 12-6 curveball, and a nice change. Early in his career, he demonstrated outstanding command, and control, but as his velocity has increased he has lost some touch on his fastball. Sound, smooth mechanics. Fastball has excellent downward movement, and generally sits between 90 and 93 mph, getting up to 96 mph on occasion. Many scouts project that he’ll sit in the 92-95 mph range after he fills out. Curveball has the potential to become a plus-plus wipeout pitch. It sits around 76-79 mph, but he tends to show it a little too much at times. Kelly’s changeup sits around 84 mph with a lot of sink. For the most part, he keeps the ball low in the zone, but he’s hittable when he leaves it up. He can also overuse his fastball. Very good mound presence. Kelly had the makings of an elite defensive shortstop before converting to pitching full time, so he should be an excellent pitcher defensively.Played for Portland (AA) in 2010, struck out 81 over 95ip.
Anthony Rizzo:
Scouting Report: Tough-as-nails first baseman with an excellent build. Solid overall approach at the plate, good eye, quick bat speed, impressive timing. Could stand to improve protecting the plate deeper in counts. Plus gap power to all fields. Has had some trouble with advanced breaking stuff. An excellent defender with a solid arm and surprising lateral quickness for his size. Outstanding instincts and fundamentals. Said to be a leader by example and a great teammate. Rizzo was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in May 2008. After receiving chemo-therapy during 2008, he was declared cancer-free in November 2008.Played for Salem (A) and Portland in 2010 (AA), hit .256 with 25 home runs and 10 stolen bases.
Reymond Fuentes:
Scouting Report: Athletic center fielder plays the game at full tilt, the type of player that will make a lot of highlight reels. Wiry frame. Line drive hitter, makes excellent contact, without a ton of present power. Should be a gap-to-gap hitter. Turns on inside pitches well. Excellent swing mechanics. Still working on pitch recognition. Plus plus speed. Excellent range and glove in the outfield, projects to stay in center. Solid instincts. Fluid, gets good jumps on the ball. Below average arm. Cousin of Carlos Beltran.
Played for Greenville (A) in 2010, hit .270 with 5 home runs and 42 stolen bases.
Honestly, I’m not completely okay with this trade. I’m kinda upset the Pads didn’t get a ML ready player in there as well. But, In Jed We Trust. Also, who’s going to play first this season? I don’t think Kyle’s going to be back until the all star break. Unless someone has heard anything about how he’s recovering from surgery. We haven’t heard about how it’s going for him, so I just assume it’ll be a while.

Knew it was coming...oh well
Not too upset with the trade. Everyone’s saying we’re getting the short end of the stick but I think it’s pretty decent considering Adrian could have just walked after next year.
If you look at our top 10 prospects now, it’s stacked. From Kelly / Castro to Rizzo / Tate to Decker and a few other solid players.
On the flip side, I’m actually very happy for Adrian. I hate the Red Sox but will definitely pull for him. It’s going to be fun to watch him get catapulted in mega star status hitting in Fenway for the Yankees.

A
There are a few things you should know: Those kids numbers may look unimpressive to you but this is the way the Red Sox develop their prospects: They challenge them against much older competition. For instance, The A+ and AA teams are the youngest in their respective leagues and the Low A club is the 2nd youngest!
Casey Kelly just destroyed Advanced A last year as a 19 years old teenager. This year he was the youngest starter in the Eastern League (AA) where he was facing batters with an average age of 24.3 years but improved his velocity and his change up is almost a finished offering: He’ll be a stud, now doubt in my mind.
As for Rizzo, look at this stat:
This is what Adrian Gonzalez did for the Portland Sea Dogs as a 20-year-old in 2002: .266/.344/.437/.781, 17 HR, 96 RBI, 138 games
This is what Anthony Rizzo did for the Portland Sea Dogs as a 20-year-old in 2010, following his early-season promotion from Hi-A Salem: .263/.334/.481/.815, 20 HR, 80 RBI in 107 games
Also he was voted the best defensive 1st baseman in the Eastern League in BA tool survey.
Fuentes: I’m not really high on him but he’s supposed to be a very rangy CFer with serious speed. If you have any questions, I’ll be glad to answer.

I'm not quite as negative as you mr. wonko
but I agree that none of these players sound like they are 2011 material… and maybe not 2012. But Latos also zipped up pretty quickly, so you never know.

A few things make me scratch my head on this...
1. How do the Padres trade Adrian to the redsox and not get Jose Iglesias? SS is a major need of this club they have little to nothing in their system.
2. Rizzo is good young 1B but what does this mean for Kyle Blanks? I know he is coming off od Tommy John but are the Padres already giving up on him?
3. This move literally filled zero of the Padres holes both from a major league and a farm system standpoint…
I'm puzzled by not including Iglesias either
I figured he would be a must for us.

Anyways, I’m glad that we will at least get something for Adrian rather than have him at 1B for 2011 just to watch him leave for a draft pick. But if he wins MVP and a World Series next year in a Red Sox uni, I will cry.

My guess is
We’ll sign a cheap 1B (LaRoche, Overbay) to fill the hole until Blanks recovers or, I’ve heard Blanks has made very quick progress on surgery, he could just be penciled in to start the year. 2B – could be Hudson, makes sense.

Antonelli played in one game in AAA last year and 59 the year before, I don’t think he will be seeing a major league field anytime soon.
I don't think he played AAA ball at all
Wasn’t it a rookie league game?
But yes, I agree, it would take a lot to get him back to major league ready

Best look at the three players coming
Rizzo and Kelly could be real difference makers starting in 2012 as both are on the meteor track to the bigs. Fuentes is probably 2-3 years away, probably enough time to pair him with Tate and Decker.
We definitely got two of the best prospects in their system and one high ceiling outfielder but yeah no middle infield help whatsoever. Basically the Padres could go into this season with Forsythe and Cabrera and 2B and SS, God help us all.

I'm OK with this
for a few reasons.
1) Adrian was gone. There’s just no debating that. People can do their “woe is us” bit about being a Padre fan, but that’s just the economics of the game. And, as I’m learning as a hockey fan, a hard cap doesn’t necessarily keep these scenarios from happening either. There’s just no way the Padres can afford a $18+ M per year player. Obviously we could have got more for him last year, but we were also in the process of compiling one of the best records in club history.
2) I trust Jed. He’s aggressive and he’s got a completely different approach than KT (think unproven/“busted” prospects instead of over-the-hill vets) that I think plays well to the park and the team’s economic reality. As has been said ad nauseum, Jed is familiar with their system so I trust him to make the right decisions here.
3) It’s December 4th, for god’s sake. There’s what, 100 days until the season begins? Who knows how things are going to play out. Jed may be getting certain guys here to flip in other deals, or he may already have some ideas how he’d like to spend the money we’re freeing up.;
At any rate, it’s just too early to analyze this trade. Talk to me again in two years, and I’ll let you know what I really think. That said, the last time we traded the franchise cornerstone guy, it worked out pretty f’ing well for us.

We need to sock the Sox for somebody who will add more value to this trade. Preferably a middle infielder.
Looks like Iglesias is off the table, and if they couldn’t get Lowrie in the initial trade, they won’t be able to now… well, darn.

Probably not worth it though
I assume his salary with be >$5. That would be $10M spent on one guy. Then you’re back trying to fill 2B, 1 SP, 1 backup C and a 1B with $7M. Plus, I don’t see him as a SS.

Not signing Karsten Whitson...
was the final proof I needed to conclude that this organization is too cheap to ever really compete. 17 teams paid over slot in the first round but not the Padres. We had the only non-injured player not to sign. Even when Whitson faxed the 2.7 million offer with 15 minutes to go, why not at least counter with a face saving offer – even if only at 2.2 million (up from 2.1). “The Padres had a verbal deal with Whitson”—gimme a break! There is no deal until the terms are written out and signatures are on the paper.
Whitson would have been a nice trade bargaining chip to prevent the September collapse. Let’s face it, Whitson probably made the right choice long term. The Padres wouldn’t pay him now, and they were not going to pay him later. He will get a big bonus in 3 years and be in the majors in 5.
Now Adrian joins the list of superstars the Padres have let go. One game away from making the playoffs and we decide to dump out best player who is under contract. No other organization would make this move.
I still think not signing Whitson is a good deal since the 2011 draft is so much deeper.

Trade only makes sense if AG's injury
was going to keep him out April and May. AG wasn’t going to re-sign with Padres, but that’s largely the result of how he’s been shopped around the past two years. If the Padres had treated him like the face of the franchise (e.g. Chipper Jones in Atlanta) things would be different.
we couldn't afford him

I honestly have no idea. It will not be Vitek, I know that.

Also
It would make sense that the PTBNL player is a 2010 draft pick since you can’t trade those players yet. However, that would be a little odd since Hoyer is supposed to know the Sox system so well, but that player wouldn’t have been a part of the system yet.

Wonko
It is someone off the 40 man roster b/c of the Rule 5 draft coming up.
They have to wait until that is over before they can hand the player over. That’s the argument that I have heard, and it makes the most sense.
Interesting
A pitcher off the 40 man roster. The chances of that being a bad player is slim. Very interesting.

I don't mean to be a bitter, jaded, and cynical bastard
but, haven’t we seen this movie before? We can’t pay our big-time players, so we deal them for prospects, deal with 2-4 years of shitty ball, then have a breakout year or two, then we encounter the same roadblock.
the perception of the Padres, even more clearly now, is that we’re a stepping stone, a AAA team in a major league setting.

The key that has always been missing
Is producing our own prospects. Until that happens, the cycle has a lot of peaks and valleys. If we ever start producing our own talent to supplement what we get back in trade, then we’ll be more stable (barring major injuries and such).

From about 1990 through 2005, we basically treated the draft and the minor leagues like they were an inconvenience not to be bothered with.

We did snag Peavy in 1999, but the rest was a dunghill
And 2004 was just another example of cheaping out and going with Matt F*cking Bush instead of a more costly and major-league ready guy. Best thing to come out of that nightmare of a draft was Blanks.

There are a bunch of drafts that resulted in absolutely nothing where other teams at least get a role player or relief pitcher or something.

get over the draft pick. This isn’t the Chargers ownership, which has done horrible horrible things with players to save a few bucks.
yes, they make the playoffs most/every year… but no championship.

ok,
time for some hard, cruel reality… or whatever the heck it was you said earlier.
We are going to be not very good for the next 2 years. I am okay with that since it looks like we have a chance to be VERY good in 2013-2014.
With Latos, Richard, Casey, and Castro, and Luebke/Stauffer/others… under control (Stauffer’s injury has given us more time to control him) through that period, if half of them pitch like their potential hints at… We could have 2 legitimate aces anchoring a staff with nothing worse than a #4 pitcher.
Add in something else useful… one of these two prospects, maybe someone from our farm system… maybe a trade for Bell/Adams, and we could be looking at a solid team.
But it is a risk, but it is Hoyer’s to take.
So, we need to suck it up for two years and hope our players stay healthy.
I don't think we necessarily have to suck it up for 2 years
We have something like $13 million left to spend. Spend that wisely and have players build on their 2010 seasons and there’s a gleam men.

You will love Rizzo and Kelly...
…but Fuentes is more of a wildcard.
Look, there are some Sox fans who are seriously disappointed that the Sox didn’t keep Rizzo and Kelly. They attend Sea Dog games and fall in love with the prospects. Some wanted to watch “the kids” grow up, and they are very, very high on Rizzo and Kelly. Unfortunately, most Sox fans are impatient. They want to win now, and thus, they are enthusiastically welcoming this trade. But, even the “win now” crowd valued Rizzo and Kelly, as did the Boston press. I don’t think you lost your guy for a bag of balls.
A wildcard you say…
Should we be worried?
"Well, it's just ineffable." "Oh, so I'm not 'F-able'?" "No, no, ineffable means it can't be explained." "So I'm stupid?"
Nah, he's more raw potential right now...
…still working on plate discipline and putting together a consistent swing. But Rizzo…. That guy came out of nowhere to jump ahead of Lars Anderson as the Sox’ top first base prospect. Part of it was the cancer stuff, but until last year, Rizzo wasn’t considered one of the organization’s top prospects. Then, he just put it together and started rocketing up the ladder. He’s a beast — not clear if he will match A-Gon, though. Maybe a cheap, cost-controlled A-Gon. Also, no one rehabs cancer survivors like the Sox — first Lester and now Rizzo!
Mixed feelings
I was in favor of trading A-Gon this offseason, but I really wanted a SS prospect (or Lowrie) in return.
If you look at the haul in a little less subjective, pure value based manner it’s pretty fair. Using this research I put our return value at something like 33.5M.
Kelly = top 50 pitching prospect = 15.5M
Rizzo= at least 75-100 hitting prospect once BA list comes out = 12.5M
Fuentes= B prospect = 5.5M
Plus the value of the ptbnl
Where market value of one year of Adrian is about $25M + $5M from type A comp picks – his $6.3M salary ends up about 23.7M. The comp pick figure is from some other article I remember reading where they looked at the average $ value returned by picks in that area of draft in their careers #15-round 1B.
When you factor in the fact that he’s Adrian and Boston can negotiate the contract extension it makes it pretty even overall.
Though I still feel like getting a SS was crucial. If it was Iglesias or even Lowrie instead of Rizzo I’d be stoked on this trade. Right now I’m kinda like meh I guess it’s fine.
by Antonio Olivares on Dec 4, 2010 2:14 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
Eh, Lowrie's not a sure thing....
…poor guy has been injury prone and has never consistently stayed on the field. First it was his wrist, then it was mono. He’s kind-of like a poor-man’s Nick Johnson, except he’s a far more versatile fielder.
Yeah
But our current alternative is Everth Cabrera, and after him we have no viable SS prospects in the organization. Maybe Cumberland takes lessons from Omar Vizquel (or Jose Iglesias!) and ends up sticking at the position, though his injury luck is probably worse than Lowrie’s.

Trade for Brendan Ryan. Sign Orlando Hudson. Re-sign Jairston. Sign Laird or whoever as backup C.

Well if it you don't like that scenario
How about trade for Bartlett at SS, sign Mora at 2B. With Mora’s ability to play multiple positions he could be a mid-season trade candidate if we have an in house solution like Everth figure it out.
I’m not sure just how high the Rays asking price is for Bartlett. A year ago they gave Iwamura to the Pirates for the uninspiring reliever Jesse Chavez, who is maybe the equivalent of Adam Russell.
Production:Cost wise Bartlett and Iwamura are about the same. Though Bartlett does have that one big all star season.

I know we were losing Bell, Adrian, Ludwick in 2012 no matter what, but the rest of the team would stay intact.
I figure we will start to add some players from the farm then. Castro looks like he’ll be a good contribution, Gomes, Scribner, maybe Brach and Musgrave. I figure at least one of Darnell, Forsythe, Cunningham or Cumberland will pan out. Hefner has possibilities. Jaff should be a mid-season or September call up in 2012. Figueroa is another guy I really like that could maybe contribute at some point in that season.
Plus I always assumed we’d get prospects back for Adrian and eventually for Heath that will help us compete then too. Though I was assuming and hoping that a SS would be among those prospects returned.

"Plus I always assumed we’d get prospects back for Adrian and eventually for Heath that will help us compete then too."
Me too, but wouldn’t that assumption preclude that they’d be established in majors before 2012? That doesn’t appear anymore like it’ll be the case. I don’t see enough available in 2012 as we stand right now to make us a contender. 2013 seems more like the open window now.
Not that we couldn’t, but I’m thinking in “likely” scenarios, not best case.
The National League West title was all but a lock,
Then they lost 10 in a row, ‘twas like a punch in the jock!
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
I agree with 2013
based on our stud SP prospects.
Castro and Kelly, if they pan out would be an amazing addition. Even if only one reaches what is expected, if the other slots into a #4, that would be a great addition with what we have.
The only problem with 2013
Is that we’ll be paying higher prices for a few of our current players. And, other than Latos, none are all star level players. That could be a problem if the lack of enthusiasm for the team keeps ticket sales down. We’d have difficulty filling in the holes, just like we are having right now. We’d be very reliant on a lot of players who debut from 2011-2013 to fill starting roles.
The National League West title was all but a lock,
Then they lost 10 in a row, ‘twas like a punch in the jock!
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
Yeah, but I don't think 2012 is reasonable
to expect Castro, etc… to be really good.
Maybe good, everyday players, but not light’s out good.
Unless you think one or more are ready to be called up mid 2011, and then they don’t slump 2012.
I wasn't making the argument for 2012 either.
I was just playing devil’s advocate on 2013. And I’m not really sure why I was.
The National League West title was all but a lock,
Then they lost 10 in a row, ‘twas like a punch in the jock!
Bolts from the Blue - General Manager: It is what it isn't
The fact is
If we are going to compete with our payroll every year we are going to have to rely on guys that debuted within the last 2-3 years to fill starting roles.
I’d say we have a solid top 15 farm system now with the 3 new additions. Combine that with the 5 early picks next year and hopefully we can keep a steady stream of big league talent coming.
That’s another thing I wonder, does having the 5 early picks next year place tighter restrictions on our opening day payroll?
by Antonio Olivares on Dec 4, 2010 4:33 PM PST up reply actions
If one assumes that team finances are a zero sum game,
then the money would probably come from the payroll pool.
I still think we'd have a chance in 2012
Certainly in 2013 we’d have more guys established and a better shot, but I think we could realistically make a run in 2012.
There’s a good chance Blanks or Rizzo or a combo of the two can be a productive first basemen.
There’s a good chance that someone can be a productive second baseman from Forsythe, Cumberland, Everth, Hoffpauir, or even Figueroa.
Latos, Richard, Stauffer, Luebke will be established with Castro/Kelly/Hefner for the 5th spot. The rotation should be better than last year. Bullpen should be very good still.
I could see the club needing just an outfielder and a SS, plus maybe some other position that doesn’t pan out. We’ll have more money to spend the offseason prior to 2012 with fewer holes to fill.
Obviously a lot could go wrong between now and then, but I could foresee the Padres having a very good shot at competing in 2012 and only getting stronger in the years following that.

About the rule 5 draft:
“A fourth prospect is rumored to be heading to San Diego, as well. Because minor league rosters are frozen due to the impending Rule 5 draft this week, non-40-man-roster prospects cannot be moved until after it concludes. If a player like Britton heads to San Diego, it will significantly improve the haul for the organization. "

Just throwing out some ideas now...
So according to Wonko’s 2011 roster outlook we had around 8 million to spend before trading Adrian. Now we can throw his 6.5 million onto the pile. That’s 14.5 million. So what if we dealt Ludwick for the best shortstop we could get and put Cunningham out there? That adds 7 million for a total of 21.5 million possible free agent dollars. And that’s just assuming a payroll of exactly 40 million dollars. It could be more.
I think a change of strategy is in order. I say we sign near elite free agents to short term contracts and deal them when our prospects are ready. We should be aggressive this off season and sign a marquee type player who can float the franchise until the prospects are ready.
So, what about Paul Konerko? He’s a little older (34) but he’s coming of a monster offensive year (.312/.393/.584). How much do you think he’d make? I think he made 13 million in 2010 so I guess that’s a starting point. I’ve heard he wants to be close to his Arizona home and is looking to play in the west. Maybe a 3/40 deal? If we can keep it to around 13 million in year 1 there’s still 8.5 million to go after Hudson with.

The Red Sox couldn’t clear the final hurdle necessary to bring the power bat of Adrian Gonzalez to Boston, at least for now. After agreeing in principle with the Padres on what would have been a blockbuster deal, the Red Sox and Gonzalez couldn’t reach agreement on a contract extension on Sunday.
Gonzalez’s agent, John Boggs, told AOL FanHouse’s Tom Krasovic, “All I can say is, it was very disappointing it could not work out. We’re very busy at this point.”
MLB.com columnist and MLB Network analyst Peter Gammons added via Twitter that the deal is “Off, but not entirely.”

Sure, we could get prospects for him from just about any team, but I don’t think we’ll find any willing suitors. And that means watching him ride out of town for free at the end of the year, or much more cheaply at the deadline.

I love Adrian and everything,
but I’m a bit ticked that he couldn’t agree to a deal with his dream team. I’m not sure I want him playing as a lame duck on this team all year after this. I think he and Boggs badly overplayed their hand here.

I read that they will have a payroll of only 63m for the 2012 season after Fuko and some others come off the books. So concievably they could afford the contract long term. Although it was KT who was working out a deal with Peavy to go there I remember them having Vitters as a nice 3B centerpiece then. Hoyer will go into Winter Meetings looking to deal Gonzilla for sure

Do they have any good prospects that we want?

They can’t go back on it if they don’t work out an extension?
Or we’re just in a wait and see mode?

if thats what he is getting paid
then according to the league and the market and the way baseball works, that is what he is worth.
thats the nature of the game. i dont understand what is so difficult for everyone to understand about this.
the system isnt perfect, i agree. there should be a hard cap. but there isnt, this is the game and there is no use bitching about it.

I'll put "worth" in quotes next time to clear things up for you.
The overwhelming reaction from writers and league GMs is that it is extremely stupid to pay an injury-prone guy with mediocre road splits $126 million for his age 32-38 seasons.
I’m well-aware that that’s what in fact happened in this case.
totally agree
these a-holes sign these monster deals (Ziiiiiiiiiiiiitooooooooooo) and it drives the market value of EVERY player up. bad times.

oh dude i know its completely insane, and i don't agree with it one bit
but unfortunately thats kinda how it is. i think its completely insane.
i also think baseball needs a hard cap, because its getting ridiculous. but until then, we have to unfortunately play in the system that exists.

for MLB, it's like the Stockholm syndrome
Abused small market teams get tens of millions of dollars and are extremely profitable.
These abused teams funnel their top players to large market teams for almost nothing in return.
Large market teams are angry at having to finance the small market teams, but rely on them for talent.
Football got it right, but I don;t know if the Padres would spend 100 mil on payroll if that was the cap. They are completely structured on abusing the current system.

On the bright side
we did bring in Maybin and Harangutan, and we’ve got about $13M to spend in free-agency. Part of that will go to a first-base patchjob (Overbay?) and part will go to middle-infield help (hopefully Orlando Hudson). That leaves us with enough room to do a bit more fiddling around with the roster if need be.
The Padres are good, but make no mistake: we've gotta beef up the linwup.

But we’ll be better than we would have been come 2012 or 13. Plus we just gutted three of the top 6 prospects from Theo’s system. That’s got to make anyone feel good.

Not when this year is a bust
and there’s still alot of questions to be answered about the Padres. No middle infielders, uncertainty about the outfield, the catching position and with prospects that have alot of questions about them (Kelly if he’s for real, rizzo’s health, Fuentes if he’s anything at all)

Let's just wait a bit on this
I’m sad Agon’s left, but he wasn’t going to stay. And I agree with what seems to be Hoyer’s strategy – that when you trade for prospects, you try and get the best prospects possible (just like drafting).
Yes we have lots of holes, but we’re still a long way from the season, and I’m a bit sick of all the premature busting. I for one, wouldn’t be surprised if we try and trade some of these prospects before the season begins, or before they fully mature, to get some other excellent prospects better suited to our needs.

This year isn't a bust yet. Jed must have a master plan.
Since Agone’s salary will go to Ludwick, and Moorad will still scrimp on the payroll to use the operating income to pay down the debt, Jed will probably put Baxter at 1B until Blanks is ready, have Hoffpauir take J.Hairston’s place at UT, Put Everth at 2B and put Denorfia at SS. When the Savior wins #2 mil in arbitration, he’ll be traded for another Mujica, and they’ll bring up Darnell. They’ll have another competition for the 5th starter in ST, and put LeBlanc or Luebke there, with the loser replacing Stauffer and long man/spot starter. Voila! Another 90 win season!

I must say
This image is not posted enough…. It’s hilarious… it looks very real. Actually, it looks disgusting, but once you get over the red-colored syrup, it’s a perfect symbol.
What part of "the Plan" bothers you?
Is it Denorfia at SS? Well, Bud thought Norf could play center, so it’s only a short stretch for him to think he can play short. The 90 wins is possible, because last year’s predicted-70-wins team showed you don’t need stars to play fundamentally sound team baseball. And fundamentally sound TEAM baseball wins games, lots of ’em.
by wegotballsley on Dec 6, 2010 11:40 AM PST up reply actions
Lots of bits
Denorf at SS is plausible but odd, I dunnot if Cabrera can hit well enough to justify starting him out of position, I don’t think Hoffpauir has a place on an MLB roster, I don’t want to see Headley ride out of town for “another Mujica” and Darnell to take his place, and I think we could be better served playing somebody not named Mike Baxter at first. That’s about it, I guess.

I felt good about last year - with the strong finish of the 09 season.
Yes the pitching should be tight, but the team is all blowed up.
There is no mojo to get jacked up about. We’ve got dick – no 1B, 2B or SS. The outfield is AA at best.
This will be a tough year – 40 mil doesn’t buy shit.
If the Padres perform, Jed is a genius.

First off, I just wanted to say how much I love San Diego
and especially GLB, you guys are hilarious, and you generally make me feel welcome here, which is more than I get from a lot of sites here (Looking at you South Side Sox). That being said, I’m honestly hoping Kelly turns into the Second Coming of Pedro for you guys, and Rizzo turns into the next Adrian. I love the Padres, and try to make my way out there during the spring to get out of the cold and watch some baseball.
Watching SD and Boston deal feels like a win-win for me, although I’m sure most of you don’t share the sentiment. Not only do I get to see Adrian in Boston, but I get to watch two of my favorite minor league players grow up on a team I actually like.
Hopefully we do the same thing next year with Headley, I’m thinking Jose Iglesias and Will Middlebrooks. (Mostly joking)
Keep on rocking, San Diego.

I've said it here before
2004 was a great thing to happen for the Sox, but a bad thing to happen for baseball in general. It brought a significant number of jerks out of the woodwork who don’t actually know a thing about the sport, refuse any opportunity to learn about the inner workings and economics of baseball, and who just want to see Boston with the best players winning year after year. We have a term for these people at OTM, “pinkhats” we call them. Most of the real Boston fans attempt to be enlightened about the economics and networking of baseball.
San Diego is given a tough situation to work with, and that you guys can be competitive every three years is honestly impressive to me. It says a lot about what your organization and the previous regime have done there. Having a new ownership should help a bit, and I definitely hope you guys become the Rays of the NL, while keeping your quirky San Diego charm of course.
Here’s to seeing Rizzo destroy some Giants pitching within the next few years, and to watching Kelly dismantle the Dodgers right along with him. You can bet I’m rooting for you, so long as you’re not playing Boston.

I most definitely agree.
When John Henry owns the Sox, Liverpool, and a Racing team and can still field competitive teams with his money, then MLB needs to step in and make sure everyone else can afford at least their MLB teams.
