Heath Bell discussed in Red Sox talks for Adrian Gonzalez, Cubs also interested in Gonzalez
Looks like there are other interested parties involved in this Adrian Gonzalez trade.
Oh this is endearing, Adrian would prefer to be traded to Boston.
if adrian gonzalez is traded, he hopes its boston, i hear. could have something to do with their ability to win & to give him teixiera deal
I think if I was one of these teams I'd be concerned that Gonzalez still is 4 months away from being able to swing a bat due to his recent shoulder surgery. As a Padres fan I'm worried that it could affect his trade value, hopefully interested teams can overlook that risk.
And we could lose Heath Bell too:
Heard this: The Padres and Red Sox are making progress in Adrian Gonzalez talks. If completed, this would take Boston out of the Adrian Beltre talks. Also: One of the possible combos discussed, among many, has included Heath Bell going to Boston.
UPDATE: Okay Heath Bell is not part of the deal.
Just was told #Padres-#RedSox deal would only involve Adrian Gonzalez and is "close." No Heath Bell. #MLB
UPDATE:
Source: #Padres "absolutely" will trade Heath Bell. One yr left in arb, $4M last yr. FA closers avail include Soriano, Jenks. Teams with poss interest in #Padres' Bell: #WhiteSox, #Angels, #Rangers, #Marlins, #Cardinals, #BlueJays, #Rays. Affordable for 1 yr. #MLB #MLB

I still think there's a chance that with the money saved we could compete in 2011
You’d have to use a bunch of it to get productive players at 2B and SS. The easier route to get that started is to sign Orando Hudson. I don’t think you could risk Blanks playing first so you’d probably want to find a productive, but less than elite (so you can afford him) 1B. Something like Adam LaRoche, Derrek Lee or Carlos Pena. You’d need to get a catcher that isn’t going to be below replacement level to backup Hundley. Russell Martin would do that trick, but he’s going to be bid on pretty highly. And lastly you’d need a Garland-esque or better pitcher for the last spot in the rotation. It’s not going to be easy, but it was going to be hard to fill all those spots while still paying Adrian and Bell anyway.
Oh, and no one (I’m looking at you Richard, Latos, Stauffer, Adams, Gregerson, Venable, Headley and Hundley) can regress or get hurt. Maybe Venable since Denorf and Cunningham might be good enough fill-ins.
Or you could count on those guys not regressing/getting hurt and bank on Blanks, Castro, Luebke, a couple of relievers and Cameron Maybin all simultaneously having break out years. It would still help though if you signed Hudson and got a SS though.

You make a few good points
Laird is a likely pickup as cheap and a strictly backup catcher. You have Harang who has been a good innings eater when he’s healthy, but the question is whether he’s effective or not. Hudson would be a good pick up but I wonder where he’d fit in the line up, as a lead off person perhaps?
Blanks its been said will start in AAA and have to regain his confidence and re-proove himself

What about if Lowrie is in the A-Gon deal?
With Iglesias as their short stop of the future and Scutaro for this year I could see Lowrie being in an Adrian deal.
Which means the Padres could field a team of
Lowrie SS
Hudson 2B
Overbay(?) 1B
Headley
Venable
Maybin
Ludwick
Hundley
Bench of Denorfia, Jairston, Salazar/Cunningham, Baxter, Laird
Rotation of Latos, Richard, Stauffer, Harang, Luebke
Bullpen of Bell, Adams, Gregerson, Frieri, Thatcher, Russell, Gomes/Scribner
Plus a couple guys that would be in AAA that could maybe start if someone got injured like LeBlanc, Inman, Hefner later in the season.
Payroll for that team would probably be a little under 45M. I could see that team winning 85-90 games and competing for the division.

According to NCT's Dan Hayes
Lowrie is not in the deal.
Casey Keely is definitely in though.

If Lowrie isn't in the deal it's a sure bet Iglesias is.
Adrian makes Rizzo expendable and everyone’s mentioning Kelly in the deal. So it’s looking like a minimum of Kelly, Rizzo and Iglesias at this point. I think that’s a fair assumption.

If all you need is a fill-in at first base, the cheapest guy available is
already on the 40-man roster. Mike Baxter played first and OF last year at Portland. You can’t get any cheaper than major league minimum, and I wouldn’t be surprised if meddling miser Moorad mentioned Mike to Jed already.

I get the feeling based on the rumors
He is going to “lose” up front. This deal will take years to sort out.

Over the Monster is saying it is only 3 prospects
and none are major league ready. I think the combo of the shoulder surgery and only 1 year left on his ridiculously cheap deal are hurting trade value. If they wait a year, they can sign him as a FA. I hope this deal happens closer to the season, when his rehab is farther along. I am OK with trading him now, it is time to pull the trigger. They need to get good value though.
Everyone is speculating as to who might be involved.
I highly doubt that any of the people speculating have any real inside info.
What do the Cubs
even have to offer anyways? Seems like an empty rumor to me…

Cubs
Actually have a fair amount of power arms in the minors and quality up the middle talent. What the Cubs lack right now are corner power guys, but the system has a decent top shelf (Brett Jackson/Chris Archer/Kenneth McNutt should all be top 75 prospects, and at least 1 or 2 of them might be top 50 prospects for several lists) and very solid depth.

I can live with saying goodbye to Agon,
But really don’t want Bell to be traded. I know there are good reasons, but he clearly wants to stay, is even happy to take less, seems like a good-to-great clubhouse leader, and all the rest of it.
So while I don’t like it when fans resort to blackmail, I’m going out on a limb and declaring that I’m not buying season tickets for 2011 if we trade Bell!

Not to mention he's our only star
And if we ever want to get fans in, make money, and increase payroll, it might help to have someone people recognize. Just maybe. I don’t know if that theory has ever worked before. Who are the Padres again?
Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.
So if it's Kelly, Rizzo, Iglesias
That means we can add Adrian’s 6 million to the free agent cash pile to sign Orlando Hudson. We should have enough money on hand to make a competetive offer. So next years team looks like this:
1. CF Cameron Maybin
2. 2nd Orlando Hudson
3. RF Ryan Ludwick
4. C Nick Hundley
5. LF William Venable
6. 1B Anthony Rizzo
7. 3rd Chase Headley
8. SS Jose Iglesias
9. Pitcher
Well, we don’t know how the offense will stack up but it looks like a pretty damn good defensive ballclub.

We had Headley batting cleanup for awhile. I'll take Nick in that spot over him.
Whoever bats 4th next year is only keeping the spot warm for either Venable or Rizzo. I don’t think realistically there’s anyone else besides those three that could conceivably bat cleanup at some point. Venable would need to prove he can handle it and I don’t want Rizzo under that kind of pressure. We made that mistake with Blanks, let’s not repeat it with Rizzo.

Just because Headley batted cleanup
it doesn’t mean we can replace him with another turd. Headley had no business there to begin with.

It's tough to compete with a 40 million dollar payroll, period.
Its tough to even field a team on that money.

ESPN says its a done deal pending a physical, which AGON is scheduled to take today in Boston (having already flown out there).
Three prospects...
ugh…
Anyone know how “prospect” and how “proven” the three players are?
“In exchange, the Padres would receive three prospects in pitcher Casey Kelly, first baseman Anthony Rizzo and outfielder Reymond Fuentes, a baseball source told ESPNBoston.com’s Gordon Edes.”
