Aaron Harang joining the San Diego Padres
A little birdy has been the source of the rumor flying around the blogosphere that the Aaron Harang deal is very close, if not already done. Which reminds me that I need to check my email more often or at least check Wikipedia, which has already changed his team status.
Also, Harang sucked last year. But maybe that was just because of his back injury, so he might pitch well again. BUT maybe his back injury will never heal! Nobody knows.
UPDATE:
Padres on verge of contract with Aaron Harang
"PETCO is one of the very few stadiums left in the league that you can consider to be a true pitcher's park," Harang said. "Most of the other parks are geared toward hitters.
"But as a San Diego guy, you always think of playing for your hometown team. It would be a cool experience."

In honor of the (possible) acquisition, I'm going to post as many goofy Harang pictures as I can find (should be easy, there are tons)

Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...
I know that that is his daughter...but I don't like the look in those eyes...

I guess it might not be so bad if it's on the cheap. He'd fall into the #4 spot in the rotation, right?
1-Latos
2-Richard
3-Stauffer
4-Harang

I like it
I bet it’s cheaper than Garland’s contract from last year, and I bet he pitches at least as well as Garland did.

Reds fan here
I’m happy that Harang gets to go home. He seems to be a family man, and I’m sure he will be happy in California. He was a bright spot for us in some dark times, he was probably the only bright spot of 2007. Yet sadly when the Reds were ready to rock n roll he wasn’t.
Ironically it was in San Diego that many of us trace the beginning of his demise. It was in this Sunday afternoon game he dutifully threw 60 pitches in relief. He pitched the Friday before and he pitched for days later. He made a slew of terrible starts after that disaster and was rocked in most of them. He ended up going on the DL with a sore elbow. He came back with mixed results.
He was pretty average in 2009, he missed the last 6 weeks of the season with an appendectomy. He started out 2009 pretty well, but after a long rain delay, and with 2 outs in the 5th Dusty let Harang return, despite having thrown 90+ pitches before the delay, to record the final out of the 5th so he could get the all important win.
Last year was just terrible. He never looked comfortable, he never really found a grove. I don’t know if it was his back or if he is losing it. It was tough at the end.
At any rate I wish Harang the best. I hope he doesn’t start against the Reds as I don’t want to root against him. While I don’t think he will return to his 2005-2007 form, if he can just pitch like he did in 2009, that would be a huge step up.

I always loved it when the Padres faced Harang
He would give up a few tape measure shots and be good for at least 5 to 6 earnies.
If he was always good for that
I wonder how he ended up with a 4.11 ERA against us.

well, maybe not always rather most of the time
he had one good start against Pads 3 years ago in which he went the distance giving up only one run, hence the ERA of 4.11
quick perusal – 1 good start and 1 good relief appearance out of 7 or 8 appearances and 6 or 7 homeruns allowed
but, still like the signing
cheap and wouldn’t be surprised if he has as good a year (2011) as Garland.
5 homeruns in 65.2 innings

not bad by Harang standards
those 5 blasts have came in last 2 to 3 years. 2005-2007 he pitched well vs. the Padres. Obviously, worth the minimal risk in the hope that he reverts back to 2007 form, Maybe coming home will help. One thing I do like, he is around the plate – doesn’t walk many -
Doesn't need to be 2007 form.
Just 2008-2009 form. And the change in ballpark will help cut down the homers.

also, NL West park numbers pretty good
over his career, Harang has pitched well in NL West parks in decent amount of innings. ERA is over 4 only at (of course) Coors and Chavez Ravine.
Harang's peripherals have always been better than his ERA.
Over the last few years he was somehow never able to get past bad BABIP luck. For a flyball pitcher like him, Petco maybe just the place.

What was the clincher?
Aaron, in my making your decision to sign the Padres, did you agree to the $25 gift card to Boll Weevil as your salary or your signing bonus which is a personal tour of the underground tunnel linking San Ysidro and Mexico?
25 bucks at Boll Weevil is way too much.
I think a 20 dollar iTunes card is more in our budget

I figured it would be a "buy 9 subs, get the 10th free" card with seven punches already filled out

No Way!
Heath’s been working hard on that card. Can’t just take that away from him just yet. Unless he’s dealt, then the card stays.

That's the way Jed rolls
He’ll wait until Heath buys that 9th sub, then flip him to some other team for some players willing to fight over that free sub. :-p

I want to see him pitch for us. He has great potential to help us win games and won’t cost us an arm and a leg.

Another Reds fan here
Seems like Justin already covered what’s to be said, but I certainly hope Harang can get a little closer to how he used to be.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
i was at that game
i think that game is an example of why Harang has fallen off. The Reds rode Harang pretty hard and between 2005 and 2007 he made several starts where he threw well over 120 pitches. He also threw a 10 inning game in 2007.
In the game linked by abara, Harang rebounded after that homerun, and didn’t give up another run threw the 7th inning. Dusty let him go out for the 8th despite the fact that Harang was well over 100 pitches, Harang gave up 2 runs without recording an out and his pitch count ran up to 120 for the game.
Harang’s next start against the Cubs he made it threw the 7th and he had allowed 3 runs (all on a home run in the 2nd). Again he was over 100 pitches after 7 innings, again Dusty let him go out in the 8th and he gave up a run and record one out before he was lifted, and he ran his pitch count up to 114. These weren’t the only two times this happened with Harang. Both times it was so stupid, it was obvious he was tired when he started the 8th in both games, yet he was given enough rope to hang himself.
