PADRES: Team declines 2011 option on oft-injured Young

PADRES: Moorad buys Padres' Triple-A team, plans temporary move to Tucson
"This is a better financial deal for the Padres," Storm president Dave Oster said. "One year in Lake Elsinore would have been OK. We would have gotten through it. But if the stadium issue in Escondido drags out to two years, there would have been bigger issues." -

Schrodinger’s Cat and Adrian Gonzalez
"Unlike Schrodinger’s cat, which had a 50/50 chance of living in his thought experiment, I firmly believe Adrian Gonzalez has a 0/100 chance of staying with the San Diego Padres beyond his current contract. This kitty’s gonna get gassed."

With CY probably gone and Garland for sure gone
That leavies us a little thin at SP. What’s everyone’s take on Simon Castro? I’ve only seen him actually pitch once during the futures game in which he looked pretty awful but he’s supposed to be pretty good.
Any chance he dazzles in spring training and earns a spot? I’m assuming he’ll most likely be a Sep call up next year.

Losing Young isn't much of a loss
He was great once but he’s too much of an injury liability now. Garland on the other hand is a little more worrisome. It’s always nice to have a veteran pitcher who can still pitch on your staff if the rest are fairly young guys.
Castro needs at least another season of seasoning
He has had a lot of trouble going more than 5 innings in games. A year in San Antonio or Tucson will do him good.
Jed will sign one or two starters, Luebke will get a shot and LeBlanc will provide depth.
No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

I have a feeling the Tucson move will be permanent
Escondido is quickly unraveling as the public is finding out it would tie up that city’s redevelopment funds for much of the next decade while giving the Padres and the AAA all the profits. It’s a bad deal for Escondido. Meanwhile in Tucson they’d be playing in an already existing stadium that was only built in 1998 to serve as the home of 2 MLB teams during spring training. It’s a great venue and needs a tenant since the White Sox and Diamondbacks moved closer to the rest of the teams up near Phoenix. Plus it’s not THAT far from San Diego (certainly closer than Portland).
Big question I have is, what will they call the Tucson AAA team since it obviously won’t be the Portland Beavers? Will they go with the old Tucson PCL team name of Sidewinders or will they go with something else like the GBL team’s name of Toros?
You may be on to something there.
In today’s NC times they pointed out that two of the ballpark’s biggest proponents were voted off the council, on Tuesday.
True, but they were voted out mainly on unrelated issues
The biggest thing that could stop Escondido is if they delay the ballpark vote scheduled on Nov 30th until after the new council members are seated. Moorad has said he wants it to be unanimous which it would not be with the new members on the council. Frankly I hope it doesn’t pass. It’s a very bad deal for Escondido, and it puts a AAA team right smack in the middle of the Padres territory (and they’re not exactly tearing it up at the gates at PETCO Park already). Plus it puts the AAA team in fairly close proximity to the very well run Single A team in Lake Elsinore. I’d hate to see the Storm outfit take any kind of hit at the expense of another team.
I'm going to miss the giant
if/when he doesn’t come back

1360 is saying he's not discounted the idea of coming back at less money
I think Young realizes he was grossly overpaid for what he did and is capable of doing post injury.
Offer an incentive laden low base salary contract
He takes it, great.
He doesn’t, nice having you here CY

I'd love to have him back
If he’s healthy (and at a lesser price obviously), he’s probably better than anything else we’ll get in the free-agent market this off-season.
