Commentary: Garland, Torrealba decisions raise questions about Padres direction - SignOnSanDiego.com
"Still, both Garland and Torrealba questioned the direction of the Padres in the final weeks of the regular season. Not the direction offered by Padres manager Bud Black or general manager Jed Hoyer mind you -- rather the direction of Padres ownership." -

As GM Jed Hoyer and his staff prepare to head to the Winter Meetings, which begin Monday in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., they will do so with the understanding that the Padres -- who had the second-lowest payroll in baseball in 2010 -- will again mostly watch the proceedings instead of being an active participant.

The Sacrifice Bunt " BABIP at PETCO
PETCO has always been a park that punishes hitters. Despite the siren song of its mammoth gaps, the ball just doesn’t land here in San Diego and this is reflected in the stadium’s BABIP.
Dodgers sign Jon Garland and Juan Uribe :: Friar Forecast
"As for the move, it’s a decent one, at best, for the Dodgers. Garland had a nice enough season last year, and he’s been a consistent performer in the past, but he’s certainly not the type of guy you’d project highly going forward. "

Has anyone done research on potential middle infielders or catchers available in the Rule V?
It seems that Hoyer might take a page from Tower’s book and try to fill one of the open spots on the cheap.
TBD

It's possible that they might look for the subs internally
Or maybe Jed has a few surprises left in store for us via trades a la the acquisition of Cameron Maybin.
Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...
There are some intriguing rule 5 options
Just did a bit of research using baseball reference and this list of rule 5 eligible players. Here are some of the interesting players.
Justin Sellers SS had a line of 285/371/497 in 90 games at AAA this year.
Corey Wimberly 2B/SS/OF had a line of 284/373/354 with 56 SB’s in 135 games in AAA.
Josh Horton SS had a line of 286/353/364 and 41/50 BB:K ratio in 108 games at AA.
Matt Lawson 2B had a line of 293/372/439 in 118 games at AA.
Marquez Smith 3B/2B had a line of 314/384/574 in 91 games at AAA. He has defense at 3B, has played a total of 32 minor league games at 2B with decent results.
Josh Rodriguez SS/2B had a line of 297/378/484 mostly at AAA.
Brad Emaus 2B/3B had a line of 290/397/476 mostly at AAA.
Ryan Adams 2B had a line of 298/365/464 in 134 AA games this year.
Steve Clevenger C had a line of 317/367/461 at AA.
Matt Wallach C had a line of 264/330/444 between A/AA while throwing out 40% of base runners.
Sellers, Lawson, and Wallach look like +defenders based on stats, while Wimberly looks like a below average fielder. The rest have decent defensive stats.

Also
From what I’ve read Brad Emaus probably has the best chance of sticking on an active roster the whole year and being a productive big leaguer.
There are also a handful of interesting pitchers with high K/9 rates that could be helpful in a bullpen over a whole season, including Wynn Pelzer who we gave up for Tejada last year.

Rox fan here.....I'm wondering if there are some goings on in the Padres universe that some players aren't coming back
Torrealba, Tejada to the Giants, and Chris Young maybe to the Mets…..
Is it just a money thing?

Tejada was a money thing. Torrealba wanted years as did Garland.
"Well, it's just ineffable." "Oh, so I'm not 'F-able'?" "No, no, ineffable means it can't be explained." "So I'm stupid?"
I see...thanks!

40 mil doesn’t buy much. With Adrian and Heath gone soon, the budget will free up.
Has Norv been fired yet?
More reason to hate Uribe
It screws up the market. Now Jerry will want more than we probably will have for him. I mean, is this what Adrian wants to do? “Protect” the other players because they’re in it together and other things that should be replaced by “blah blah blah”. I only hope Jerry cares more about having what may turn out to be a solid spot here in SD than to gravitate towards the higher dollar figure and possibly just be a guy filling in when needed.

Makes no sense to me
Why we aren’t working harder to retain the services of guys like Garland (1 year deal for $5 mill) and Tejada (1 year deal for $6.5 mill). These are perfect contracts for small market teams like us and they both sign WITHIN the division! Now we are in danger of not resigning Hairston? I don’t see us being the team we were last year without him.
Not resigning Garland is the biggest headscratcher though. Do we really have that much pitching?
it doesn't make sense, except in a world of 30 - 40 mil payroll
which should be illegal, since they get 30 mil in revenue sharing
Has Norv been fired yet?
