I thought it might be a good idea to keep up with the offseason signings and such, especially with the minor leaguers since those transactions aren't the ones we hear about very often. (Long sentence much?)The Padres signed a few independent league pitchers a few weeks back. RHPs Erik Hamren, Rod Scurry, and Chris Rollins, as well as LHP Andrew Werner are now part of the Padres minor league family! Welcome boys!
Erik Hamren played for the Joliet Jackhammers in the Northern league this year, as well as the Kansas City T-Bones. He was selected by the cubs in 2008 in the 37th round. He pitched in the Arizona, Northwest (WOOO!), and Midwest Leagues while with the Cubs and had an overall record of 5-5 with an ERA of 5.79. He had an ERA of 2.39 this year between the two teams. He will be 24 at the start of next season.
Rod Scurry was drafted three times, once by the Mariners (2007, 31st round), and twice by the Rockies (2005, 39th round and 2008, 31st round). He spent two seasons in the Rockies organization, both with their single A Northwest League (again, WOOO!) team. This season he pitched for the Windy City Thunderbolts. Over the three seasons he's played professionally, he has a record of 5-3 and an ERA of 4.24. This season however he had an ERA of 7.50 and pitched 6 innings. He will be 25 at the start of next season. Also, his dad is that Rod Scurry.
Chris Rollins was drafted by the Cubs in 2005 (41st round). He pitched for the Evansville Otters this season. He struck out 36 over 28.1 innings, and had an ERA of 4.13. He will be 24 at the start of next season.
Andrew Werner played for the Evansville Otters this year. Over two seasons in the independent leagues, he's gone 14-7 with an ERA of 3.77. This season he pitched two complete games, including a shutout in which he struck out 12! He will be 24 at the start of next season.
