Padres GM Hoyer: Adrian Gonzalez to have shoulder surgery tomorrow

XX Sports Radio: Jed Hoyer Interview (MP3) with Darren Smith

  • Hoyer is having casual conversations with other GM's, researching players and putting together wish lists.  His focus is now on next year.
  • The Giants were the best team in the NL West the last two months of the season.  Once Tim Lincecum became dominant again they were a different team. Hoyer thinks the Phillies are the best team in baseball.  He doesn't think the Giants will win, but he thinks they can.
  • The Giants did a good job of blocking center fielders from the Padres.  Once Tony Gwynn Jr. went on the DL, the Giants were able to block Cody Ross. "They snaked us on that one and it's paid big dividends so far in the playoffs."
  • Hoyer thought that the Rays were the best team in the American League, so it was a surprise to see them lose.
  • Hoyer isn't allowed to guess what Cliff Lee might get in free agency.  Hoyer thought Schilling and Beckett were the best post season pitchers he'd seen until Cliff Lee.
  • Adrian Gonzalez is going to have right shoulder surgery tomorrow in New York to clean up his labrum. They want to make sure he's 100% by next Spring Training. They won't know how much damage has been done until he's had surgery. This injury was bothering Adrian since last April, but they never considered surgery during the season.

Star-divide

  • Hoyer was shocked to see how good Gonzalez was defensively at first base.  He is Keith Hernandez-esque.
  • Petco Park doesn't hurt Gonzalez as much as it does players like Chase Headley and Will Venable, because Gonzalez uses the whole field.
  • Venable doesn't use the whole field enough, but his base running and defense make him a well above average major league player.  Hoyer would like to have Venable start in right field and move Ryan Ludwick to left.
  • The Padres are in the market for a center fielder but that doesn't mean they will rule out Tony Gwynn Jr.
  • Hoyer will sit down with Adrian's agent in the next couple weeks about his contract.
  • Hoyer has until a few days after the World Series to make decisions on Jon Garland and Yorvit Torrealba.
  • [Boring 2004 Red Sox talk]
  • Bud Black and Jed Hoyer are going to the Chargers game this Sunday.  He will be wearing a pink Chargers jersey because he lost a bet with producer Marty Caswell. Hoyer wants the Chargers to win.

Heath Bell told me he roots for the Chargers too.

Also, I saw Bud Black at the SDSU homecoming football game at the Aztec Warrior walk. He was wearing his red and black attire.

    Damn waiver rules

Kind of ironic that being in first place actually hurt the Padres because they had last crack at players on the waiver wire. Who knew Cody Ross would be such a difference maker?

Also, raise your hand if you thought the Aztecs would have twice as many wins as the Chargers (and should have three times as many).

Hope Adrian can recover from the surgery and be himself by spring trainig.

I feel like this next season is the most important season we’ve had in the past decade, we have to build on our momentum.

    It is hilarious!

I mean, what’s going on down there in the, er, left hand area.

I was tweeting with SI.com's Will Carroll about the surgeon they chose

He was on Will Carroll’s list of Top 10 Super Surgeons. I was wondering why the two that he listed higher who practiced in California would be skipped over in favor of a New York doctor (David Altchek). He said that one doesn’t practice much anymore and the other is the Dodgers’ team doctor.

In other words, Adrian seems to be going to the best possible doctor to get this done (with the exception of possibly the famous James Andrews who did Drew Brees’ shoulder). He (Altchek) is, however, the Mets team doctor for whatever that’s worth.

Here’s a quote from Will Carroll’s article on Baseball Prospectus:

Altchek gets a lot of attention for being one of the top “second-opinion” doctors, often consulted by players that like Altchek’s ability to explain things on their terms. “He makes you feel like you get it before he moves on,” said one of his former patients

No, I don't think you're an idiot. Please don't go trying to prove me wrong about that.

    Alternatively

“After reaching it, Adrian begins to consider whether or not he can contract herpes from second base…”

    Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...
