MLB Network Top 50 prospects in baseball
Did anyone see this show? What a crock.
The Padres only had one prospect that the MLB Network thought was in the top 50 in all of baseball. Our representative? Jaff Decker and he came in at #50 so he just barely made their list. At least we beat 4 other teams that had zero members of the top 50 list.
Their list is here.
Not sure how much thought they put into this list since most of the local Padre experts (here and here for example) don't even have Decker as OUR top prospect. It seems like most of the guys drafted last year around Tate were on the list so what does that say about Tate? Both he and Castro are bigger prospects that Decker. Not to mention several other candidates.
Anyway, just venting because we got no love. Keith Law releases his organization prospect analysis tomorrow on ESPN. Maybe he will have "better news" for us Padre fans.

Prospect rankings mean absolutely nothing
Right now Decker is definitely a better prospect than Castro and I would say he is over Tate too since you know Tate hasn’t really even played in a game yet.
What’s not to like about Jaff?

Personally I think he'd be good trade-bait
He could be a stellar DH, and in return we could get a pretty decent (read: better be damn good) player that is more suited to Petco and the NL.
Its not like he is Pmac or anything
He’s very athletic for his body
He’s got big time power, and he has excellent plate discipline and won’t get fooled on pitches.
I’m only sad Sandy won’t be here to watch him grow :(

I wouldn't say they "mean absolutely nothing"
I agree they are overrated. They are mostly just fun to look at.

Keith Law Also has Decker as the Padres top prospect
Law has Decker as the #27 prospect in all of baseball.
Law has just one other Padre (Castro, #46) in his top 110 prospects.
Keith Law on Donavan Tate...
“I want to see him face pro pitching, with wood, and make contact. He had contact issues in high school. I would not have taken him at 3.”

Maybe he’s talking about contact lens issues?

I’m a fan of Donavan but basically every scouting report says he needs to work on his contact and refine his approach to the plate. Hopefully the Padres can work with him

Are strikeouts the issue maybe?
Although that would be a very high BABIP

I'm no scout
but from watching a few videos on youtube (lol) it looks like he is shortening his stride to catch up on pitches, but still has a very long swing which causes him to foul off a lot of pitches and never really make solid contact.

Keith Law, when asked about Darnell and Forsythe...
“Darnell mashed at a level for which he was too old and too experienced. All those 22-23-year-olds at Fort Wayne … just ignore their stats.”
You have to take everything Law says with a grain of salt
He’s one guy who is scouting every team’s minor league system as well as several college and high school programs. No one can truly make an accurate judgment on a player when you’re looking at that many teams. He cannot go out and see every team every year, it’s just impossible so he has to go off of stats alone. If you want true scouting report and player judgment you have to go to a site like madfriars where they assign 2 guys to cover one team’s minor league system and get to see their players several times each year.
Except madfriars is way too expensive
I’m not paying almost $100 a year for prospect coverage.

I'm pretty sure that's how Kevin and Sandy ran the scouting department.

So, why then does Law have the Padres ranked at #11 in his organizational rankings?
He seems to be down on a lot of our prospects and he only has 2 of them in his top 110 in all of baseball.
I think it has a lot to do with the depth at the lower levels
A lot of the players down there have incredibly high ceilings and he probably wants to see how their develop through the minors before putting them on his list
