This

sounds pretty good. Out of all FA starters out there Garland seemed like the most interesting option. I never imagined he would fit into our budget though…

dont mind adding to the competition

i wouldnt fell comfortable just yet putting LeBlanc into the 5 hole. I wonder sometimes if he’s related to Geer. I do like Stauffer and his ability to compete. Gallagher, Poreda & Ramos are total question marks and I didnt really expect them to get the ball. Let the best man win!!!

ITS A YOUTH MOVEMENT

Unless of course Hoyer likes the player, then it doesn’t matter whether or not they fit with anything we do

So we got a big fat injured guy to play PH or maybe LF (yeah right)
Now we get an old pitcher who brings ‘veteran leadership’ (CY or Correira anyone?) and can ‘eat innings’ (though there’s nothing about whether he does anything GOOD in those innings).

So yeah instead of finding out what we have in players like Stauffer or LeBlanc or even Ramos, we get an old pitcher to take up innings while he gets rocked.

BRILLIANT (fail)

by TheAxManCometh on Jan 26, 2010 3:07 PM PST reply actions

I am annoyed

I like the youth movement and I like all the moves minus stairs and this. It’s a contradiction to their plan of action and doesn’t fit what is being done especially stairs.
We’d need to find out which of Leblanc and preda and stauffer can play

Stairs

who cares about that deal. it is nothing.
if he comes to spring training and can’t play it cost us nothing.

I kind of agree with you about Garland.

Though it could be the team doesn’t think any of those guys are ready or dependable. Plus if Garland performs well you can trade him in July for a prospect or two and then play the young guys anyway.

Cheap, durable starters are very valuable.

You don’t just throw 2-3 rookies to the wolves and count on them for 400 IP. Remember the Yankees starting Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes a couple years ago?

In the National League and in PETCO

he could be about a 3 WAR player. If they signed him for $10m or less, it’s a pretty good deal.

has to be

under 10 million. my guess is no more than $6

he and Correa will be good trade bait if we are out of it too

by schwing and a miss on Jan 26, 2010 3:18 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly

If Correa can hold it togeather for another half season then the Padres can move him at the deadline and get a mid level prospect, or if CY can stay healthy and pitch well the first half of the year there may be an oportunity to move him as well. Adding Garland gives the Padres a ton of flexability this year.

Great, great move.

He’s not going to “block” any of our young pitchers. They’ll still get their chances.

by theodore donald kerabatsos on Jan 26, 2010 4:04 PM PST reply actions

Of course he blocks them

Only way Stauffer etc gets up there is if one of the five main ones get injured. Preventing others from getting the chance to be in the majors is called blocking.

Unless you seriously believe one of the five won’t make it out of ST as a starter, and if you believe that I have a bridge to sell you

by TheAxManCometh on Jan 26, 2010 4:11 PM PST up reply actions

Oh yeah you're right...

I forgot that CY, Correia, Latos, Garland and Richard are all good for 33 starts and none of them will miss any starts due to injury or under-performance.

We should probably go ahead and trade all those pitching prospects now.

Here's a dumb idea

Let’s ask a guy who threw only 73 innings last year to be our 5th starter all season. Here’s a dumber one: Ask the guy who threw 46.1.

ehh.....

Not excited about this. Adding a pitcher with a WHIP of ~1.39… Luckily we will have a strong outfield… so maybe this could be reduced, but still…
He does not strike me as a huge improvement over any of the young pitchers that we would want to test and see if they can establish themselves.

Although, this could be a brilliant move if we are going to a weird 6 man rotation where Chris Young ONLY pitches at home, ever.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?playerId=6073&type=pitching3&three=1
Don’t know if ppl are aware of Young’s incredible home/away splits, but they are getting really ridiculous (beyond simple random fluctuations)—check each of the past three years.

Honestly, he should only pitch at home… And in the playoffs, EVERY attempt should be made to have him pitch at home, even if that means “disrupting” the normal pecking order.

Garland has been a decent pitcher.

Career FIP of 4.72, projected to be around 4.50 this year. PETCO should help that. If he gives 2.5-3 WAR, it’s a great deal.

Agreed about CY, not about Garland. Any time you can add a pitcher who has a no-hitter and a 20-win season to his name, for fairly cheap too, you have to call that a good move.

Relatively new to the NL

and pitched well in LA. Jon should have an above average season
in the big parks of the NL west. He won’t get blown out in early innings,
which is the problem we had last year – which wore out the bullpen.

We now have a pretty good pitching staff.

They don't like it

because it’s not “sexy” and maybe unnecessary, but we got him at a good price. Those of us looking at the other options (realistically) know we can get some usage out of him.

The only thing we should take from this is:

We got him at a good price. I don’t read FanGraphs for their plotted charts on the sex appeal of the trades the Padres make, we have jbox and Dex for that.

Stick With the Kids?

It’s true one potential #5 (Stauffer) pitched only 73 innings – in the majors. He also pitched 42 in triple-A for a total of 115 innings. Not bad after missing the previous year recovering from shoulder reconstruction surgery.

That guy with only 46.1 innings – in the majors (LeBlanc)? He pitched 121 innings in triple-A, for a total of 167 innings, second to Correia among ML and triple-A pitchers. In his last 7 starts, he went 6,6,7,6,5,5 and 7 innings, and went 3-0, the team went 5-2 and he had a 2.57 ERA. I’d like to have seen if he could keep that up.
