Here’s a good question for fans: would you take one world championship every decade if it meant punting eight of the other nine years? If your answer is no, then the Cardinals are your choice for the most efficient team. They spent almost $300 million more than the Marlins and were in a race every year but one. St. Louis achieved virtually as much as the Red Sox but did so spending $325 million less.

I wanna be in the race all the time

But damn, if a WS championship was a guaranteed thing, I don’t think I wanna know how far I’d go to get it.

Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? ◔ヮ◔

Same here

Just for the 1st one though. After that i would rather be in the race consistently, even if it meant to no WS.

It never will be

For anyone. So don’t worry about it.

I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

i want to be in the race every year.

the post season has quite a bit of luck involved, with the short series, the days off, the weather, the bugs .. anything can happen. If you are in the race every year, you’ll fetch a ring or two.

Atlanta had that amazing run in the 90’s, and only won one ring, and some people look down on that. I don’t get it. Every year for what, 14 seasons, they had exciting baseball for 7 or 8 months? I personally can’t think of anything better as a sports fan.

I agree with that.

"I'm a Padre at heart. Always gonna root for the Padres. Twenty-five years [with this organization], how can't you? Next year I'm gonna be rooting like a son-of-a-gun for these guys and for Blackie ... I'm gonna be rooting for the next general manager here, rooting for the city, the fans, everybody. I think a lot of San Diego." -Kevin Towers

I have never liked these

cost per win tables.
A team with a roster full of players making the MLB minimum will still win 50 games.
That makes them the most efficient by this standard.

Teams with large payrolls pay a premium to move from a 80 win team to a 90+ win team.

which is why

the author of the post tried to improve that process by giving increased weight to post season success (playoff/championship/WS appearances & victories). Still not scientific, but hard to argue that florida has traditionally been more successful than you might think looking only at their payroll.

by pjbno4 on Jan 21, 2010 6:28 AM PST up reply actions

Sure

Florida has certainly been more successful (efficient) than the Padres, Royals, and Pirates

by strummer on Jan 21, 2010 7:31 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly

Thats why they alluded to the fact that if you weight post season success’ heavier, the Cardinals are the most efficient team. Which I cannot argue with.
