for Jermaine Dye.

That guy's dumb

Dye’s a free agent, we don’t have to trade anyone.

We want to trade Bell and Kouz, there’s a difference.

Yeah, actually I take back my snarky comment.

One of those guys is probably getting traded regardless of who we’re trying to acquire in FA. It’s dumb to try to link the two transactions.

That man has old facts.

We’re also done purging payroll. It’s time to ratchet it back up a little. Well, it’s time to fill some holes, and you have to spend money to do that, right, gentlemen?

Right!

Yeah I think Dye could be had without getting rid of anybody. Although we should know for sure here pretty soon since the Arbitration players should be getting their salaries figured out here soon. February 1st is the hearings and hopefully we don’t have to go there for any of our players.

Although

I wouldn’t be upset if we got rid of Kouz.

Not exactly

In order to put dye someplace in the outfield we need to get rid of kouz to move headley out of left field. Otherwise we have headley-venable-dye. And that’s not good

Dye probably won't play the field

He’ll be the bat off the bench that Cliff Floyd was supposed to be.

That doesn't make sense

Assuming we move kouz and headley goes to third then unless you want dye to backup blanks-Gwynn-venable. And dye can only really backup lf – kinda like Oscar Salazar. But if it’s dye-venable-blanks you get good power fom the corners and a rapidly emerging all around player in the middle. You give up some on defense but increase power exponentially

by TheAxManCometh on Jan 13, 2010 1:20 PM PST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

No, you don't make sense

Jermaine Dye has played 9.1 innings of infield in his entire career. He can’t “only really backup If”

9.0 at 1B
0.1 at SS

You wouldn’t start Dye over any of the young guys in the OF.

Well that's why it doesn't make sense, then.

either way, Dye is seen as a poor defender in either field.

dumb dumb dumb

To get rid of anybody for Dye. They sure can loose lots of games with dye if they want to. If the FO does this, it says we have bad management in charge.

Don't think of it like we're getting rid of somebody to acquire Dye...

It’s more like, for example, we trade Kouz for a prospect or two who may be able to help us in the future. Because of the trade, we now have a little more payroll flexibility and can pursue a free agent that we might not have been otherwise able to afford — like Jermaine Dye.

Adding Dye wouldn't be bad

as long as he came relatively cheaply. At the very least he’d be the DH during interleague and could take place in some kind of outfield rotation. The potential though for having the occasional OF lineup of headley/blanks, venable, dye is not terribly attractive defensively though. A kouz deal makes sense, not as much for the payroll space, but just to get headley out of the OF.

I’m sure Xavier Nady is more expensive, but at least you’d have more confidence in him in the field.

I like Nady as well

Why would we want to sign someone like Dye who is an absolute butcher with the glove?
