Hoyer says that the Padres are spending a lot of money that isn't reflected in the Major League Payroll
XX Sports Radio: Jed Hoyer Interview Part 2 (MP3)) with Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton
- Baseball has become a younger mans game. Speed and defense are valued more.
- Hoyer says we need to invest in the future here, build up scouting staff, hire a ton of new people, keep spending a lot of money in the draft. The Padres are spending a lot of money outside of the Major League Payroll.
- Luis Durango is a talented, exciting and fast player. He'll probably see some time in the big leagues this season, but start the season in Portland.
- Rocco Baldelli is not on Hoyer's radar. Baldelli needs days to DH and he's better suited for the AL.
- It takes a lot of discipline to not rush players through the farm system. Hoyer says one of the big mistakes he made was rushing Cla Meredith to the big leagues. They traded him to the Padres and it worked out poorly for Boston.
- Hoyer is hopeful Blanks can be a power hitter to protect Adrian Gonzalez. Another way to protect a hitter is to put runners on base in front of the hitter.
- Hoyer says patience is important during the off season. Players have unrealistic expectations early in the off season so it takes time for their price to come down.

It's weird to me
that a caller would call in and his biggest concern would be Luis Durango.

Are you talking about the first caller, "Sparky"?
That caller was weird.

Maybe they're excited by his speed
the idea of him and Cabrera running around the basepaths together could be pretty awesome

I am thinking
He is going to have to learn to hit the ball out of the infield, before there is much running around the bases.

That
and that’s your biggest concern, (caller)? A guy who will not crack this outfield out of Spring Training?
Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? ◔ヮ◔

I gotta imagine
if he could NOT hit the ball out of the infield then he wouldn’t be at AA or have been given a shot with the major league club
I am kinda interested if he could be a 2B BUT i imagine someone like Forsythe or Darnell will go there

lol no way he already plays there
theres no way he can handle it

Wait, what?
I’m confused. We’re talking about potential future 2B or backup 2B, right? Isn’t Sogard our AAA 2B coming into this season?

i was joking because
i believe he can be a pretty decent second baseman

with the bat yes
the glove still needs alot of work from all reports.
Darnell or Forsythe will prob be the future at 2B and unless Savior develops a bit more power one of them might get his futre spot at 3B.

Bummer about Baldelli
I guess its hard to question hoyer on him since he got to see him up close last year, but Baldelli sure seemed like he could be a good fit to me. Cheap Right handed CF, enough speed to play in petco. I’ve never heard the DH thing about him before.

He has Mitochondrial Myopathy
Which means it’s next to impossible for him to stay feeling good enough to field a lot, but he can swing a bat, so DH it is.

guess that explains it
I knew he had medical issues, but I heard about that a year or two ago I thought that maybe he had been able to get past them at this point.

unfortuanetly, for rocco, you dont "get past" mitochondrial myopathy
it’s chronic and fatal. the rays learned how to cope with it (keep him regularly inactive) – something the padres can’t afford.
mission accomplished.

It will be fun to look back in a few years
and see if Hoyer and the new Ownership are walking the walk or just talking a bunch of B.S.
Hey, I’m all for spending money outside of the payroll, gotta build an organization from the ground up. Can only “fix” bad draft picks to a certain extent but at some point we gotta start seeing results. Maybe 2 or 3 years down the road…

I would suggest that walking the walk means
drafting and signing the best available players. In 2009 they did just that. Weather or not those specific players produce, they did exactly what they said they would.
