Is Gwynn a full time outfielder?

I think Gwynn has played great for us since he came to San Diego from the Brewers. He's definitely become alot more then a legacy pick up for us and has contributed quite a bit, even if he has struggled for a while. But the more I ask, the more I don't get a clear answer if people think he could be a full time CF or RF for us. I think people are set with Venable (no doubt he's earned it) and I think people believe Blanks could play well in the outfield because he did for a short period. But the question remains; do you think Gwynn could or should play CF/RF full time for the Padres in 2010, and why?

I think personally he's shown he can cover ground well and has improved tracking the ball through the outfield. He's a decent hitter who could easily slide into that #2 spot (and would be ALOT better then Eck there) and provide us with two guys at the top who can run and get on base for our power guys.

Thoughts?

Should Gwynn play outfield (CF/RF) on a full time basis in 2010?

I say we can give him a shot

Give him next season to really see what we have in him. If this team is in contention, it will be surprising, but most likely we’ll have another year of auditions next season. He’s shown a serpentine development path since we got him and I’m interested to see if he can sustain it.

I just don't see it.

He’ll be 27 in a few days, he’s been hanging around the major league level for four years now and he has struggled to produce good numbers. If he’s gonna be the everyday center fielder, he needs to concentrate on little things — bringing down his error total and improving his bunting — and start doing the big things — scoring runs and/or driving them in.

Venebla and Blanks, I think, have earned everyday status in the outfield, but that last spot … what’s gonna happen with it? If Kevin Towers cannot work out a trade for another outfielder, perhaps it won’t be such a bad thing going into spring training with at least five guys (Gwynn, Headley, Salazar, Durango, Macias and maybe even minor leaguers Mike Baxter and Chad Huffman) knowing that they are all fighting for the same job.

But I’ll be really pissed off if we get a repeat of the beginning of this year, when guys like Brian Giles and Kevin Kouzmanoff failed to produce for months but were kept in the lineup for reasons other than merit.

I don't know if any of our outfielders have earned a full time spot right now

I think they will all need to be rotated and by 1/2 way through next year we’ll have a good idea who are the best of the group.

That said, I think Tony has a better chance of being a 4th outfielder rather than a starter, but he could very well become a starter.

Next year will tell us.

How can anyone say yes?

He’s got very good range in CF, but that is it

His speed is good on defense...

but it doesn’t matter on the basepaths because he can’t steal bases for some reason.

10 for 16 with his speed is not good.

Not a chance in hell

Venable, Blanks and Headley will be the starters, or Venable Blanks and whoever KT signs with Headley moving to third. Gwynn will be a 4th OF that gets about 250 AB’s and plays twice a week, which is exactly what he should be

NO

He’d be a good 4th outfielder, but he’s not starting quality if we’re serious about making/winning in the playoffs.

OK, for those who vote no

Let me ask you a two part question

1) Would Venable be considered for the full time move to CF?
2) If not, or even if, who fills out the other starting outfield spot?

Let the current lineup ride

for the first part of next season. If Tony can get back to early season form and Blanks keeps hitting with power – trade Adrian for a gazillion players and put Blanks at first.
