We could be in the market for an outfielder. I'm not saying it's necessarily Milton. But our experience with him was rather a positive one. It wasn't really a negative one.

Love it

especially if we trade Adrian and one of Kouz/Headley like I expect us to this year.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Adrian go to the RedSox for SP and Kouz/Headley traded for a decent relief arm.

Hopefully we can flip Bell to a team with a decent catching prospect.

But yeah, I would gladly take Milty as long as the Cubs do most of the heavy lifting.

Also about this story

I enjoyed having Milton around in 2007, but bringing him back and expecting him to behave the whole time is not playing the averages. After all of his bad experiences in CLE, LA, TEX and CHI, I think that establishes a pretty good idea of his track record. With him, it’s not if, it’s when.

True

If we could work something out for something less than the entirety of a season, that’d be great.

Other than him

losing it when some announcers bagged on him, he did OK in Texas.

And I still maintain that Milty suffers from the same problem that most convicts do. Once you have that label, people go out of their way to reinforce it, regardless of your actions.

he tried to go up to the press box after some announcers criticized him on air

I’m sorry, but that’s not okay. It’s just not.

You’ll also notice I never said he had a problem in SD (assuming you don’t count the umpire blowout). But seriously, if you’re thinking, “Oh, he was okay in San Diego, and possibly Oakland. So he hasn’t had a problem absolutely everywhere he’s gone,” then fine, I’ll grant you that. Not everywhere he’s gone has led to a major problem. Congrats, I still don’t like his record. Does he need to f’ up everywhere to be a liability?

I didn't say that you said he was a problem in San Diego.

As for Texas, it depends on how you define “bad experience.” Yes, he shouldn’t have gone after the announcers. But if that’s all he did during a season in which he led the AL in OPS and got along well with his teammates and manager, then the overall “experience” was great.

He was pretty rad in '07

And I’d be OK with taking him back, as long as we don’t break the bank for him. The potential for his next outburst is too much of a risk.

Call me crazy but I think Milton's problems have been really exaggerated over the last few years.

Other than the announcer thing he was fine in Texas, and hit incredibly well to boot. In 2007 with us I don’t ever remember there being any really bad problems within the clubhouse with him. I just remember those quotes from Milton and Adrian after one game where it totally sounded like they were best buds or something. The thing with the umpire at the end of the season was mostly the umpire’s fault, and the very reserved Bobby Meachem agreed with that. His problems in Chicago have stemmed a lot from how the fans treat him.

The guy has a temper, we all know that. But I honestly think he’s not as bad as advertised, and if he can come back to ol’ relaxed San Diego I think he can be an effective player. Given the fact that his value is pretty low right now, I wouldn’t mind one bit seeing him back in a Padre uniform.

For Serious?

But our experience with him was rather a positive one. It wasn’t really a negative one.

I don’t know, I remember the way I felt after crazy Uncle Milton managed in the same game to take himself and Mike Cameron out for the remainder of a playoff chase. It was rather negative, to say the least. That’s some bad karma I don’t want floating around a young clubhouse.

He played very well as a Padre and I think it’s a bit of a stretch to suggest that those injuries reflected particularly negatively on him as a person.

BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD IDEA

He is a cancer. Why do you think he has a bad reputation? Because he is a bad guy. If you get shut down by one team, it may be a bad fit. But more than once and the problem is the player, not the team. PInella is a hard-nose manager, no BS. Black is more SoCal, laid back. WHat do you think he would do to the clubhouse of yourng impressionable players without a hard ass to keep him in check? Ruin it if you ask me. Stay young, cheap and energetic Padres. Stay away from Bradley. Look at it this way, If you dated a woman who always got into fights with her boyfriends, but didn’t get in a fight with you. You dumped her for someone else. She wants you back, after fighting with her last two boyfriends. Would you say “OK” or “nevermind, you aren’t worth the trouble.” Unless she is Marissa Miller you say no. Bradley is no Marissa Miller.

It's very problematic

He clearly fell off the cliff and though he hit well with us and Texas, his dramatic drop off and surly disposition does scream to be a problem, especially the latter since that’s been going on for too long.

I don’t know, I’d be fine with a Blanks-Gwynn-Venable outfield. I think these three could do something very special with alot of playing time.

But if we were to get bradley the ONLY way this would be worthwhile is if
1. Cubs pay 90-95% of his salary
2. Cubs get a minimal prospect in return or someone we just need to jettison from our system (Josh Geer?)

I certainly liked him in 2007.

Expectations are low if we get him on the cheap, nobody expects the Padres to be in in next year, so there’s not a lot of pressure either. I honestly think Bradley would be a great option as a spot starter, or a merely ‘good’ everyday player.

He’d also offer some veteran leadership. While it’s questionable if you want a hothead with his rap sheet to lead the kids in the clubhouse, he could bring a lot to the team. Hell, see if the Cubbies will take Giles for him.
