Padres beat the Diamondbacks 6-5 in the 10th!
I will fully admit that I had gotten a head start on a post talking about how we got swept by the Diamondbacks.
I will also fully admit that I have no idea who Luis Durango is, and yet, he came in and he contributed and now I am gay for him.
I also will admit that when Heath Bell was in during the 9th, I figured a guaranteed loss, and his mere presence is what prompted me to get a head start on posting the L post.
Adrian Gonzalez is awesome. Eric Byrnes thinks he has a future in Hollywood. Luis Durango, on the basis of his one steal, is like the fastest guy I've ever seen.

So they are without
Cesar Ramos, and Luis Durango tonight? How much does that hurt them?

Also from Ft Wayne Website
An interesting note, the game featured a atotal of six former Wizards (Chase Headley, Drew Macias, Durango, Nick Hundley, Will Venable and Ramos).

My bad
when reading “former wizards” I should have realized it was probably a lil while ago that they were in Ft Wayne.

Lameness
No TV today and it sounded like a hawt game. Durango does sound rugged and manly. Like maybe he hasn’t shaved in a few days and his Levis are all dirty from bringing in the cattle harvest.
Sounds like a good win, getting swept by dbags is never clever.

Noting the box score
Is there a pitcher we DID NOT USE?
Btw Durango has always had some great wheels. Could be a very good outfielder. Wouldn’t mind moving him to second though, that’d be fun with him and Cabrera (not even sure if that’s possible)

Great idea --
about the second base thing. Considering the way Towers likes to force players to change positions (recently Cabrera to short, Headly to left, Blanks to OF, etc.), and considering he’s been talking about acquiring a power bat for one of the outfield slots, 2B might be a nice place to tuck Durango. And he’ll have a great mentor, too. But perhaps David Eckstein won’t be so keen to teach him his position as he was teaching Cabrera to play shortstop.

What's the deal with Everth's fielding?
I know he makes a lot of nice plays but it seems like the errors are piling up. Two errors today and three a little ago. He’s got a nice glove but he has to cut back on the mistakes.

He's like 17 (hyperbole)
Not only is he considered a plus defender but some scouts see him as a future gold glover. He’s just gonna make a few mistakes while he’s here because he’s still learning.

It'd be ludricous to expect any more out of his kid
He’s got a nice arm, quicks, a good bat and a good attitude. Sure, he makes the errors of an A ball player. I can live with that. For now.

I see it as part of the great
learning experience of 2009. He’s being forced to learn a lot by trial by fire — a new position and how to hit major league pitching among them. Perhaps dealing with the weariness and body aches of playing every inning since June 19 is another lesson. And perhaps that explains his recent slump, his slight drop in stolen base success and all the recent errors.
Despite the errors, I was happy to see him break out of his slump last night. I had figured Bud Black was gonna have to sit him for a few games and let him catch his breath before he started hitting again.

Ecab...
has to wearing down a bit and thus more mental/physical errors…this is longer and with more pressure then he of course has ever dealt with.

Does the future spell small ball?
Since the move to Petco, the Pads have FINALLY gone away from the Nevin-Klesko dead pull hitters to guys like Khalil Greene with solid gap-to-gap power and finally have progressed to putting speed on the basepaths (Cabrera, Gwynn and even Blanks to a lesser extent) and reliable hitters (Eckstein is as good or better than Loretta was). Hopefully this becomes a trend.

Nevin, Klesko, Giles
Each of those guys had two or three really good seasons with the Padres, but once Petco opened, their days were numbered. Well, in Giles’ case, I wish his days were numbered (has anyone been able to market his skill to take a pitch more effectively than Brian Fucking Giles?). But the contracts they had hung around the organization like nooses. One of the really exciting things about Cabrera, Blanks and now, perhaps, Durango, is their youth. These guys aren’t going to become liabilities until the polar ice caps have long ago melted. And by then, Petco will be under water anyway.

As much as Giles sucked this year
he was a remarkably good player the rest of his time in San Diego. His power numbers dropped, but everything else was great. He was probably the second biggest offensive contributor on this team in 2008 behind Adrian. The problem was they gambled on that continuing, and it didn’t.

I can live with that comparison
but the notion that Blanks has any hint of speed made me giggle. But I do like the change in philosophy about base stealing as of late.
