Towers said he was told that Peavy decided he didn't want to go to play close to home (he's from Alabama). His original list of five teams that he would consider meant just that -- that he would consider them. Well, apparently he considered Atlanta and declined. But ultimately he accepted a team that was not on the list.

I said it way back then and I'm saying it now

This tells us two things.
First, KT got a lot of blame for torpedoing the talks with Atlanta, when it appears he did in fact have a deal in place and it was Peavy who shot it down.
Second, whoever made the decision to offer Peavy a NTC in the first place screwed up even bigger than we had previously thought.
Greg Maddux for manager.

Peavy's no trade clause
Weakens over the next couple of years. I just don’t think they thought they would need to get out from under his contract this early. They definitely were looking to get out from under it eventually though.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
