Game Thread: 8/31 Pads vs. Nats
Washington Nationals at San Diego Padres, Aug 31, 2009 7:05 PM PDT
I just saw Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn all decked out in his SDSU gear. It's the first I've seen him since his stomach surgery. He's lost some serious weight. His belly has shrunk to half its former size. He looks great.
Go Padres!

by icaughthundleys#4 on Aug 31, 2009 7:20 PM PDT reply actions
Eck now has one less double (in fewer PA's) than the mighty Chase Headley
Headley’s total lack of power is beyond laughable. 24 doubles and 9 homeruns. No wonder the guy has only 47 rbi’s.
RBI is a meaningless stat.

learned this from Wonk yesterday
according to BP – as a corner OF- Headley is 9th on the 2nd worse offensive team in the NL as far as cashing in RBI opportunities
and rbi opportunities
where and when they come, and of what variety, are completely out of his control.

Uncommon Sportsman :: Absurdity in play
It is.
Say Adrian is on first. Kouz is up. He grounds into a double play, erasing himself and Adrian. Chase comes up and gets a double. If Kouz hadn’t hit into a double play, Adrian could (let’s assume Adrian can run for a sec) have scored and given Chase an RBI. Instead, he had the TEMERITY to hit the double with no one on, and therefore gets nothing.
Greg Maddux for manager.

I understand where you are coming from
but when you are virtually powerless with the stick does it not make sense that you will generate fewer runs ?
adding of course the fact that you can't really generate much offense
on the basepaths with your speed or stolen base capabilities. In addition, Headley’s OPS is abysmal so he is a virtual out machine w/little power
Chase's OPS is a whopping 10 points higher than Kouzmanoff.
Kouz also excels at getting other people out in addition to himself, seeing as he’s grounded into more double plays than anyone else in the National League.
Headley is also three years younger than Kouz and in is his first full year starting.
Greg Maddux for manager.

Greg Maddux for manager.
by Zach (maestro876) on Aug 31, 2009 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions
yes..
kind of proves your point about the dangers of over emphasizing rbi’s.
I am judging Headley somewhat on a hunch as it is a bit early to write him off. Another intangible that may not mean much (but could) I don’t like how Headley has not improved defensively one whit in LF, I think it could say something about his ability to adapt or could even reflect his work ethic. Look at how much better the much younger Blanks adapted to the OF, look at someone like Blanks body language or even Venable’s compared to the deer in the headlights look that we get from Headley….
just one observation
Kouz can’t control if there are runners on base so it kinda works the same as the RBI’s
Kouz > The Savior....yeah, I said it.

True.
So why don’t we forget the GiDPs for Kouz and the RBIs for Chase?
Greg Maddux for manager.
by Zach (maestro876) on Aug 31, 2009 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions
yes... that's why it's not as valuable a stat as slugging or OPS.
But you said it’s meaningless, which it clearly is not. If it was completely meaningless, then it wouldn’t be unusual for terrible players to rack up huge RBI numbers while great players do not. We know that’s not the case.

Gwynn pulling another right side ground ball again
anyone know where batted ball charts may lie in cyberspace. I swear TGJ pulls nearly everything. Especially balls that he hits on the ground. Gwynn’s BA & OBP falling by the minute.
he needs to stop trying to pull the ball.
his average was great when he felt comfortable slapping the ball to the opposite field.

In PETCO only
his hits are pretty well spread out around the field.
His groundouts are largely on the right side.
His flyouts are mostly to the center and left side.

by Zach (maestro876) on Aug 31, 2009 8:26 PM PDT up reply actions
I only used PETCO
because it’s the easiest way to get a big sample. There’s no way to aggregate all the other parks he’s played at on mlb.com. You’d have to look at each one individually. I just went with PETCO because it offered the largest sample size.

I obvious have picked on him a lot lately but how many times on the ball Salazar went to the wall on will Headley stop 15 feet from the wall looking for a carom

Uncommon Sportsman :: Absurdity in play
He had a hot start in AAA in '08
and the Padres couldn’t hit (imagine that), so the media started asking Towers when they’d call up Headley. After much clamoring, Towers declared that Chase wasn’t going to be a Savior, hence the irony. It’s pretty much exactly like breakfast town. It is because it’s not.
