Game Thread: 8/18, Padres vs. Cubbies

Chicago Cubs at San Diego Padres, Aug 18, 2009 7:05 PM PDT

I wonder what kind of goals the Padres set for themselves when they are 20+ games out of contention.  If I were the manager I'd set goals for every series and if they weren't met there would be severe consequences.  I'm talking about brutal, unspeakable things like everything ranging from insults and humiliation to pink bellies.

As manager I'd also set my sights on catching and passing the D-Backs.  Getting out of last place should be doable and I'd consider the season an absolute failure if the Padres aren't able to achieve that goal.  This team needs a focus and those despicable snakes should be our target.

If I know anything about Bud Black (I don't), I'd imagine his goals right now are making sure nobody gets injured and that the coaching staff gets to take a good look at the young talent.  Booooring!

He should be hyping up this D-Back seek and destroy mission right now to the players.  Give them a taste of a make believe pennant race.

If the Padres win today and the Dodgers lose, we could be 19.5 out by tomorrow.

Go Padres!

He was promoted too soon.

He was just starting to get his stuff back in AA, when they thrust him forward into AAA where he got killed, and now they’ve moved him even higher where he is also getting killed.

No surprise. He probably should have finished in AA and started next year in AAA.

for the record

I “quit” because I didn’t like being spoken to as if I was a kid, and didn’t think that being a “moderator” granted those rights.

I’ve been back for quite some time, but now, I’m just busy with recently moving cross country.

For those who may not have noticed me quitting, that’s fine… don’t really care, but I do believe my legacy will continue. If I remember correctly (and I will recant if proven wrong), I intro’d TWSS.

In My Honest Opinion

It’s the members that make GLB what it is, not the moderators.

If it wasn’t for Drama, WG, TTG, Tec, Ax, JustDave, Maestro, and countless others, this blog wouldn’t be as interesting as it is.

There have been many that have come and gone, with varying levels of interesting opinions and views, but it is what it is…. a blog that is only as good as its members and contributors.

So, while I respect that you guys created (and maintain) the blog, when it comes down to it, playing God when it’s not 100% necessary is detrimental to this blog’s success. If you want to ban people for trolling or coming on here just to “stir things up” (ala DBackSkins, or whatever his name was), then I’m all for it.

I just feel as if you may have forgotten what this is all about….. an online community of Padres fans who “watch” games together, root for their team, give each other some $hit, and generally enjoy the overall experience.

Without the members, GLB doesn’t exist.

BUT, it’s grown to what it is as a shared product of what you guys AND the members have done.

I agree with you

and we appreciate all the support and contributions, but I was just saying that this blog was created to entertain ourselves and it would still exist in it’s simplest form without anybody else, just like it did at the beginning.

by jbox on Aug 18, 2009 8:34 PM PDT up reply actions

That's where we disagree

Have you ever been to another Padres open forum? Extremely annoying members. Moderators have to shape and enforce rules to keep things civil and on track

We had to do a lot of this early on that’s why things roll smoothly now. But when you and ‘tec would overtake threads insulting each other and it had nothing to do with the Padres we took action. You guys force our hand because you wouldn’t let it go.

by jbox on Aug 18, 2009 8:16 PM PDT up reply actions

You have to understand
If it wasn’t for Drama, WG, TTG, Tec, Ax, JustDave, Maestro, and countless others, this blog wouldn’t be as interesting as it is.

that it’s what they do that brought us here initially and keeps us here. We didn’t all just get off the bus straight from Good Membership Camp, and if we all thought something stunk, this wouldn’t exist. I mean, take from it what you will, get your kicks how you’d like, but a little more credit their way is deserving, perhaps.

But I have to have jpleeg2’s back on this. This blog is a fun place because of the community. There are tons of Padres blogs on the Internet right now. But they all lack the rest of you.

Thats where I disagree

I sought out other communities when I first started blogging about the Padres. The MEMBERS of GLB moderate themselves and keep from utter shenaigans breaking out. This is a place for people who are serious about the team, and you can easily be relegated to pariah status here by the members.

I give jbox and Dex credit for creating the blog. But I didn’t come here for their analysis and wit. I come here for what I get from my peers.

by Phantom on Aug 18, 2009 8:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I get it

I know you and jpleeg dig the community more than our posts, but if you were a one time blogger you should know that communities don’t just magically appear.

There are a lot of factors that go into making a moderately successful blog, we are fully aware that it’s not just us, we look at Uncommon Sportsman whenever we need to be reminded. It also reminds us that if you don’t post consistently and moderate effectively that communities don’t stick around for long.

by jbox on Aug 18, 2009 8:58 PM PDT up reply actions

To me, membership is a revolving door

If they didn’t cultivate the community, then there wouldn’t be a good one here. Members can’t police themselves because we can’t delete posts of other users, it would only take one bad apple to ruin the bunch, to borrow a stupid cliche. If someone came in to spam all the OTs and nobody could stop them, then nobody would show up anymore.

I disagree

People here are scathing and ingenious enough to make people suffer for stupidity. Hell, I’ve regretted lots of stupid shit that I’ve said in the past.

Let me put it this way. I’ve just been put in charge of managing one of mny company’s blogs. Our single biggest problem right now is that it lacks community. So even though we’re trying to set off into the brave new world of blogging, it doesn’t mean jack without a community. The best way for us to cultivate this comunity is through promotion and a mostly hands-off approach to the community aspects.

Put another way: Don’t you trust a blog more when you see posts from many poeple on it? Don’t you feel like you’re being exposed to a greater breadth of knowledge and perspective?

by Phantom on Aug 18, 2009 9:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Wrong in the case of Gaslamp Ball
The best way for us to cultivate this comunity is through promotion and a mostly hands-off approach to the community aspects.

"you must know much more about baseball and the Padres than most people on this blog"

by jpleeg2 on Aug 18, 2009 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Quite the opposite

Ingenious and scathing mean nothing to someone who’s just trolling. You regretted because you care, but imagine if someone just didn’t.

A community has to snowball, and promotion isn’t going to do anything if nobody likes your product. If someone shows up and doesn’t like you on first impression, forget it. You’re getting paid to do this, so I don’t want to tell you how to do it, but you have to have valuable content for a community to even begin to take root, and users will want to see your hands on when there’s trouble.

I don’t like to read comments on most sites, at least not for any insight. I think YouTube comments were the worst thing ever invented. If someone has insight, they can start a blog. I never look to comments of anything for greater breadth of knowledge on anything. Perspective? Maybe. But knowledge? Rarely, if ever. If someone does happen to add something, a good moderator makes note of it and brings it to readership attention.

To each his own then I guess

I think that strong content can draw initial interst, but it’s the community that builds loyal readership.

Literally the biggest problem with my company’s blog right now is that noone knows it exists. Those that do know have yet to comment.

I’m not at all suggesting that content or moderation is unimportant. But I am saying that blog loyalty is cultivated by an informed, engaging community. As I’ve said, I don’t come here for anything jbox or dex put out. I’m here for you guys.

Cant we all just agree

I know I am new to this site, but both sides are right, and both sides are wrong. You have to have some moderation, which helps the blog run smoothly. I also think that you should be able to voice your opinions in a appropriate matter. I have no idea what caused all of this, but take the tissues out, and wipe your eyes, kiss and make up, and everyone can be happy again.

by SDfaninAZ on Aug 18, 2009 9:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think anyone

has hurt feelings. I really actually find this an important, interesting discussion in terms of the role of media and blogs in this world.

I think people are uneasy to admit that the inmates can reun the assylum. We all know examples where this has failed (UT and Padres boards, can youhear me?). Of course, UT has implemented moderation and that place is still a steaming pile of shit.

What makes a successful blog, in my opinion, is a place where members can freely and intelligently commune with one another. Look at a place like Daily Kos (which served as the model for all of the SB Nation blogs). It first became popular because it offered an interesting, unique voice that wasn’t available anywhere else. But it’s maintained and grown its staus as a result of the robust community participation. Hell, the readers have kept Markos honest more than one time. And I think when the community can reasonably criticize the moderators, a blog has fully matured and become a successful entity.

no feelings here

just speaking my mind. And, I think this was a long overdue discussion. While the creators “are” this blog, by its truest definitiion, the members make this blog what it is.

I love coming here

I know I dont post very often, but I love reading how all of you guys banter back and forth. I come here to listen to that, but I also agree that sometimes a moderater is needed so that things dont get out of control. Again I have no idea what the argument is about, but both sides have good points.

That's not what makes a successful blog

that’s what a successful blog is. Making that end result takes a lot of thankless work, starting with excellent content that prompts community interaction. My model is joystiq.com, and I’m really just echoing what their editor-in-chief says about it.

Again

Not discounting the initial work. I was just reiterating that I could seriously give acrap about what jobx or Dex writer or thing. That’s not why I’m here and I would bet a lof people feel the same way.

It’s obvious that wihtout a physical construct for us to communicate, we wouldn’t be able to talk tto another. But just because someone has such a construct where people communicate doesn’t mean that the content or work of the moderators made it so.

I’d like to riterate that I’m thankful this blog exists. But I think it still thrives because of the community, not the moderators.

by Phantom on Aug 18, 2009 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions

But they make this construct safe for us

Their judgement has made this an attractive construct. Content was the initial hook, but they keep it alive by weeding out the bad so we never have to see it. If anything, their lack of attractive content (baseball-related, anyway) is exactly what makes smartasses like this community feel at home.

During the 9th…. saw Savior’s game tying double and Blanks’ walkoff shot with Matty V in the studio watching along.

Since they were using Channel 4’s feed, I wonder if Matty was thinking the same thing when Neely was pretty much quiet and Mud just yelled “GET!!”

I gotta believe that Matty V was thinking “SAAAANTA MARIAAAAA!!! PADRES WIN!!!!!!”, or my favorite “YOU’VE GOTTA BE SHAVIN ME!!”

I love the last replay

You clearly see Venable giving Blanks the “no slide” sign and Blanks goes down anyway for a quick lie down.

so i'm in my garage following the game online...

I see that Blanks hits an in-the-park hr, followed by a bunch of comments on here like “THAT WAS THE GREATEST THING MY EYES HAVE EVER SEEN

So I run upstairs and ask my girlfriend to flip the game on real quick hoping to catch a replay. To which she replies, “I’ll put it on picture-in-picture.” After about 2 minutes of her trying to figure out PIP and while flipping through basically every station we have EXCEPT channel 4, I gave up and went back to the basement.

Here comes the Heat...

“The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.”
