Dear Mr. Garfinkel...
I know you're not the only person in the Padre front office that frequents the GLB...but you're the highest ranking member with a "verified" account, so I'm addressing this to you in hopes that you'll pass it around.
I would just simply like to say Thank You. Thank you to you, Mr. Moorad, Grady Fuson, Bill Gayton, KT and everyone else in the organization that made the 2009 Padres draft one we as fans can be proud of. After the nightmares of Padres past when it comes to the draft, you have to understand why there was such skepticism on the day of the draft when names like Donavan Tate and Everett Williams were announced.
This draft was aggressive, professional and showed with actions, not just more talk, that this ownership group is committed to making this a competitive organization once again.
Of all the articles, commentaries and quotes that chronicle the disaster of the Matt Bush selection in 2004 the one that is permanently burned in my mind is one from a guy you're very familiar with - former D-Backs Director of Scouting Mike Rizzo. Rizzo told Jerry Crasnick this about the 2004 draft:
"The Padres can spin it any way they want to spin it," Rizzo says. "But if I have the first pick on the playground, I’m picking Stephen Drew over Matt Bush 100 out of 100 times. If I’m going to pick a guy to win the championship, I’ll pick Stephen Drew over Matt Bush and about 13 of the 14 guys that went before Stephen."
We don't want anymore spin around here. We want the best players available and we want them signed. You guys did three things yesterday that we hope we can count on seeing in future drafts:
1. You drafted on ability...not sign-ability.
2. You didn't shy away from drafting a Boras client.
3. You signed ALL of your Top 10 picks.
Hopefully over the next few years we can look back at this draft and say that it's the best one in Padre history. You guys did your part...now it's just up to the players.
Thanks, again.
Such a great picture! Go Friar!

Great post... agreed.
Bonus points for spelling Mr. Garfinkel’s last name right.

Yeah I'm surprised
at how often it is spelled wrong on here. EL not LE. Dex and Jbox most definitely know the proper way since they both have matching robes with the name Garfinkel monogrammed on it. It is rumored that there is a heart around the name but that is only speculation at this point.

Agreed
A great day.
Drafts can be crap shoots but the Front Office made the aggressive moves that give fans hope for the future. It is my hope that real Padre fans recognize the magnitude of these signings and get out to the park for the last month 1/2 to see the youth movement in action……and to get bobbleheads (or do we have to wait ’til next year?).

JAKE PEAVY!

He’s the one still signing the checks yeah?

Supposedly
They already had the money budgeted for this before Peavy was traded. Trading him just made the bonuses easier to swallow.

Fort Wayne is just an hour and a half up the road from me.
I can’t wait to see these new draftees play there.

I wonder if anyone bothered to look up the last time Alderson's regime took a Boras client in the first round.
Hint: it was last year

Yes. Dykstra is a Boras client.
Are you trying to say the Padres have had no problem drafting Boras clients in the past?
by Drama on Aug 28, 2009 8:54 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Before Alderson got here
yes they had problems drafting Boras clients.
by SDPads_1 on Aug 28, 2009 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Alderson...
Sandy was hired in April of 2005. He was CEO of the Padres for four drafts.
2005 – 0 Boras clients
2006 – 0 Boras clients
2007 – Took Boras client Wynn Pelzer in the ninth round
2008 – Took Boras client Allan Dykstra in the first round….23rd overall.
Let’s be honest here…we didn’t exactly start snapping up Boras clients when Sandy got here.
by Drama on Aug 28, 2009 7:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
So just because the player
is a Scott Boras client means he’s a great player in your eyes? Awesome. You’re going to have to give some details like…..
with the Padres turn to pick in the 3rd round they passed on this guy which all the scouts & experts said should have been their pick.
Not just give some random overall numbers. Boras has been an agent for players who have never made the show and flat out bombed too.
by SDPads_1 on Aug 28, 2009 8:34 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes. Every Boras client is GREAT.
That’s exactly what I said. Thank you for wrapping it up so succinctly for everyone.
by Drama on Aug 29, 2009 7:32 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well when you give stats
like flat numbers as to how many Boras clients were drafted then it makes it seem like you are under the impression that all Boras clients are amazing. Like I said do a little research as to what Boras clients were available when it was the Padres turn to pick in those drafts and show me if those players were supposed to be picked around that area in the draft…..THEN I will be dissapointed in the Padres “for passing on a Boras client”.
by SDPads_1 on Aug 29, 2009 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Do a little research?
Like when you dropped " Before Alderson got here yes they had problems drafting Boras clients." when they had only drafted two in four drafts? Was that research?
by Drama on Aug 29, 2009 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If the team drafted a Boras client in the first round last year, then where is the problem?
My Padres Blog
by Melvin Nieves on Aug 28, 2009 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I personally see
no problems in the past few years. Just some bad luck when it comes to injuries. Other people on here are very anti-Alderson though so you’d have to talk to them.
by SDPads_1 on Aug 28, 2009 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
One last thing...
Am I “anti-Alderson”? Yes. Sandy is an asshole and I’m thrilled he’s gone. But not once did I mention him in my original post. Even the example I made concerning Bush being picked over Drew was from a draft he had no part of.
You see no problems? We drafted Cesar Carrillo in the 2005 draft (under Sandy’s watch) and passed on Jacoby Ellsbury (a Boras client). I think that’s a pretty good example of picking a guy based on signability and not ability during the Alderson regime. Where the Padres the only team that was scared off by the potential price for Ellsbury? No. But we were one of them.
by Drama on Aug 28, 2009 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not convinced that Ellsbury was a better prospect than Carrillo at the time.
Polished college hitter with concerns about power vs polished college pitcher with concerns about workload. Not sure which one comes out ahead.

biaaatchhhhhhhh
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this blog is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on our souls.
by Sam (sdsuaztec4) on Aug 28, 2009 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
It's not about hindsight at all.
And it’s nothing against Cesar. If Ellsbury had been represented by someone else and not been seen as a guy that would be a tough to sign….would we have taken Cesar over Ellsbury?
That’s the point I tried to make in the original post with the quote from Rizzo. If everything is the same and we have Cesar and Ellsbury to pick from on the playground…do we take Cesar? I don’t know.
by Drama on Aug 29, 2009 7:36 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Quotes from Rizzo
regarding Matt Bush isn’t really going to prove any points.
by SDPads_1 on Aug 29, 2009 9:23 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The point was...
….draft like you do on a school yard…take the best player you can get your hands on. Seems like a pretty simple point.
by Drama on Aug 29, 2009 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Everyone
can draft players after the fact.
Also Ellsbury wasn’t a Boras client when he was drafted. He hired him in 2007.

I apologize...I was thinking of Craig Hansen.
Boston’s other first round pick in ’05. A Boras client that fell because of signability issues.
by Drama on Aug 29, 2009 7:40 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
There has been a MAJOR problem in the past with avoiding Boras clients.
From 2002-06 the Padres drafted no player whose adviser was agent Scott Boras, whose ability to extract dollars is renowned.
That’s FIVE straight drafts with not ONE Boras client. Zero.
